3. Product Description

3.1 General
Correvit S-Motion sensors use the proven Correvit tech-
nology for non-contact measurement of speed and slip
angle.

A new algorithm significantly reduces the signal noise.

This algorithm and the high measurement frequency of
500 Hz enable a minimal signal delay of 6 ms.
A built-in 5 Hz GPS receiver enables determination of
position data and time. The external magnetic antenna
allows flexible and quick mounting on the vehicle.
Integrated accelerometers enable the determination of
additional measurands like longitudinal and transverse
acceleration of the vehicle. Integrated angular rate
sensors enable measurement of the pitch and roll angle
as well as the rotation around the vertical axis of the
vehicle.
Moreover, further signals such as leveled acceleration
or curve radius are already calculated inside the sensor.
A conversion of speed to any point of the vehicle, e.g.
center of gravity or rear axis is possible.
The output of these additional signals provides the option
to perform a large number of measurands required for
driving dynamics standard tests. This simplifies the
instrumentation of the vehicle and minimizes application
errors.

Correvit S-Motion sensors produce unparalleled accuracy

on all standard testing surfaces, even under the most
challenging conditions. They feature high-quality optical
elements, the newest optoelectronical components and
state-of-the-art high-performance signal processing based
on DSP and FPGA‘s. Speed and distance information
is updated at 500 Hz to track every highly dynamic
maneuver.
The delivered KiCenter software allows easy
configuration. Programmable, standardized signal outputs
and interfaces provide direct connection to PC and
virtually all data acquisition systems, making all measured
values directly available.

Mount the stabilizing element on the magnetic plate

holder. Take the pre-assembled magnetic plate holder
and place it parallel to the vehicle body (e.g. on the rear
passenger door as shown above).
The magnetic plates will automatically adhere to the
(metal) vehicle door/body panel.
Measure the sensor mounting height to be sure that the
sensor is within the specified vertical operating range (see
section 4.1, Specifications). This distance is measured
from the bottom of the sensor body (i.e. the lower edge
of the mounting plate) to the road or track surface. If the
sensor is not within the operating range, loosen the black
levers at the magnetic holder and reposition the mounting
unit so that the height is correct.

To assure proper functioning of the suction holders, the

mounting area must be free of grease, oil, dust and other
contaminants. For this reason it is necessary to clean the
painted surface in the mounting area before attaching the
suction holders. Do not use cleaning products that leave
residue of any kind on the surface.

Always inspect the suction mounting unit before use.

Special attention should be paid to the condition of the
rubber suction pads, which must be absolutely intact.
Replace damaged pads immediately.

Remove the license plate and attach the license plate

mounting device.

Fig. 14: Installation with suction holder,

step 1

Remove the protection caps of the suction holder pads.

Fig. 15: Installation with suction holder,

step 2

Place the suction holder unit onto the hood. The preferred
mounting position is in the middle of the hood, but you
may also place it laterally shifted if the design of the hood
does not allow a position in the middle. You can mount
the suction holder device either horizontally or vertically.

Fig. 16: Installation with suction holder,

step 3

Page 22 CSMOTA_002-713e-08.16
Setup and Connection

When the suction holder unit is correctly positioned, press

the suction holders – one after the other – firmly against
the vehicle body to flatten the rubber pads against the
body surface. Then, push the two pumping pistons
repeatedly until the red warning ring is not visible any
more.

Fig. 17: Installation with suction holder,

step 4

The suction holder is ready for use when the red warning
ring is not visible anymore.

Fig. 18: Installation with suction holder,

step 5

CSMOTA_002-713e-08.16 Page 23
S-Motion, Non-contact Optical Sensors, Type CSMOTA...

Monitor the pumping pistons during use to be sure that

the suction pads adhere firmly!

If the red warning ring

becomes visible, the suction
pads will loosen. In this case
please interrupt use and
push the pistons until the red
ring is invisible again.

