F: LESSON PHASES:
1. INTRODUCTION
A picture will be displayed in front of the learners.
This is the following picture that will be displayed:

The following questions will be asked to see what learners understand when it comes to substance
abuse.
The following questions will be asked:
1. What is substance abuse according to your understanding?
2. What substance abuse do you see in the picture?
3. Who does substance abuse normally affect?
2. DEVELOPMENT
STEP 1
After learners give their thoughts on the above question, the content will then be introduced by firstly
explaining that substance abuse, also known as drug abuse, is the use of a drug in amounts or by
methods which are harmful to the individual or others. Substance abuse isn't something you should
take lightly. It occurs when you use alcohol, prescription medicine, and other legal and illegal
substances too much or in the wrong way. Substance abuse differs from addiction. Many people with
substance abuse problems are able to quit or can change their unhealthy behaviour. Addiction, on the
other hand, is a disease. It means you can’t stop using even when your condition causes you harm.
Learners will be asked the following questions to ensure they understood the concept explanation:
1. What is drug abuse?
2. When does substance abuse occur?
3. Does substance abuse cause forever addiction to drugs?
STEP 2
There are many types of substance abuse, but we focus more on two main types of substance use
disorders: illegal use disorder and legal use disorder. Some people abuse both substances, while
others are addicted to one or the other. Alcohol affects everyone differently. But if you drink too much
and too often, your chance of an injury or accident goes up. Heavy drinking also can cause liver and
other health problems or lead to a more serious alcohol disorder.
If you’re a man and you drink more than four drinks on any day or more than 14 in a week, you’re
drinking too much. For women, heavy drinking means more than three drinks in one day or more than
seven drinks a week. Cocaine, this drug speeds up your whole body. When you use cocaine, you may
talk, move, or think very fast. You may feel happy and full of energy. But your mood may then shift to
anger. You may feel like someone is out to get you. It can cause you to do things that don’t make
sense. Using cocaine for a long time will lead to strong cravings for the drug.
Learners will be asked the following questions to ensure they are still following the content:
1. Give two main types of substance abuse.
2. What happens when you drink too much?
The following picture will be displayed to show learners different types of drugs:
STEP3
Learners will be given some time to ask questions about today’s lesson. Those who need clarification
on what was taught in class will then have to raise up their hands then clarification to them will be
granted.

3. CONSOLIDATION/LESSON CONCLUSION
Finally, l will conclude the lesson by giving out a class activity worksheet whereby learners have to
answer seven questions as a group. Each group must have no more than 5 members.
The following questions will be asked:
1. What is substance abuse?
2. Give three types of drugs shown in picture 1.
3. What parts do you damage when drinking alcohol?
4. According to the graph, which country has the highest rate of substance abuse from 2012 to
2013?
5. Sate the percentage of substance abuse Alabama has in 2013 and 2014
6. Give two main types of substance abuse.
7. In a paragraph of approximately eight lines, explain what happens when you overuse drugs.
After learners have completed their group classwork, I will then give them homework which they will
have to do it individually. The homework must be written in point form and it must not have more than
90 words. This homework is an essay.
The following is the homework question I will give them:
In your own words, write an essay and discuss how you think people can try to keep themselves away
from substance abuse and how those already affected can be helped.

G: LEARNER ACTIVITY
Describe the learner activity you plan to use. If you are using a worksheet, attach it
to the Lesson Plan)
Learners will be given seven questions to answer as a group. They will have to discuss the questions
as a group and then answer them according to their understating. Each group must have no more
than 5 members. The activity is given as a worksheet.
NB: Worksheet is attached at the end of lesson plan
The following are questions that will be found on the activity:
1. What is substance abuse?
2. Give three types of drugs.
After the activity, I will then give them a home work which is an essay Home work.

H: CHALLENGES ENCOUNTERED DURING PLANNING OF LESSON

 The challenge encountered during planning was finding google pictures that correspond very
well with the introduction.
 The challenge encountered during planning was not having enough textbooks as resources as
they have more information.

I: REFLECTION ON THE PRESENTATION OF YOUR LESSON

1. What went well during the presentation of your lesson?
What went well during the lesson presentation is that the learners were active and responding to what
they see in the pictures displayed and they were willing to know where slaves came from and paid
attention very well.

2. What challenges did you experience during the presentation of your lesson?
The challenges I experienced was not having many pictures for the whole class to see as the school
photocopying machine was broken so I had to move around with my laptop showing them pictures
which was challenging and a waste of time.
3. How could you improve on the presentation of your lesson?
I can improve my presentations of my lesson by having as many resources as I need to gather more
relevant information.

4. Did you experience any interesting incidents during the presentation of your
lesson?
Yes, I did experience interesting incidents, which is where by learners communicate very well with
others when working together and that gave an interest to me to group them into groups and engage
with whole class discussion.
