ACADEMIC TEXT: LANGUAGE ANXIETY

One of the struggle that a lot of people is facing right now just like nervousness to speak a particular

language. It is a common emotional experience that many individuals face on a daily basis. Learning new

language can give people fear, nervousness and anxiety that make people uncomfortable to speak but how can

this anxiety affect the daily life of the people? What are the possible outcome having this kind of anxiety?

Language is very important to us because it is our way of communicating and makes everything

easy for us to understand as a human being though there are some people that can’t use a verbal language that’s

why there’s also a non-verbal which we use actions to communicate with people that have a disability. Studying

language might be perceived difficult for some students. With feelings of discomfort and insecurity, they find it

difficult to share their opinions and participate in class discussions. This students are afraid of making mistakes,

so they avoid doing or saying if they are not sure. Learners might feel frustrated. They might have problems

with their limited vocabularies and how to use them in context. Not being able to comprehend native speakers

or other peers with higher proficiencies might also cause confusion for foreign/second language learners. It’s

hard to say what you want to say especially if you can't communicate with others. That you feel that they are

saying something bad to you especially when you speak that makes us unable to express ourselves in front of

many people. Personal anxiety, social anxiety and belief about language learning can be the reason of language

anxiety. Personal anxiety means shyness, lack of confidence and low self-esteem, self-concept and

competiveness that make student or non-student fear to speak. Social anxiety is fear from being judge of other

people, being embarrassed so those people won’t even try.

Just because people are nervous, it does not mean they have poor performance. Even professionals such

as artists or experienced speakers may feel some sort of anxiety when they have to speak in public. Thus,

having a slight feeling of anxiety is normal as it is experienced by many of us. Students must focus on getting

their message across to the audience and not be afraid to make mistakes language anxiety is fear of speaking

specific language. That personal anxiety and social anxiety may cause the language anxiety. Every one may

experience language anxiety by being fear of embarrassment and lack of confidence.
