1. (a) Explain what is meant by the term ‘mapping’. [02]
(b) If f: x → 2x − 1, has the range{−5, −3, −1, 1}, find the domain [05]
(c) If f(x) = px + 2, find the value of p, given that f(3) = -4 [03]
2. Astridah is three times as old as Emelia and the sum of their ages is 36. If Emelia’s age is x,
formulate an equation in x and hence find Emelia’s age in each of the following situations:
a) At present [02]
b) Five years later [02]
c) Two years ago [02]
3. A mother spider can walk at a certain speed and run at another speed. If she walks for 10
seconds and runs for 9 seconds, she travels 85m. If she walks for 30 seconds and runs for 2
seconds, she travels 130m. Find her speeds for walking and running. [10]
4. A truck carrying some goats and chickens was involved in an accident. The owner of the
livestock had insured them. The police report presented showed a total of 120 heads and 330
legs. The insurance company then requested you as a teacher to help determine how many
chickens and pigs were on the truck so as to effect compensation.
(a) Explain how you would go about formulating a mathematical model to solve the
problem. [02]
(b) Formulate a mathematical model and use it to find the number of chickens and goats which
were on the truck. [08]
5. (a) Explain how you can introduce a lesson on ‘Linear inequations in one variable’ [04]
(b) A woman wishes to plant beans in a plot of land 220cm2. In order to receive a government
loan, she must put at least 400 plants into the plot. To grow successfully, beans need at
least 0.4m2 of land each and cabbage needs at least 0.7 m2. Taking b to represent the
number of bean plants and c to represent the number of cabbage plants, write down four
inequalities which satisfy these conditions. [10]
