LinkedIn: Professionalism Assignment

Topic:
Establishing professionalism and visibility in the workforce.

Purpose:
Professional communication, professional behavior, and professional presentation are all vital
in the workforce. Establishing your ethos through these levels of professionalism are integral
when searching for jobs, applying to jobs, pushing out your resume and cover letter, and so on.
In HUM 3910, we have been focused on professional language: communication that is formal,
clear, direct, and establishes ethos. However, those language skills extend outside the walls of
academia.

Instructions:

Part One
To practice these levels of professionalism, the goal of this assignment is to create a LinkedIn
professional profile: LinkedIn.com. Once there, registration is user friendly and easy to
complete. The following items are required for completion of assignment Part A:

1. Name (20 characters-maximum field limit): First name and Last name
2. Headline (120 characters-maximum field limit): Use the link below for assistance
in creating an effective and engaging headline: LinkedIn.com Makeover
3. Summary (2000 characters-maximum field limit): Use the link below for
assistance in creating a keyword-rich summary: Business 2 Business - LinkedIn
Profile
4. Experience: Include current and past employment information and/or internship
experience – focus on transferable skills and industry specific keywords that
successfully describe your skills, duties, and accomplishments.
5. Company name (100 characters-maximum field limit)
6. Job title (100 characters-maximum field limit)
7. Location (80 characters-maximum field limit)
8. Description (2000 characters-maximum field limit): If you have limited or no
work experience then use the link below for creative ways to compensate for a

10. Privacy Settings: Be mindful of privacy settings, i.e., keeping your profile private
or making it public-facing. Make sure these align with your preferences and
comfort level.

Part Two:
Linked in is a great networking tool, as well as a tool that enables you to sell your skills and
share your resume with prospective employers. Because your profile is front-facing and is a
reflection of you and your competence, it must be professional. While setting up your profile,
be mindful of the language you use to represent your skills and competencies, and to
demonstrate your professionalism and ethos.

Once you create your LinkedIn professional profile, take a screenshot of it/share the link, and
on the same document, in 3-4 paragraphs, answer the following questions:

● Why is it important to have an accurate, robust, and professional LinkedIn profile if one
is actively searching for a job or currently working in a professional field?

● What type of language did you use when creating your profile and why? Give specific
examples and reasons for its usage.

● How do your language choices represent your professionalism?

● How will you use your profile to help with future networking of your skills and
education?