A completely visible red

warning ring means that
the vacuum is lost and the
suction pads do not adhere
any more. Interrupt use
immediately and remount
the suction holder unit.

It is strongly recommended to use a safety line to secure

the suction holder unit during the application.

Page 24 CSMOTA_002-713e-08.16

Tighten the locking lever of the stabilization element of

the suction holder unit.

Fig. 19: Installation with suction holder,

step 6

Take the extension with mounting plates and affix it to

the license plate mounting device as shown in Fig. 20.
Measure the sensor mounting height to be sure that the
sensor is within the specified vertical operating range (see
section 4.1); this distance is measured from the bottom of
the sensor body (= the bottom of the mounting plate) to
the road or track surface.

Fig. 20: Installation with suction holder,

step 7

Mount the upper mounting plate (mounting plate 1) of the

extension to the mounting plate of the suction holder unit.

6.3 Sensor Configuration

On the "Sensor Configuration" page you can set various
options for using the sensor.

Fig. 34: Screen view of the Sensor Configuration page

Calibration Setting
Displays the values that are calculated during calibration,
using the "Device Calibration" page. The values can also
be changed manually.
For distance calibration a light barrier is required.

Filter Settings

Filter activate
Activation of a moving average filter which affects all out-
put signals. The filter time results from the set number of
measurement values multiplied by the sensor measure-
ment cycle of 2 ms.
Example: 2 ms * 16 = 32 ms.
The higher the filter time, the more the signals are smoo-
thed and the higher the signal delay is.

Page 34 CSMOTA_002-713e-08.16
S-Motion Sensor Settings

Signal Delay
Displays the current signal delay consisting of the proces-
sor computing time and the delay caused by the filter.

Sensor Settings

Angle Deactivation
At very low velocities, the angle signal shows significant
fluctuations. This is caused by the limited velocity reso-
lution and the calculation formula "angle = arctan(VelY/
VelX)".
Therefore, the angle output is set to 0 below the determi-
ned velocity threshold.

Standstill Threshold Value

At standstill the sensor may wrongly detect vehicle vibra-
tions as movement and put out a velocity value. To avoid
this, a threshold of of 0.5 km/h is active in the default set-
ting of the sensor; below this all velocity values are set to
0.
If there are strong vibrations, it may be reasonable to
increase this threshold value.

Network Settings

DHCP
When using a LAN cable.
Default: Activated.

If the checkbox is activated, the IP and subnet mask will

be automatically assigned to the sensor when connected
to a DHCP server by LAN cable.

If the checkbox is not activated, the required settings may

be made manually. It is recommended to contact your
system administrator in this case.

6.4 Additional Configuration

Fig. 35: Screen view of the "Additional Configuration"

page

Calculation to POI
For calculating signals at a virtual measuring point (POI).
The calculation is applied to the following signals: Vel,
VelX, VelY, Angle, Dist, and Radius.
The correct distances between POI and sensor in the
vehicle y-axis (distance y) and x-axis (distance x) must be
entered in mm. The following formulas are applied for the
calculation:
VelXPOI = VelXSensor + AngleVelZ_body * dimension y
VelYPOI = VelYSensor – AngleVelZ_body * dimension x
The other signals are derived from VelX and VelY.

Due to the influence of AngleVelZ_body, a higher noise of

the calculated signals is to be expected.

Page 36 CSMOTA_002-713e-08.16
S-Motion Sensor Settings

Pitch and Roll Offset

Existing mounting offsets may be corrected with the help
of the offset values for pitch and roll.
When the "Adjust Offset" button is used, the current angle
values are set as the offset. Apply the "Save to Device"
function to accept the values.

Pitch and roll are measured relative to the horizon.

Therefore, the test vehicle should stand on a flat non-
inclined area.
Offset values only influence the pitch and roll signals.
Other signals are not corrected.

