The Large Hadron Collider outside Geneva boosts protons to energies of 6.5 TeV (6,500 GeV) in five
stages (the numbers given in brackets represent the total kinetic energy of the protons at the end of
each stage).
The first and the last booster accelerators are: the Linac 2 (50 MeV), and the main ring (6,500 GeV),
respectively. Using
𝐾𝐾 + 𝑚𝑚𝑝𝑝 𝑐𝑐 2 = 𝛾𝛾 𝑚𝑚𝑝𝑝 𝑐𝑐 2 = total energy

where K is the kinetic energy of the proton, calculate the speed (β= v/c) as a fraction of the speed of
light c of the protons at the end of each stage? For a proton use mp c2 = 938 MeV.
