SPECIFYING A

PURPOSE
1
When specifying the purpose of research, it's essential to
clearly define the goals and objectives of the study to ensure
that the research is focused and meaningful. The research
purpose is a statement of "why" the study is being
conducted, or the goal of the study.

HOW DO YOU SPECIFY RESEARCH QUESTION?
A purpose statement should focus on a single idea or
concept with a broad definition of that idea or concept. How
the concept will be investigated should also be included, as
well as participants in the study and study locations to give
the reader a sense of with whom and where the project or
study will occur.

The three main purposes of research:
Explanatory
Descriptive
Exploratory

EXPLANATORY
In explanatory research, your research question deals with
“why” you should explain why these things happen, what causes
them, and what influences them.rs the question of “why.”

DESCRIPTIVE
If you are doing descriptive research, your initial question will likely
start with the word “how,” which means you describe how things are
happening
4
EXPLORATORY
Exploratory research is usually conducted when a researcher
has just begun an investigation and wishes to understand the
topic generally.
5
But here are some general steps to help you specify the
purpose of your research:
Identify the Research Topic:
Start by selecting a specific topic or issue that you want to
investigate. Make sure the topic is relevant and interesting to
you.
Formulate a Research Question or Hypothesis:
create a clear and concise research question or hypothesis that
you aim to address through your research. This question should
guide your study.
5
Determine the Type of Research:
Decide whether your research will be exploratory (seeking to
understand a new or understudied area), descriptive
(presenting facts and characteristics of a phenomenon),
explanatory (identifying causes and effects)
Specify the Research Objectives:
Define specific objectives or goals that will help you achieve the
research purpose. These objectives should be measurable and
provide a clear path to answering your research question.
5
Choose the Research Approach:
Determine the research methodology and approach you will
use, such as qualitative, quantitative, mixed methods, case
study, survey, experiments, or other research designs. Select
the most appropriate methods for your research question and
objectives.

Define the Scope of the Research:

Set boundaries and limitations for your research. Determine what
you will include and exclude from your study to maintain focus
and feasibility.
5
Identify the Target Audience:
Determine the audience or stakeholders who will benefit from
or be interested in the research findings. This can influence the
communication and reporting of results.

Justify the Significance of the Research:

Explain why your research is important and how it contributes to
existing knowledge or addresses a specific problem or need.
Highlight the potential impact of your findings.
5
Review and Refine:
Finally, review and refine your research purpose, question, and
objectives to ensure they are clear, achievable, and aligned with
your chosen methodology and resources. Throughout the
research process, it's important to stay focused on your defined
purpose and objectives to maintain a clear direction. Regularly
review and update your research plan as needed, and adapt to
any new insights or challenges that may arise during the
research journey.