Stand Still Angular Velocities

The sensor detects standstill if the maximum amplitudes
of the angular velocities are within the specified span. At
standstill offsets are automatically adjusted.
Default value: ±3.0 °/s

6.5 Digital Output

On the "Digital Output" page you can configure the output
of the digital channels.

Fig. 36: Screen view of "Digital Output" page

Basic Settings

Digital channel 1 2 3 4
Signal Vel VelX VelY Angle
Resolution 340 P/m 340 P/m 100 Hz/km/h 100 Hz/°
Mid frequency --- --- 5 000 Hz 5 000 Hz

For digital channels 1 and 2, only the absolute value of

velocity Vel or VelX is displayed; the driving direction is
not considered.

For digital channels 3 and 4, a mid frequency is deter

mined to enable negative values for signals VelY and
Angle.
Example:
VelY, resolution 100 Hz/km/h, mid frequency 5 000 Hz
–5 km/h → 4 500 Hz
0 km/h → 5 000 Hz
5 km/h → 5 500 Hz

6.6 Analog Output

On the "Analog Outputs" page you can configure the
output of the analog channels. You can set the desired
resolution and offset.

Fig. 37: Screen view of the "Analog Output" page

Basic Settings
The following signals are permanently assigned to the
four channels: Vel, VelX, VelY, and Angle.

Signal Vel VelX VelY Angle
Resolution 40 mV/ 40 mV/ 100 mV/ 100 mV/°
km/h km/h km/h
Offset 0 mV 0 mV 0 mV 0 mV

The global output range for all channels is ±10 V. Using

the combo box, you may also select 0 ... 5 V, 0 ... 10 V,
and ±5 V as the global range.

Individiual Output Enable

If this function is activated, you may assign other
measurands to the channels. When "Global Output
Range" is not active, you may assign individual output
ranges to the single channels.

6.7 CAN Bus

On the "CAN Bus" page you can configure the CAN Bus
according to your requirements.

Fig. 38: Screen view of the "CAN Bus" page

Baud Rate
Rate of transmission of the CAN bus protocol. Must corre-
spond to the data acquistion system setting.

Data Format
Default: Intel
You can choose between Intel or Motorola data format.

Terminating Resistor
Default: activated
Generally, it must be activated when there is a direct con-
nection between sensor and data acquisition. The termi-
nating restistor only needs to be deactivated when the
sensor is connected between the data acquisition and an
additional sensor in the CAN bus.

CAN Sensor ID
If multiple S-Motion sensors are in use, they may be dif-
ferentiated by setting individual sensor IDs. This may be
needed, for example, to identify later which sensor was
used for a measurement.

Page 40 CSMOTA_002-713e-08.16
S-Motion Sensor Settings

Send Modes
ƒƒ Continuous Send Mode: Data is continuously sent with
the set interval time

The sensor always works internally with an interval time of

2 ms. If you increase the send interval, not every measu-
rement value will be output via the CAN bus. In this case,
we therefore recommend activating a filter with an appro-
priate average mean value time.

ƒƒ Trigger Frame Mode: A measurement data package is

only sent on "request" by the data acquisition, which
then sends a frame with the set address to the sensor.

CAN Frames Settings

It is possible to switch on or switch off single CAN frames.
Use the check box to activate or deactivate the particular
CAN frame. The included signals are stated following the
ID fields.

The basic setting just requires allocating an ID for the

first data frame. The following frames are numbered
automatically.

Individual CAN Addressing enable

If the check box is activated, an individual address for
each CAN frame may be allocated.

CAN frame "Status" has its own send interval which can
be entered in ms under "Send Interval Status".

If all CAN frames are activated and the send interval is

set to 2 ms, the CAN bus will be working at full capacity.
In this case, it is not recommended to connect further
sensors to this bus.

6.8 CAN DBC Settings

On this page you may determine signal name, unit, factor
and offset of the analog inputs and the digital input. These
settings will be considered when generating a CAN DB
file.
Additionally, it is possible to set the measurement mode of
the digital input.

