SUMMARY
The Suburb of Epping, based in Sydney's north-west, is a suburb where crime rates are
quite low. It resembles the typical residential suburbia. With its low to moderate crime
rates it grows to be a highly livable city in Sydney's west. However within this suburb
there is still crime even with its low rate, the most common crimes being Domestic
Violence, theft and robbery. More commonly committed by adult males. The NSW
Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research displays these facts and figures.

SUBURB PROFILE
The suburb of Epping is located 18 kilometers north-west of the Sydney CBD in the
local Government area of the City of Parramatta. As of the 2016 Census Epping had a
recorded population of 23,688, of these people 49.4% were registered as males and
50.6% as females, of this population there are 45 Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait
Islander people residing within Epping (ABS, 2016). In Epping the median age is 36
years old and the average household holds 2.9 people, Due to this and Eppings
geographical location this may suggest that Epping is a suburban location therefore
accommodating a mixture of single and family households. The Median weekly
household income is $1,973 and the median monthly mortgage repayments per
household, per month is $2,210. Renting Households within the Epping district pay an
average weekly rent of $530. Epping holds a population of 6,436 families. Of these
families the average amount of children is 1.7.

CRIMES
The suburb of Epping shows stable and somewhat non problematic crime rates
throughout the past two years from April 2020 to March 2022. The most common
criminality issue that occurs within this neighborhood is Domestic Violence. Throughout
October of 2020 Domestic Assault charges and cases were at their peak from the
available statistics. Per a population of 100,000 people in the month of October 2020
NSW suburbs had an average of 34.6 Domestic Assault cases and Epping had 35
within the suburb. This May have been due to the Covid 19 lockdown applying pressure
on relationships being forced to quarantine together all the time. Crime statistics in
Epping also showed a rate of 3.5 murders in March of 2021. This suburb also showed
consistent peaks of robbery in August and November of 2020 as well as March and
November of 2021. Sexual Assault cases are also evident in Epping with consistent
rates of 7-12 cases throughout each of the months. The most stable statistics for
offense in Epping is theft, statistics showed that for each month the amount of theft
charges within Epping were between 94-108.
OFFENDERS
Statistics showed that the majority of offenders in Epping were adults and not juveniles,
it also showed that again most offenders within this region were recorded as males. An
offender includes Lian Bin "Robert" Xie the perpetrator of the Epping family murder. Xie
brutally murdered the Lin family with a Hammer like object on Boundary Road in
Epping. He took the lives of a mother Yun Lin, father Min Lin and their three sons Irene
Lin, Henry Lin, Terry Lin. On 5 May 2011, Lian Bin Xie was arrested and charged with
the murders. After several abandoned trials, a third trial ended in December 2015 with a
hung jury. Xie was later granted bail. A retrial was held in 2016, with a jury finding Xie
guilty of the murders by a majority verdict on 12 January 2017. As seen within the crime
analysis Domestic Violence rates in Epping are relatively high as well as their weekly
income meaning they are most likely members of the middle class. This can suggest
offenders in this area are more likely to commit crimes at home because they are
members of the working class. Evidence from the National Library of Medicine suggests
that the highest prevalence of domestic violence occurred amongst the working class
and lower middle socio-economic classes. The most prominent reasons cited for the
physical violence was drug and alcohol abuse (37%) and communication differences
(16.3%).

VICTIMS
As the overall Crime Rate in Epping is quite low, there are minimal victims. The NSW
Crime Tool made by The NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research demonstrated
that most occurring Crime in the area and a majority of those figures contribute to
Domestic Assault. BOCSAR recorded an Rate per population of 100 000 of 32.9
Assaults in Epping in October of 2020 and 29.9 of that figure contributes to domestic
violence related assault. This displays that Victims in the area may be normal civilians
rather than organized criminals. Along with it may also be suggested that victims of
Assault related Crimes in Epping know the offender. There is little to suggest that
Epping has a trend of repeat victimization as risk factors like these occurring include
issues such as lower income, being unemployed, using Government services. In Epping
60.3% of the population and only 7.4% were unemployed in the 2016 census. This
suggests that repeat victimization is unlikely to occur.
