SOLVING PROBLEMS FOR MEASURES OF POSITION FOR GROUPED DATA

ACTIVITY 8
A. Arrange the students from shortest to tallest and answer the following questions:

Name of Student Height (in cm)

Gary 165
Cate 162
Jessie 160
Dan 159
Carlo 157
Mark 155
Marie 153
Faith 152
Shane 150
Ana 148
Harold 143

1. Who is the tallest?

➢ Gary is the tallest among all the students.

2. Who stands in the middle of the line?

➢ Mark stands in the middle of the line.
• Solution
▪ To get the middle most value or the second quartile (Q2):
𝟐(𝒏+𝟏) 𝟐(𝟏𝟏+𝟏)
▪ The position of 𝑸𝟐 = 𝟒
= 𝟒
= 𝟔𝒕𝒉
▪ th
The 6 number in the set is Mark, therefore the one who stands in the middle
of the line is Mark.

3. What is the height of the median or the 2nd quartile?

➢ The height of Mark, which is the median or the 2nd quartile is 155 cm.
4. What height is at the 25th percentile?
➢ The height at the 25th percentile is 150 cm.
• Solution
▪ To get the 25th percentile (P25):
𝐤(𝒏+𝟏) 𝟐𝟓(𝟏𝟏+𝟏)
▪ The position of 𝐏𝒌 = 𝟏𝟎𝟎
= 𝐏𝟐𝟓 = 𝟏𝟎𝟎
= 𝟑𝒓𝒅
▪ The 3rd number in the set is 150 cm, therefore the 25th percentile is 150 cm.

B. The scores of 20 students from 50-item test in Mathematics are tabulated below:

Name of Student Scores

Anthony 49
Hanna 47
Mike 47
Carlo 46
Grace 42
Grace 39
Henry 39
David 38
Andrew 38
Jasmine 34
Leo 34
May 33
Diane 32
Janice 30
Judy 29
Kevin 29
Bruce 27
Candice 27
Mark 26
Ella 25

1. What is the 3rd quartile of their scores?

➢ The 3rd quartile of their scores is 41.25.
• Solution
▪ Locate the position of the score in the distribution:
𝟑(𝐧+𝟏) 𝟑(𝟐𝟎+𝟏)
Position of 𝑸𝟑 = 𝟒
= 𝟒
= 𝟏𝟓. 𝟕𝟓

▪ Since the result is a decimal, interpolation is required:

Note that the 15.75 position is located between the fifteenth and sixteenth
data. That is between the numbers 39 and 42.

❖ Step 1: Subtract the sixteenth data from the fifteenth data.

42 – 39 = 3

❖ Step 2: Multiply the result by the decimal part obtained in the

second step(position of 𝑄3 ).
The position is 15.75, so the decimal part is 0.75
3(0.75) = 2.25

❖ Step 3: Add the product to the fifteenth or smaller number.

39 + 2.25 = 41.25

▪ Therefore, the value of the 𝑸𝟑 is 41.25.

2. What is the 50th percentile?

➢ The 50th percentile is 34.
• Solution
▪ Locate the position of the score in the distribution:
𝐤(𝐧+𝟏) 𝟓𝟎(𝟐𝟎+𝟏)
Position of 𝐏𝒌 = 𝟏𝟎𝟎
= 𝐏𝟓𝟎 = 𝟏𝟎𝟎
= 𝟏𝟎. 𝟓

▪ Note that the 10.5 position is located between the tenth and eleventh data. The
tenth data is 34 and the eleventh data is also 34. Since the tenth and eleventh
data are the same, interpolation is not required.
▪ Therefore, the value of the 𝐏𝟓𝟎 is 34.

3. Those scores that fall below the 2nd decile failed. Who among the students failed in the test?
➢ Bruce, Candice, Mark and Ella are among the students who failed in the test.
• Solution
▪ Locate the position of the score in the distribution:
𝐤(𝐧+𝟏) 𝟐(𝟐𝟎+𝟏)
Position of 𝐃𝒌 = 𝟏𝟎
= 𝑫𝟐 = 𝟏𝟎
= 𝟒. 𝟐

▪ Since the result is a decimal, interpolation is required:

Note that the 4.2 position is located between the fourth and fifth data. That is
between the numbers 27 and 29.