6.9 Device Calibration

On this page, you may determine the calibration factor

and the angle offset (see page "Sensor Configuration").
In the "Calibration Settings" submenu you may make the
settings required for the calibration.
The "Online" tab shows the progress of the calibration.
The "Results" tab shows the results of a single calibration
drive.
The "Calibration Results" tab provides the overall result
and an option to store the values.

For distance calibration a light barrier is required.

6.9.1 Calibration Settings

Fig. 41: Screen view of the "Device

Calibration"/"Calibration Settings" page

Calibration Distance
We recommend using a straight and plain distance of at
least 200 m for performing a calibration.

Channels to Calibrate
You may choose whether you want to calibrate distance
or angle or both parameters simultaneously.

Page 44 CSMOTA_002-713e-08.16
S-Motion Sensor Settings

Distance
Here you can determine the calibration factor with which
maximum accuracy can be achieved on the specific
surface.
For distance calibration a light barrier is required which
must be connected to the "IN" connector. The calibra-
tion distance must be a measured distance; you need to
know its length accurately (up to only a few centimeters).
A reflector which serves to start and stop the calibration
drive must be installed at the beginning and the end of the
distance. During the calibration drive the vehicle speed
should be as constant as possible.

Angle
After the installation, the sensor will normally show a small
torsion towards the vehicle coordinate system. When the
calibration drive is performed, this angle offset is determi-
ned and saved in the calibration settings. The angle offset
also serves to correct the calculation of the longitudinal
and transverse speed. If only the channel "angle" is selec-
ted for calibration a light barrier is not required. In this
case, the measurement is started by clicking the "Start
Angle Calibration" button and automatically stopped when
the end of the defined calibration distance is reached. The
angle calibration should only be started when a constant
speed is gained. You cannot expect good results when
starting at standstill.
A light barrier is used as a trigger signal for the angle cali-
bration as well if both channels are activated.

Further Settings
Trigger pulses until stop
When the distance calibration is performed, the measu-
rement is always started with the first trigger pulse of
the light barrier. Normally, the second pulse will stop the
measurement. If there are additional reflectors between
start and stop position which generate a light barrier
signal, the number of trigger pulses until stop must be
increased correspondingly.

Number of Acquisitions
Number of repeats intended to be performed for determi-
nation of the calibration result. The result will be generated
from the average value of the individual measurements.
The measurement mode is started via the "Next" button
and passed on to the "Online" sub-page.
Via the "Previous" button you may go back to the "Sensor
Selection" sub-page, which has presently no other func-
tion.

6.10 Firmware Update

Due to the continuous development of our sensors, an
update of the sensor firmware is sometimes necessary.
This chapter describes how this is done using KiCenter.

Before you start the firmware update, please be sure that

the data connection between the computer and the sensor
as well as the power supply of the computer and sensor
are correct. An interruption of sensor communication/
power supply or a computer crash during the firmware
update can result in an irreparable destruction of the
sensor’s programming.

Step 1: Start the firmware update function

To start the firmware update, please click the "Firmware
Update" button in the tool bar.

Fig. 46: Screen view of "Firmware Update":

Step 1a

A message appears, prompting you to check the data

connection between computer and sensor as well as the
power supply.

Step 1b

Please make sure that both, the data connections and the
power supply, are correct and then confirm this message
by clicking "OK".

Step 2: Selecting the firmware file

Next, you will be prompted to select the firmware file
(*.fwu) you want to write to the sensor. Clicking "Open"
will confirm the firmware file and starts loading the new
firmware.

