Prototyping Fundamentals – 22EC006

TASK-1.1
Objective: As part of our on going commitment to fostering excellence in engineering design, we are
seeking submissions from students that demonstrate a deep understanding of the design process stages,
engineering design fundamentals, and the application of tools such as the PUGH chart, black-box
representation, and glass box representation. This project statement outlines the key componentsand
expectations for the submission.

Submission Title: TranscribeSense (Integrated Communication Wearable)

Problem Statement Identification: Deaf individuals often confront significant hurdles in

understanding verbal communication, particularly in scenarios where sign language interpreters
or visual cues are unavailable. This communication barrier leads to feelings of isolation and
frustration, impeding their ability to fully participate in social interactions, educational settings,
and professional environments. Additionally, the sheer volume of text-based information
prevalent in today's digital landscape poses a daunting challenge. Sifting through large amounts
of textual data to extract relevant information is time-consuming and arduous, hindering
productivity and knowledge acquisition. These communication and information retrieval
challenges underscore the urgent need for innovative solutions to promote inclusivity and
accessibility for individuals with hearing impairments.

Proposed Solution: TranscribeSense, our proposed integrated communication wearable, operates

seamlessly to bridge the communication gap for individuals facing hearing impairments or language
barriers. The device functions by utilizing state-of-the-art speech recognition technology to instantly
transcribe spoken language into text, displayed in real-time on an integrated screen. This text-based
communication interface empowers users to comprehend and actively participate in conversations,
meetings, and various social interactions with ease and confidence.

In addition to its transcription capabilities, TranscribeSense features an intelligent alert system designed
to notify users of important environmental sounds or alarms. Leveraging advanced sensors and pattern
recognition algorithms, the device can detect and interpret various auditory cues, including doorbells, fire
alarms, and emergency announcements. Upon detection, TranscribeSense provides visual alerts and
contextual information on its display and vibrator, ensuring users remain informed and responsive to their
surroundings.

Need statement into problem statement :

Need Statement: There is a lack of effective communication solutions for individuals with hearing
impairments or language barriers, leading to difficulties in understanding and participating in
conversations and social interactions.

Problem Statement: The problem at hand is the inadequacy of communication accessibility for individuals
facing hearing impairments or language barriers, resulting in their exclusion from meaningful interactions
and social engagement. Existing communication methods fail to provide real-time access to spoken
conversations, leaving these individuals at a disadvantage and hindering their ability to comprehend and
contribute effectively. As a consequence, there is a pressing need for a comprehensive communication
solution that addresses the unique challenges faced by this demographic, enabling them to participate
fully in various aspects of life and fostering inclusivity within our communities.
