MODULE 1:

Pre activity:

1. After watching the whole video, what have you learned from the students sharing their ideas
about the topic?
Ans: After watching the whole video about “Why do Research?” What I have learned from the
students sharing their ideas about the topic is that even if we don’t like research but still
research is part of our life. Doing research might be boring but it gives us a lot of knowledge
about the things that we don’t know and have advanced knowledge from the others. Sometimes
we didn’t noticed that we apply research in our life. Like for example “ you have a friend who is
very close to you but suddenly she ignore you and don’t even know why she is ignoring you, so
you’re going to find out the reason why she keeps ignoring you.” In that point you are doing
research because you look for the answer of something that you didn’t know. And that’s what I
have learned from this topic.
2. Why is this important in your course?
Ans: It is important to my course because research will help me to be more knowledgeable
about my course. It easy for me to solve problems and to make some decisions by the help of
research.

Let’s Answer:

Why is it important for anyone in our society to have knowledge of research methods?

- It is important for anyone in our society to have knowledge of research methods because having
knowledge on something that you didn’t know is astounding. A society have knowledge to
research will have a better society and people in that society will be fully equipped to deal with
the problems that they are facing and leads to the advancement of society.

How can research be of help to the present needs of human beings?

- Research can be of to help to the present needs of human being by the curiosity, if we are
curious we start to learn new things and even more creative. A human who is curious is craving
to know and understand is the driving force behind our development as individuals and even
our success as a species.

What is research in the context of development? What is its role in the development process?

- The process by which a company works to generate new knowledge that it might use to create
new technology, products, services, or systems that it will either use or sell.

Unit II

Direction: After listening on the recorded lecture, Identify following studies whether each is descriptive
survey, descriptive observational, correlational or experimental.

1. A group who listened to K-pop music while solving math problems performed better than a
group who did not listen to music

Answer: _Experimental_

2. A woman who experienced damage to his prefrontal cortex following an accident demonstrated
increase impulsivity and recklessness.

Answer: ___Observational__
3. The effect of receiving Brownies as a reward on time taken to complete an assigned task was
assessed. Participants who receive brownies took much less time to complete the task than
participants who didn’t receive a cookie.

Answer: __Experimental___

4. Research participants were asked to keep track of how long they sleep and rest each night for
two months. Then they completed a memory test. Investigators found that the less a person
slept on average, the worse they did on the test.

Answer: __Survey__

5. 25% of Filipinos report to having trouble sleeping most nights

Answer: __Survey___

6. The length of time someone has been a jeepney driver is associated with bigger hippocampus
size and suffering from backpains.

Answer: __Observational__

Case questions:

1. What makes this a descriptive study?

Ans: A researcher wants to know why individuals in Community A have a higher rate of a rare form of
cancer when compared to those living in Community B.

2. Why did the researcher collect information about the lifestyle of community residents? What
about the type of businesses present in each community? Medical records?

Ans: To find out the reasons for the differences in cancer rates in these two communities, the
investigator surveyed residents about their lifestyle, noted the types of businesses that were present in
the community and searched medical records.

3. Can the investigator establish that the chemical plant and cigarette smoking are the cause for
the higher rate of cancer among those in Community A?

Ans: The researcher found that the headquarters for the Toxico Chemical Plant is located in Community
A, there is a higher rate of cigarette smoking in this community and residents tended to delay or skip
going to the doctor for an annual checkup.

4. Can the investigator establish that lower smoking rates and the absence of a chemical factory
explains the lower rate of cancer among those in Community B?

Ans: In Community B, the largest employer was a department store and on average, residents did not
smoke as much as residents from Community A. However, like individuals from Community A,
Community B residents tended to delay or skip their annual checkup with their doctor.

Case questions:

1. What makes both of these studies experimental?

Ans: An investigator wants to evaluate whether a new technique to teach math to elementary
school students is more effective than the standard teaching method. Using an experimental
design, the investigator divides the class randomly (by chance) into two groups and calls them
"Group A" and "Group B." The students cannot choose their own group. The random assignment
process results in two groups that should share equal characteristics at the beginning of the
experiment.

2. What type of information might the researcher collect in these two studies to see if the
treatment (e.g. new teaching method or herbal supplement) is effective?
Ans: In Group A, the teacher uses a new teaching method to teach the math lesson. In Group B,
the teacher uses a standard teaching method to teach the math lesson.
3. Can the researcher establish cause and effect in either or both of these two studies?
Ans: The investigator compares test scores at the end of the semester to evaluate the success of
the new teaching method compared to the standard teaching method. At the end of the study,
the results indicated that the students in the new teaching method group scored significantly
higher on their final exam than the students in the standard teaching group.

4. What would happen if the researcher allowed the students to study together or talk about the
different methods that were being used to teach the math lesson? Would this be a good or a
bad idea? How would this influence the study results?
Ans: At the end of the study, the results indicated that the students in the new teaching method
group scored significantly higher on their final exam than the students in the standard teaching
group.

5. What if the fitness instructor allowed participants to take other herbal supplements in addition
to the supplements being tested? Would this be a good or a bad idea? How would this influence
the study results?
Ans: The instructor gives Group A the herbal supplement and Group B receives the placebo
(sugar pill). The students’ fitness level is compared before and after six weeks of consuming the
supplement or the sugar pill. No differences in performance ability were found between the two
groups suggesting that the herbal supplement was not effective.