Troubleshooting

7. Troubleshooting

7.1 Cables and power supply

ƒƒ Check all connections to determine that each one is
complete and that the system is connected to a power
supply that provides voltage output within the specified
range.
ƒƒ Check that the correct cables have been used for all
connections.
ƒƒ The following problems can be caused by incorrect or
incomplete cable connections and/or connection to the
incorrect power supply voltage:
-- Output signals are not available to data acquisition
and/or connected PC
-- Sensor will not go out of standstill mode with vehicle
motion

7.2 Status Display and LED on Sensor Electronics

ƒƒ If all connections are correct and no faults are present,
the "PWR" (power) LED on the sensor electronic will
be illuminated orange
ƒƒ If the "PWR" LED is illuminated red, the polarity of the
power supply has been reversed and must be correc-
ted
ƒƒ The status display informs about the sensor status, i.e.
standstill, IP address, GPS information

7.3 Illumination
Check that the lamp in the sensor is illuminated. Check
and replace lamps as necessary. Also be sure that con-
nections and supply voltage are correct.

7.4 Sensor Lens (Protection Glass)

The sensor lens or protection glass (if there is any) may
occasionally become dirty, preventing proper operation.
Check and clean the sensor lens or protection glass
regularly.

CSMOTA_002-713e-08.16 Page 51
S-Motion, Non-contact Optical Sensors, Type CSMOTA...

7.5 Operating range

If the sensor is mounted out of the recommended height
range (standoff distance), no measurement signals will be
output. Check and correct mounting as necessary.

7.6 Software
ƒƒ If one or more output signals appear to be incorrect, the
sensor may have been set-up incorrectly via KiCenter
software. Check all relevant settings in KiCenter:
-- All analog voltage settings must be within range and
should be conform with the data acquisition system
settings to which they are connected
-- All digital pulse and resolution settings must be
set within range and should be conform with the
data acquisition system settings to which they are
connected
-- Check all offset values and recalibrate the sensor as
necessary
ƒƒ If no output signals are available and all connections
are correct, use the KiCenter test function to determine
that all outputs are fully operational

7.7 CAN
Problem: There are no messages or incorrect messages
on the CAN-bus.

Check to be sure that:

ƒƒ The electronics unit has power
ƒƒ The data acquisition system is connected to the elec
tronics of the S-Motion sensor
ƒƒ The data acquisition system and the sensor electronics
use the same settings for baud rate, CAN identifiers,
identifier types, data format, and CAN termination re-
sistor
ƒƒ If you use a data acquisition system with an accep-
tance filter, be sure the message from the sensor is not
disabled
ƒƒ The data acquisition system and the sensor electronics
use the same settings for the type of measured value
(signed or unsigned, number of bits)

To avoid problems with false data types or bit lengths, we

recommend using the .dbc file option.
You can use the KiCenter software to generate a setting
specific .dbc file.

Page 52 CSMOTA_002-713e-08.16
Troubleshooting

7.8 Environmental conditions

The sensor may occasionally interpret heavy spray
from snow or water as part of the road or track surface,
producing unexplained spikes in the output signals and/
or other anomalous measurement artifacts. Sensors
should be mounted away from the heaviest spray areas,
especially directly behind the rear wheels.

7.9 EMC Interference

If the sensor starts to send output signals without vehicle
being in motion, triggering may have been caused by
excessive EMC interference from the test vehicle. To
correct this condition, reset the sensor by disconnecting it
from the power supply and then re-connecting.

7.10 Service
If none of the above recommendations provides a solu-
tion, please contact us by phone +49 6441 9282 0 or
e-mail at info.kar@kistler.com. Before doing so, please be
ready to supply the following:
ƒƒ A ".kdx file saved from KiCenter Software to serve as
an example of the problem or fault condition
ƒƒ A list of all outputs that appear to be problematic, i.e.
analog, digital, CAN, USB
ƒƒ The serial numbers of all relevant components

The manufacturer's calibration is valid for a period of 12

months.

With the S-Motion sensor you have purchased a premium,

high-precision product. To assure continued optimum
performance, we recommend that you send it to Kistler
once a year for inspection, maintenance, and calibration.
