Mother-tongue based education has been put into practiced to develop the learner’s critical

thinking, creative thinking, communicative skills, and collaborative minds which are essentials in today’s
new global set up. Also, this program is not just to change the way a teacher speak nor the modification of
learning materials, it has a deeper function. Moreover, it addresses the cultural discriminations wherein
minority languages are humiliated by dominant language speakers.
Before, education in the Philippines focused on understanding and learning the language; a
superficial one. But this was overturned by the Department Education and has mainstreamed the MTB MLE
that intensify the development of the cognitive and social aspects of the learners allowing them to have
meaningful involvement in the classroom. Their home languages have been recognized and
institutionalized in the academe.
The L1 is utilized in the MTB MLE and it also allowed the learners to effectively transition to Filipino
and English, both vital languages. Moreover, various studies have found out that mother-tongue instruction
improved the academic performance of the learners. Learners learn best when home language is used as
they are simply familiar to it.
Such implementation of macro changes in the education sector must receive full support from all
stakeholders to ensure its effectivity. Its rationale and the entire essence of this program must.
Furthermore, availability of MT resources should not be forgotten as well as the time given for the teachers
to craft such materials intended to MT. On the other hand, there are teachers who are not familiar to the MT
in that specific place he teaches in. On this matter, teachers need to undergo trainings to enhance and
develop their understanding of the grammar and structure of that MT in that specific place.

Assimilation is moving from heritage language into a dominant language using home language in social
purposes only.
Language Maintenance is supporting the home language at the same time immersing oneself with other
languages.