❖ Step 1: Subtract the fifth data from the fourth data.

29 – 27 = 2

❖ Step 2: Multiply the result by the decimal part obtained in the

second step(position of 𝐷2).
The position is 4.2, so the decimal part is 0.2
2(0.2) = 0.4
❖ Step 3: Add the product to the fourth or smaller number.
27 + 0.4 = 27.4

▪ Therefore, the value of the 𝑫𝟐 is 27.4 and the students who failed are Bruce,
Candice, Mark and Ella.

4. The teacher will give rewards to students whose scores fall in the 90th percentile and up. Who
among the students will receive a reward?
➢ Hanna, Mike and Anthony are among the students who will receive a reward.
• Solution
▪ Locate the position of the score in the distribution:
𝐤(𝐧+𝟏) 𝟗𝟎(𝟐𝟎+𝟏)
Position of 𝐏𝒌 = = 𝐏𝟗𝟎 = = 𝟏𝟖. 𝟗
𝟏𝟎𝟎 𝟏𝟎𝟎

▪ Note that the 18.9 position is located between the eighteenth and nineteenth
data. The eighteenth data is 47 and the nineteenth data is also 47. Since the
eighteenth and nineteenth data are the same, interpolation is not required.
▪ Therefore, the value of the 𝐏𝟗𝟎 is 47 and the students who will receive a
reward are Hanna, Mike and Anthony.

C. Margareth took a college entrance test. Her score is at the 85th percentile. If there are 159 test
takers:

1. At most, how many students have scores lower than Margareth’s?

➢ There are 134 students who have scores lower than Margareth’s.
• Solution
𝟏𝟓𝟗(𝟎. 𝟖𝟒) = 133.56 = 134

2. At most, how many students have scores higher than Margareth’s?

➢ There are 24 students who have scores higher than Margareth’s
• Solution
𝟏𝟓𝟗(𝟎. 𝟏𝟓) = 23.85 = 24

1. What is the median salary?
➢ The median salary is ₱41666.17.

To solve for Q2:

𝑘𝑁 2(260)
Identify the class containing the Q2 class = = = 130. This means we need to
4 4
locate the class interval containing the 130th data. That would be within the class interval
40000 – 44999. Let us then identify the values required for the formula:

𝒌𝑵
− 𝑪𝒇𝒃
𝑸𝒌 = 𝑳𝑩 + [ 𝟒 ]ⅈ
LB = 39999.5 𝒇𝑸𝒌

N = 260 𝟐 (𝟐𝟔𝟎)
− 𝟏𝟐𝟎
𝟒
Q2 = 39999.5 + [ ] 5000
𝒄𝒇𝒃 = 120 𝟑𝟎

𝒇𝑸𝒌 = 30
Q2 = 39999.5 + 1666.67
ⅈ = 5000 Q2 ≈ 41666.17

2. Those salaries greater than or equal to the 85th percentile and up belong to the top management.
What is the minimum salary in the top management?
➢ The minimum salary in the top management is ₱62666.17.

To solve for P85:

𝑘𝑁 85(260)
Identify the class containing the P85 class = = = 221. This means we need to locate
100 100
th
the class interval containing the 221 data. That would be within the class interval 60000 –
64999. Let us then identify the values required for the formula:

𝒌𝑵
𝟏𝟎𝟎 − 𝑪𝒇𝒃
𝑷𝒌 = 𝑳𝑩 + [ ]ⅈ
LB = 59999.5 𝒇𝑷𝒌

N = 260 𝟖𝟓 (𝟐𝟔𝟎)
− 𝟐𝟏𝟑
𝟏𝟎𝟎
P85 = 59999.5 + [ ] 5000
𝒄𝒇𝒃 = 213 𝟏𝟓

𝒇𝑷𝒌 = 15
P85 = 59999.5 + 2666.67
ⅈ = 5000
P85 ≈ 62666.17
