1 (a) A certain radioactive substance decays to half its mass every 5


days. The mass of the radioactive substance is currently 144
grams.

What will be left of the mass of the radioactive substance after


25 days?

(b) The population of a city is currently 8,000. The population of the


city doubles every 6 years.

What will be the population of the city be 30 years from now?

(c) An overhead water tank leaks water from a puncture at the


bottom of the tank. The tank leaks 6 litres of water every 8
hours. The volume of water in the tank is currently 90 litres.

How many litres of water will be left in the tank 24 hours from
now?

shopping mall.

(b) Connor is collecting newspaper cut-outs of past world leaders


for his school project. He collected 35 cut-outs. His father gave
him 18 cut-outs, his sister gave him 8 cut-outs and his friend
Sonia gave him 26 cut-outs. He gave his friends Julie and Oliver
8 cut-outs and 14 cut-outs respectively. How many newspaper
cut-outs does Connor has left?

In this question, letters of the alphabet are assigned number values:

The product value of a word is created by multiplying the value of the letters.
For example: the product value of ‘KIN’ = 11 × 9 × 14 = 1,386
