Assignment 2 Due Date: 31st Oct 2021

Question 1
A gas stream is contaminated with SO2 (300 kg air, 63 kg SO2). The concentration of
SO2 must be reduced before the gas can be released to the atmosphere. To remove SO2,
the gas is contacted with water at 0oC and 21,000 mmHg (27.6 atm), the streams are
equilibrated, then the gas and water streams area separated. If 95% of the SO2 in the
gas must be removed, how much water is required? You may assume that the air is
completely insoluble in water, and that the water is nonvolatile.

Contaminated gas, MF Cleaned gas, MG

(air, SO2) (Air, SO2)

Absorption
equilibrium stage
Freshwater, MS Contaminated water, ML
(H2O, SO2)

Question 2
A 350m3 retention pond that holds rain water from a shopping mall is empty at the
beginning of a rain storm. The flow rate out of the retention pond must be restricted to
320L/min to prevent downstream flooding from a 6 hour storm. What is the maximum
flow rate (in L/min) into the pond from a 6 hour storm that will not flood it?

Question 3
The decay of chlorine in a distribution system follows a first order decay with a rate
constant of 0.360 d-1. If the concentration of chlorine in a well-mixed water storage tank
is 1.00 mg/L at time zero, what will the concentration be one day later. Assume no water
flows out of the tank.

Question 4
A reactor is used to treat an industrial waste, using a reaction which destroys the waste
!"
according to first-order kinetics: !#
= −kC, where k = 0.216 day-1. The reactor volume

is 500 m3, the volumetric flow rate of the single inlet and exit is 50 m3/day, and the inlet
waste concentration is 100 mg/L. What is the outlet concentration?

Question 5
A metal plating waste contains 20 mg/L Cu2+ and it is desired to add Ca(OH)2 to
precipitate all but 0.5 mg/L of the copper. To what concentration in moles per liter
must the hydroxide concentration be raised to accomplish this?

Question 6
A water contains 50 mg CO32- /L and 100 mg HCO3- /L at a pH of 8 (T = 25oC).
Calculate the exact alkalinity (in milligrams per liter as CaCO3).
