A world without passion and strong emotions.

Students present both sides of the topic objectively: 6 for and 6 against.

They must support them with examples and evidence from the book. (2 minutes
each of the members)

The group conducts a debate based on the ideas they have mentioned: the
audience can ask questions and give opinions on the arguments presented.

Introduction (Anqi):

Today, we will be discussing a world without emotions and passions. A world like that
could benefit us in some ways. However, cold-blooded individuals can cause problems in
that society. We will begin by discussing the advantages, and then the disadvantages.

ADVANTAGES:

Independence (Ying)

Independence is represented like everyone living alone, having their regular work, and
don't need anyone's help. In the book, people who live in the New World can be friends
with everyone. However, they can’t have deep feelings for just one person for a long time,
as a consequence, they can’t feel pressured and hurt from another. In the book, Lenina is
a kind example. When she was dating Henry for four months, her friend Fanny said it’s
wrong to have a long deep relationship with only one person. In addition, John, who came
from the old world, said with Lenina that in his place, two people who love each other will
get married and will live together forever. Lenina thought that was a horrible idea,
everyone belongs to everyone else, how can two people be together for a lifetime? These
examples can prove to us that in the New World, everyone is independent and non
specific.

Less impulsive behaviour (Anqi)

Having less impulsive behaviour is a significant advantage. Firstly, people tend to act
more rationally and calmly when they are not controlled by emotions or strong passions.
They can make decisions while considering all the consequences. The book Brave New
World provides several examples related to this topic. One of them can be the behaviour
of John, The Savage, in comparison to the people of normal society. When he saw his
mother dying, he began to cry, lose control and act impulsively, such as throwing away the
soma he thought was the cause of all the negative outcomes. In comparison to Bernard
Marx, although Henry and his friends were speaking badly of Lenina, he only insulted
them in his heart and did not immediately go for an argument. This comparison shows that
in that society, there were no arguments or fights that caused people to lose control and
act impulsively.

Efficiency (Letizia)

A world without passion and strong emotions can make people work more efficiently than
with emotions. Once they have no strong emotions, people will not be influenced by other
people and it will increase their productivity in their daily life and also save them a lot of
time. Efficiency in the brave new world makes the society successful, and since all the
people in the brave new world work efficiently and with the same attitude, it made the
society don’t have any conflict and everything was stable because of it. However, this
efficiency requires them to sacrifice their personality and freedom since they are all
identical and also they are prohibited having a long relationship with others to avoid
breaking the social stability that is established by the efficiency.

Love (Pincay)

Love is a feeling that it can manifest in different ways. Generally, it involves deep affection,
care, understanding, and emotional connection with another person. It can exist in
different relationships, such as family, romantic or friendly. Although in the book, love is a
feeling that is not allowed. Therefore, when they feel strong things they should take soma.
An example would be when Henry tells Bernard that he should have relations with Lenina,
but Bernad is upset with this because he is in love with her. Another example in the book
is when Bernard prefers to walk with Lenina in a park. However, Lenina doesn't
understand the idea of an intellectual conversation. This means that Bernard is in love
with her because these are things that a person would do when you like a person.

A world without jealousy ( Alexandra )

In the brave new world it was normal for women and men to have many sexual partners
during their lives and break relationships with them freely because everyone belonged to
everyone. There was no concept of jealousy or possession of the other, and both the man
and the woman could openly demonstrate their desire to be with a person unlike in the old
world in which no one was supposed to be with more than one person and if you had
more than one partner, people thought you're very bad." That's why once a lot of women
came and attacked Linda because she had been with their men. Jealousy is defined as a
response to a rupture of the emotional balance that arises when a person perceives the
threat or feels the possibility of loss, towards something he considers his own. Therefore a
society without jealousy avoids the emotions it produces such as anxiety, anguish,
disturbing thoughts and avoids the lack of self-esteem and the toxicity produced by
excessive jealousy.

DISADVANTAGES:

Without maternal love (Ying)

When we were born, we grew up with our mother's love. Mother is the dearest person to
us in this world. However, that feature is not represented in the book. In the book, John,
who was born in the old world just like the world we live in, but his mother Linda, who is
from the new world, was injured in an accident and lived in the old world. Her knowledge
was kept the same as in the New World, she didn’t love her son that much and didn’t even
want to be a mother, because motherhood is a shameful identity in that world. When John
came to the New World, she didn’t think that he would not adapt to the new environment,
but Linda immediately ate Soma. Before Linda died, the name she had called was not
John’s name, it was another man’s name. That made John very upset, his mother didn’t
even think about him before she died.

Lack of empathy (Anqi)

The unemotional world has a downside: a lack of empathy. Despite having normal
relationships with those around them, they did not have parents to teach them how to love
or show compassion towards others. As a result, they appear cold-blooded without
empathy. We can prove this point with an example from the book. When John's mother,
Linda, saw Thomas, the man she used to be with, she immediately went to him and
hugged him. However, everyone laughed at her because she was overweight and had
yellow teeth. They could not understand her decision of having a son because they saw it
as a primitive action. In addition, they could not empathise with what she had been
through. Perhaps this world was too cold and unemotional, making it difficult for people to
connect with each other and the world?

Weakened relationships (Letizia)

In the book, relationships are represented all the time. People in the new world don't have
many deep relationships with other people because they follow the rule of the society of:
everyone belongs to everyone else. The new society doesn’t agree people have a long
relationship that lasts more than three months due to the rule. They don't have a romantic
relationship, they only have a short time lover. The people of the new world also don’t
have parents and they will never be parents since they consider that only animals will
have babies, so due to it, they can’t feel a lot of things and also know other people's
emotions. This will make them lose faith, have poor communication and little intimacy and
Due to the weakened relationships and don't have passions and feelings, as a
consequence, it makes them seem like machines.

Frustration (Pincay)

Frustration is an emotion that arises when a person experiences obstacles or difficulties in

achieving their goals. It can generate feelings of disgust or disappointment.
An example of the book will be when Bernard is frustrated because he doesn't fully fit into
society due to his short stature and strange behaviour making him the subject of ridicule.

The structure of society ( Alexandra)

In Brave New World the society is divided into the High Level eggs known as alphas and
betas and the eggs of low level humans known as gammas deltas and the lowest level of
them known as epilsons.

The purpose of this division or conditioning was to make people like what they were and
what society made them do. The gammas, deltas and epsilons were raised making them
hate books so as not to develop their intelligence and nature because when they visited
the country they didn’t spend money on transport and didn’t contribute to the economy.
This caused society to be conditioned to love sports that needed complicated equipment
to contribute to the economy. This type of society makes the society conformist and don’t
let them dream or have the possibility of ascending in society unlike our society in which,
regardless of the economic level, people can ascend in society by training academically or
polishing their skills.
