1. Seyha Yinh, , et. al. (2021), [1] aims to provide a comprehensive insight into the
strengthening of confining the composite to concrete RC beam and cylinder. Materials
used are natural sisal fibre reinforced polymer composites, epoxy resin and polyester
resin. Testing involved are tensile testing of FRP strips, Compression testing of
cylinders, 3-point loading of RC beam. Sisal FRPs are found to be significantly
effective to enhance the strength and ductility of confined concrete. The increase in
load carrying capacity and ductility is found increasing with sisal FRP thickness.
Natural sisal FRPs bonding to the tension face of both un-reinforced and reinforced
concrete beams were found to be effective to increase the ultimate load carrying
capacity of both types of beams. The gain in the ultimate flexural strength was more
significant in sisal FRP strengthened beams using epoxy resin. It can be concluded that
for strengthening purposes, the epoxy resin is found most effective for sisal FRPs
compared with polyester resin due to better mechanical properties. The proposed
anchoring system is found to be effective to prevent the delamination of FRPs from
concrete surface to restore the ductility of sisal FRP strengthened RC beams.
2. Akhila Padanattil, , et. al. (2018), [2] provides an insight into the strengthening of
confining the composite to concrete plain cylinder. Compression test was done for the
concrete cylinders. The load-bearing capability of the structure in the axial direction
could be significantly enhanced as observed from the compression test results. On
increasing the number of layers, the axial load carrying capacity also increased. On
confinement with three-layer sisal FRP, the axial load-carrying capacity increased by
38% and fracture energy improved 28.3 times that of the unconfined specimen. For
predicting the peak strength of sisal FRP-confined concrete an equation was developed.
The results from the proposed model were found to be in agreement with the
experimental results. The samples that were exposed to temperature cycling during the
environment durability test exhibited improvement in strength. By suitable pre-
treatment methods for sisal FRP, the resistance to alkaline environment can be
improved so that the problem of serviceability can be overcome. Hence, natural fiber
like sisal has great potential in strengthening of concrete structures, thus helping in
sustainable development.
3. Theodoros C. Rousakis, , et. al. (2018), [3] provides a study of strengthening columns
which are wrapped with externally bonded GFRP sheets and then with non-bonded
basalt fiber ropes in a hybrid scheme. Dynamic loading of cylinder specimens were
done. Explores the efficiency of the external transverse strengthening of deficient RC
columns of square section of low concrete strength and slender bars with composite
basalt fibre ropes (BSFR) under pseudo seismic, cyclic compressive load. Explored the
confining effects of Polypropylene (PPFR) and BSFR wrapping with and without
pretension. The analytical elaborations suggest that PPFR confinement of RC columns
reveals efficiency similar to the GFRP jacketing in terms of strength, while BSFR
confinement is inferior. Both PPFR and BSFR showed high stress redistribution
capacity and axial strain enhancement.
4. Nauman Wahab, et. al. (2019), [4] provides the strengthening of confining Jute &
polyester FRP with epoxy resin on concrete cylinder. Tensile testing of FRP flat coupon
& Compression testing of circular and square specimen were done. Experimental and
analytical results of circular and square concrete columns confined with jute – polyester
hybrid FRP composites. Hybrid jute polyester FRP composite showed a bi-linear stress
strain response, with an ascending shape. Effective in improving the compressive
strength and strain capacity of both circular & non-circular specimens. The increase in
strength and ultimate strain is directly dependent on the increasing number of FRP
layers. The stress strain response was dominated by large strain behavior of polyester
FRP. The inner FRP sheet ruptures after reaching the peak strength, the outer FRP sheet
provides enough resistance to lateral expansion of the concrete core. The increase in
fracture energy and ductility index varies with the number of FRP layers and concrete
strength. The hybrid confinement can be used to protect the spalling of the concrete
cover and prevention of moisture penetration.
5. Wit Derkowski, et. al. (2021), [5] provides the strengthening effect of prestensioned
composite laminate of GFRP, CFRP, BSRP applied on RC beams. The co-operation of
stiff and flexible adhesive layers in the strengthening of concrete structures using FRP
composite may eliminate the disadvantage of brittle and rapid failure of the concrete–
FRP composite joint. The study showed that the use of an FRP strip on a highly flexible
polymer may improve the safety of the structure.
