Introduction

On the GlobalNews.ca platform, I discovered a news article that talks about the recent

crime of Damion Patrick John Ryan and Adam Richard Pearson, two Canadians, together with an

Iranian, Naji Sharifi Zindashti, who are alleged to have masterminded a murder-for-hire plan

against two people in Maryland (Boutilier, 2024). The well-constructed but dangerous plot was

made between December 2020 and March 2021, which is also going to be the focus of this

analysis, especially raising questions on the issues of crime, its representation in the media, and

the complexities of the justice system (Boutilier, 2024). In our study, we will try to explore these

themes from all sides using examples and knowledge provided in our course materials.

This crime, described in the news article, is known as murder, which is a very serious

felony. In order to investigate this news report from the angle of criminology, I will employ

Chapter 3 “Media and Crime,” Chapter 1 “What is Crime?,” and Chapter 2 “Typologies and

Patterns of Crime” from our course pack. Additionally, I will try to trace links with Chapter 10

“Justice Systems” to reflect on how justice is sought in respect of the injured parties.

Summary of the Crime/Article

This article talks about a scary story. It's about a plan to kill someone for money. This

plan was set up by three men named Ryan, Pearson, and Zindashti. From what the report says,

Ryan was part of a biker gang called the Hells Angels. He had a lot of contacts in the criminal

world. He asked Pearson, another member of the same biker gang, to do the dirty work.

Zindashti, who is from Iran, is said to have been the person who made the whole plan (Boutilier,

2024). He also arranged everything. The plan was very detailed and involved a lot of secret

messages. This shows just how careful the criminals were. It also shows that crime can be an

international problem.

Media Representation of the Crime

How the press presents crime shapes people's ideas and grasp of it. The story talks in a

way that underscores how bad the crime is. It calls it "a plot to kill for money." It also points out

the involvement of those linked to criminal groups. Even though this paints a clear picture of the

crime's gravity, it also brings up doubts about the press maybe making things sound worse than

they are. More than that, the crime's portrayal impacts conversation and actions relating to

policy. This emphasizes why it's important to carefully review how the media shows criminal

behavior (Hassan & Lett, 2023) .

Criminological Perspectives

When you look at crime from a crime study view, reported offenses give us important

understanding. This understanding is about how crime is built by society and its many sides. In

our lessons, we learn that crime isn't just a law term. It's also something that society and culture
4

shape. Some criminals are related to big crime groups. It shows us how society and crime can

mix together in complicated ways. Also, we learned from Chapter 3 how key it is to closely look

at how the media pictures crime (Hassan & Lett, 2023). Looking at this can help us get how

wide-ranging the effect of crime reports can be on society.

Justice Systems and Victim Advocacy

Justice means thinking about the crime's effects on victims and their families. Lesson 10

in our study guides highlights that victims' aid and related services are key to a balanced justice

system (Hassan & Lett, 2023). In this situation, the supposed murder-for-hire victims must get

justice and backup during the court case. Besides, police must carry out solid investigations to

blame those responsible and stop the same crimes later on.

Conclusion

This news story involving Damion Patrick John Ryan and Adam Richard Pearson tells of

a scary murder-for-hire plot. It makes us question things about crime, media, and getting justice.

We dive deeper into the case by checking it out with our class materials, using knowledge of

crime. To keep moving, we have to look closely at how media talks about crime. We must push

for justice systems that care first about victims. We ourselves have to be careful about what

media we take in. We need to know how crime stories can change how the public sees things and

reacts to them.

So, this plot is a mixed bag involving two Canadians, a foreign national, and a crime

group. This case isn't simple. It's got pieces that go into crime rings, global secrets, and how the

media shows it all. Looking at it with a crime expert's eyes helps. We can cut up and understand

different bits, like how we act like crime is built by society. Or how the media talks about illegal

acts.

Lastly, let's put victim support and justice system glasses on. This way, we highlight

putting victims first. It's also about making sure the legal system is fair and equal. This whole

thing, in the end, shows us two big things. One, crime has a lot of different sides. Second,

studying crime is vital to understand and handle complex illegal acts.

Today's crimes can be complicated. We need to observe it from various aspects. The key

areas are law, sociology, and criminology. Analyze the way media portrays crime. Advocate for

balanced and fair justice systems. Doing this contributes to constructing a secure society. A

place where all feel protected and esteemed.
