The reception characteristics of the GPS antenna are limited when the soft top is closed.
This means that vehicles coming out of a non-digitalized area e.g. underground parking facilities, require longer
to for the guidance feature to start working!
Trunk lid
The reception characteristics of the GPS antenna are not limited when the soft top is closed.
Coordinate the installation position with the customer (vehicle owner). Install the GPS antenna on the rear shelf
only in exceptional cases. Exceptional case: Customer makes purchasing decision dependent on the
appearance. In all cases advise the customer of the disadvantages of installation on the rear shelf (customer
satisfaction).
On all sedans and coupes, the GPS antenna can be mounted on the rear shelf as an alternative to the instrument
panel.
The TrafficStar navigation system is available in two versions from the Becker Company:
The GPS antenna should be installed only in a vertical position with a maximum deviation of 10° from
horizontal.
The GPS antenna should always have a free view of the sky. Thermal insulated windows can significantly
reduce the function of the GPS antenna.
When installing the GPS antenna, always ensure that the arched surface points away from the vehicle.
Changing the installation location inside of the vehicle after the system is put into operation has no effect on the
GPS reception.

Inform customer that the retrofitted dynamic guidance only operates with fee-free TMC traffic messages. The
TCS information source (subject to fees) is not available.
Vehicles with telephone code 316 or 317 can be retrofitted with an Audio 30 APS navigation system.
Ensure that the Audio 30 APS navigation system is a unit with part number A 208 820.....Older units with part
number A 168 820 .. .. are not capable of assuming the master function in the D2B- ring.
The Audio 30 APS does not have a number pad. For this reason, it is not possible to control the telephone over
the radio (see operating instructions).
On vehicles (as of approx. 07.99) with multifunction steering wheel (telephone control with keys on steering
wheel) this function is then also possible with the Audio 30 APS navigation system.
There are two different installation locations for the GSP antenna:
1. Standard GPS antenna from DaimlerChrysler on roof or trunk lid. This version offers the best reception
and is therefore preferable.
2. Use of magnetic antenna in vehicle passenger compartment. This version is part of the kit from the
Becker company and installation is described in Becker installation instructions.
The GPS antenna can only be installed horizontally with a maximum deviation of 10° from horizontal.
The GPS antenna should always have an unobstructed view of the sky. Tinted windows can reduce the function
of the GPS antenna considerably.

For vehicle models 170, 202, 203, 208, 210, 215, 220, 230, 463 an identification plate is located on the fiber
optic cable wiring harness behind the radio on which the fiber optic cable modules (1, 2, 3, 4) specially fitted to
these vehicles are specified together with their exact length.
With models 129, 414 the identification plate is in the trunk next to the CD changer.
With model 168, the identification plate is in the passenger footwell in the area of the control unit box. If there
is no length specification on the identification plate, the respective fiber optic cable module must be removed
and the necessary length measured.

With repairs, the individual fiber optic cable modules with corresponding length specification can be
ordered (see spare-parts documentation Group 82).
Routing
The inserts (5) of the fiber optic cable modules may only be routed as in production. The fiber optic cable
modules must always be provided with a protective cap when routing. For every vehicle model, the sequence of
components in the D2B ring is specifically predetermined. The components are connected by fiber optic cable
modules. They are secured to a wiring harness with an orange-colored casing.
Danger of breaking! Do not kink fiber optic cable, route over sharp edges or bend in radii smaller than 25
mm. Tensile forces on inserts must not exceed 65 N.
The fiber optic cable must not be exposed to temperatures greater than 85°C or lower than -40°C. Do not
squeeze fiber optic cable, in other words do not compress with clamps or cable ties.
The Digital Data Bus ring (D2B) connects the new radio generation and COMAND (monitor) to the CD
changer (CDC) (USA preinstallation), telephone and portable CTEL. The sound amplifier remains wired as
COMAND (monitor) to the CD changer (CDC) (USA preinstallation), telephone and portable CTEL. The sound
amplifier remains wired as before with Models 129, 170, 202, 208 and 210. The radio and COMAND as head
unit (HU) performs the master function and also forms the interface to the Control Area Network bus Class B

