PROBLEM STATEMENT
A traditional hammer is a fundamental hand tool with a long history dating back centuries. It
typically consists of a sturdy handle, often made of wood or fiberglass, and a metal head, which
can be flat, rounded, or pointed. This versatile tool is widely used for driving nails, breaking
objects, shaping metals, and a range of other tasks in construction, woodworking, and
metalworking. Its enduring design and simplicity have made it an essential tool in countless
trades and DIY projects.
There are different ways in which traditional hammers can potentially cause damage to users and
object.

1. Vibration-Induced Injury: The vibrations generated by striking hard surfaces can lead to Hand-
Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS), causing pain, numbness, and reduced dexterity in the hands
and arms.
2. Strain and Muscle Fatigue: Repetitive hammering can lead to muscle strain and fatigue in the
hand, wrist, and arm, resulting in discomfort and reduced productivity.
3. Joint Stress: Frequent use of hammers can put stress on joints, potentially leading to
conditions like tendonitis or arthritis in the affected areas.
4. Accidental Injuries: Mishandling or misaiming a hammer can lead to accidental injuries,
including bruising, cuts, or more severe wounds.
5. Hearing Damage: The loud impact noise produced by hammering can damage the user's
hearing over time if proper hearing protection is not used, causing hearing loss.
6. Force: Hammers are designed to exert a significant amount of force on impact. The force
applied depends on the weight and velocity of the hammerhead when it strikes the object.
7. Material Hardness: The material the hammer is striking determines how much damage it can
cause. Softer materials are more prone to damage than harder ones.
8. Impact Area: The smaller the area of impact, the more concentrated the force, increasing the
potential for damage. A small, pointed hammerhead, for example, can cause more damage than a
large, flat one.
9. Repetition: Repeated strikes in the same area can compound damage over time. This is often
seen in tasks like chiseling or breaking apart materials.
10. Material Strength: The strength of the material being struck matters. Some materials are more
resilient and can withstand hammer blows better than others.
Design objectives
The following design objectives can be used to make the hammer more sustainable.
Dematerialization(4/5) - Dematerializing a hammer by incorporating lightweight materials
like aluminum and fiberglass in the handle, along with a polyurethane-coated face, offers
benefits such as reduced weight for easier handling, vibration dampening for user comfort,
enhanced durability, improved ergonomics, and versatility for various tasks. This modernized
design aims to make hammers more efficient and user-friendly, addressing some of the
limitations of traditional, heavier tools.
cost-efficient(2/5) - Creating a cost-efficient hammer means making it both affordable and
durable. To do this, we can use materials like aluminum, polyurethane, and rigid fiber glass,
which are less expensive than iron but still strong. By using efficient manufacturing methods
and making a lot of hammers at once, we can keep costs down. This way, people can get a
reliable hammer without it being too expensive.
eco-friendly(3/5) - An eco-friendly hammer made primarily from materials like aluminum
and without the use of wood is a sustainable choice. By eliminating wood, which often
involves cutting down trees, you reduce deforestation and its environmental impact. Instead,
focusing on materials like aluminum, known for being recyclable and durable, ensures a
more environmentally responsible hammer design. Furthermore, if the hammer incorporates
replaceable components, it promotes sustainability by allowing users to extend the tool's
lifespan and reduce waste without relying on wood in its construction. This approach
prioritizes both resource conservation and reduced environmental impact.
User safety(1/5) - Prioritizing user safety and efficiency in hammer design involves
incorporating several key features. A good grip ensures that users can hold the tool securely,
reducing the risk of accidents. Adjustable components allow for customization, making the
hammer suitable for various tasks and user preferences. Shock resistance, often achieved
with polyurethane coatings, protects users from excessive vibrations and potential injury.
Additionally, an adjustable weight system enhances efficiency, enabling users to adapt the
hammer's force to different materials and tasks, ultimately making it a versatile and user-
friendly tool that balances safety and effectiveness.
MIND MAP
ROUGH SKETCH:

FIGURE 1: Rough sketch design for a sustainable modern hammer.

FIGURE 2: Mind map showing the design objectives for a new design of modern hammer.
Figure 1 illustrates the key design objectives for my innovative hammer model. This hammer is
engineered with a primary focus on shock resistance to ensure durability and longevity. It's
designed to be user-friendly, accommodating a wide range of tasks, and boasts portability for
easy transport. The replaceable components make maintenance hassle-free, extending its
lifespan. Furthermore, environmental consciousness is at the forefront, with an emphasis on
being eco-friendly in its materials and production processes. This multi-faceted approach ensures
that the hammer not only excels in performance but also aligns with sustainability goals.

CONCEPT SKETCHES
There are five parts:
1.Portable Weight: The portable weight is a distinctive feature of this hammer design. It adds
versatility by allowing users to adjust the hammer's weight to suit different tasks. Whether you
need a lighter touch or extra force, the portable weight adapts the hammer to your specific needs.

2. Detachable Claw and Peen: The detachable claw and peen offer exceptional versatility. You
can easily switch between these two attachments based on your project requirements. The claw
excels at nail removal and prying, while the peen is perfect for precise striking.

3. Upper Handle: The upper handle of this hammer is designed for maximum comfort and
control. Its ergonomic design ensures a secure grip, reducing strain during prolonged use. This
handle enhances accuracy and minimizes the risk of mishits.

4. Lower Handle with Screwdriver: Combining a lower handle with a built-in screwdriver adds
an extra layer of functionality to your hammer. This innovative feature means you have a handy
tool for driving and removing screws right at your fingertips, streamlining your work.

5. Claw: The claw, in addition to being detachable, offers exceptional utility for tasks that
require leverage. Its design allows for efficient nail pulling and prying, making it an
indispensable part of your multifunctional hammer
