Student instructions
 You will be observed completing an examination of the human body,
identifying the basic structures and functions of the body systems and
associated components.
 You will need to explain processes, conditions and resources required by the
body to support healthy functioning.
 Interpret and follow written instructions containing medical terminology.
 Use appropriate medical terminology as directed, in oral communication
with patients, fellow workers and health professionals.
 Identify and use appropriate abbreviations for medical terms and associated
processes.
 You will be observed and assessed two times throughout the allocated
assessment completion due date.
Assessment overview  This assessment will be a mixture of open and closed book.
Part A will be closed book and completed in groups.
Part B will be open book and completed one on one.
 Reasonable adjustment can be provided for this assessment task which may
include providing extra time to complete the tasks. You must be told to
discuss their options with the teacher/assessor, if required.
 The teacher/assessor can assist you with clarifying any of the instructions but
cannot assist you with the tasks during the observations.
 The assessment will not proceed if for any reason it is not safe to do so. The
teacher/assessor will advise you of the reason for suspending the
assessment, and what safety action should be taken. The teacher/assessor
will advise you of revised arrangements for the assessment when it is safe to
do so.

All observable behaviour/tasks must be observed in order for you to be deemed
satisfactory.

This assessment task has two parts:

Part A
For this component your assessor will observe you undertaking a simulated patient
Task(s) to be assessed examination of a body mannequin or another class member to identify the location
of the major organs of the body. You need to explain what you’re doing and what
you are identifying to your patient, using laymen’s terms and to your fellow
student/mannequin and to your assessor using the appropriate medical terminology.

Part B
For this component you are required to read an excerpt from a medical history,
correctly expanding abbreviations and using the correct pronunciation of all medical
terminology terms which are highlighted in RED.

Time allowed Part A – 30 minutes


Part B – 15 minutes

For successful completion of this assessment students must demonstrate they can:

He has chest pain and fever. He has a history of
arthritis, acute painful bilateral inflammation of the
knee joints and chondromalacia of both patellae.

requires immediate treatment. I would be grateful if
you would take over the management of this patient.