The sequence represents the current maximum equipment. If special equipment (SA) is omitted, the
respective item is deleted, resulting in a new ring sequence.
As of September 1999 it is possible to read out the current actual configuration of a functioning D2B ring by
means of STAR DIAGNOSIS. This is particularly important in the case of later expansion of the D2B ring and
when retrofitting D2B components e.g. telephone.
In the diagnosis system there is the menu item "Retrofitting D2B components". Under this menu item, the
current actual configuration of a vehicle can be read out and written back immediately as a new nominal
configuration. The process is self-explanatory.
In this case the components in the D2B ring (connected components) are:
Radio (A2)
The information in the D2B ring travels only in one direction (arrows). The information enters the fiber
optic cable modules M1 and M2 at the white insert (ws) and exits through the red insert (rt) at the next

Print out actual configuration for corresponding vehicle and use as document for conversion.
Retrofitting a CTEL with D2B optical waveguide technology is only advisable for vehicles in which D2B ring
components are present, and only in combination with an Audio 30 radio.
Vehicles not equipped with these components should, where possible, be retrofitted with conventional CTELs,
which are available from Mercedes-Benz accessories.
Vehicles equipped with the TELE AID emergency call system (code 347) or taxi panic call system (code 930)
may for safety reasons also only have conventional CTELs retrofitted to them.
Vehicles with code 273 have been prepared for the system installation of conventional CTELs, which are
available from Mercedes-Benz accessories. Here it is not possible to operate the phone via the multifunction
steering wheel.
It is more practical to install a CTEL with D2B optical waveguide technology in vehicles (as of approx. 7/99)

fitted with a multifunction steering wheel (CTEL operation via keys mounted on steering wheel).
Here, either a radio from the new Audio or COMAND series must be installed.
With regard to an Audio 30 APS radio, it is necessary to ensure that it is a device bearing the following part
number A 208 820 .. .. . Older devices with part number A 168 820 .. .. are incapable of conducting the master
functions in the D2B ring.
The Audio 30 APS and Audio 10 radios are not equipped with a numeric keypad. This means that it is not
possible to operate the CTEL via the radio (refer to owner's manual).
Retrofitting a telephone with D2B fiber optic cable technology is only recommended for vehicles in which D2B
ring components are already present, e.g. Audio 30 radio.
Vehicles without these components should be retrofitted with a conventionally connected telephone supplied by
Mercedes-Benz accessories department.
Vehicles with code 273 are preequipped for conventionally connected telephones supplied by Mercedes-Benz
accessories department. Operation with the multi-function steering wheel is then not possible.
On vehicles with multi-function steering wheel (telephone operation via buttons on steering wheel) it is
recommended to retrofit a telephone with D2B fiber optic cable technology.
For this purpose it is necessary that a radio of the new Audio series or COMAND is installed.
A key pad is not present on Audio 30 APS or Audio 10 radio. It is therefore not possible to operate the
telephone with the radio (see Owner's Manual).

Vehicles with preinstallation for portable CTEL system (code 278) or D-network portable CTEL (code
317) Nokia 3110 may be converted to the new portable CTEL generation Nokia 5110, 5130, 6110, 6150, 6210.
The new mobile phone generation 6150 and 6210 are dual band mobile phones (GSM network). On vehicles
equipped with steering-wheel controls the mobile CTEL can also be operated from the steering wheel.
The dual band function requires installation of a compensator for the GSM network (A28/3) as well as
the conversion of the antenna line (12) and installation of a voltage supply by means of a wiring harness to the
compensator for the GSM network (13).
The more extensive conversion expense for the dual band function should be discussed with the customer.
Vehicles with CODE 854 and portable CTEL Nokia 6150 are already equipped with a compensator for
E-network (A28/3).
For the conversion to Nokia 6210 only the resistor from the conversion kit needs to be connected to the
compensator, the adapter placed on the portable CTEL bracket and the new D2B interface (A59/1) attached.
The interface for Nokia 6210 functions only as of the portable CTEL software release 4.36. All older
Nokia 6210 must be subjected to a software update.
