Introduction
I was born in the southwest of Japan and grew up very close to
a beach. When I was young, my father used to take me and my
brother to swim almost every day after work. We would sit by the
front door, dressed in our swimming costumes, with float rings
around our waists, and wait for my father to return. He would pop
us both on his bicycle and off we would go to the warm sunny
beach. In the spring and the autumn, we often went fishing. In
winter, we enjoyed walks and sometimes we flew kites. The ocean
is a part of me, and I have so many happy memories of it.
Whether or not you have a personal connection to the ocean,
it is hard not to be impressed by the variety of life it supports; the
incredible range of fish, crustaceans and mammals in all colours,
shapes and sizes – from tiny tropical fish in every colour of the
rainbow, and deep ocean fish that use lights to trap their prey, to
enormous blue whales and intelligent, fun-loving dolphins. So now
you can bring a little bit of that underwater world into your home!
The projects in this book are perfect for using up that bright
blue, yellow and orange stash you’ve got tucked away. And it
doesn’t really matter what type of stash it is, either. If you do not
fancy a woolly thought on a warm summer day, you can make
them with cotton yarn. The yarn weight and needle size hardly
matter: this is free knitting with a free spirit. I completely ignored a

sense of scale within the patterns. Some fish are much too big in
relation to others, and some have features accentuated for unique

and comical looks. But this is what makes them fun and lovable!
I had so much fun designing these items. Many of the sea
creatures seem to have their own character, and they certainly
make me smile. I am sure yours will do the same.

Good luck and happy knitting!

Materials and tools
Yarn
Most of the items in this book are knitted with DK (8-ply) yarn and 4-ply (fingering)
yarn. You don’t need a lot of yarn to create each project. Some require less than
5g (1/6oz), which is equivalent to a skein of tapestry wool. You may already have
oddments of yarn left over from previous projects and these projects are perfect to
use up your stash. You can also enjoy variations in the finished size by changing the
yarn weight and needle size. For many of the projects, I knitted smaller ‘baby’
versions of the projects, using the same pattern but swapping the DK (8-ply) yarn
for 4-ply (fingering) yarn, and using a pair of 2.25mm (UK 13, US 1) or 2.5mm
(UK 12, US 1/2) needles. If you want to make a matching set, but do not have the
same colour 4-ply (fingering) yarn, you can take one or two strands out from your
DK (8-ply) yarn to make the yarn finer.
I have mainly used 100 per cent wool yarns in the projects, as I love the feel of wool
and the colour tones it can create; I also find wool is the easiest when you want to
make your stitches neat and even. If you are making these projects for children to play
with, you might wish to choose natural materials. Feel free to experiment with alpaca,
mohair, cotton or synthetic yarns for different textures. If you need only very small
quantities of certain colours, tapestry yarn may be a good choice.

Stuffing
I usually use washed wool fleece to stuff my knitted items, as it is inexpensive. I have
found that it is ideal for stuffing toys as it is natural, has plenty of bounce, and fills any
shape well. If you cannot get hold of wool fleece, you can use polyester toy filling,
which is readily available from craft shops, or even cotton wool.

Other materials
The majority of the projects require no other materials, but you will need some
lightweight cardboard when making the fisherman’s boat (see pages 76–85).

Needles
Double-pointed needles
I used a pair of 2.75mm (UK 12, US 2) double-pointed needles for all
the projects in the book, both when knitting with DK (8-ply) yarn and
4-ply (fingering) yarn. However, if you want to make smaller versions of
the fish and mammals as indicated in some of the patterns, use a pair
of 2.25mm (UK 13, US 1) or 2.5mm (UK 12, US 1) double-pointed
needles and 4-ply (fingering) yarn.
I use double-pointed needles for two reasons. Firstly, because some
of the patterns require i-cords (see page 21), but secondly because
for stripy items I do not break and re-join the yarn at the end of each
row. Instead, I slide the work to the other end of the needle and use
the yarn end left from the previous time the colour was used. This
way, I don’t end up with lots of yarn ends, and the edges are neater
and easier to sew.
All the items are knitted flat and sewn up at the end so that you do
not need to knit in rounds. Most projects are knitted in stocking stitch
(US stockinette stitch) and the knit side is the right side unless otherwise
instructed. Your knitting tension needs to be fairly tight, so that when
the projects are sewn up, the stuffing is not visible through the stitches.
If you struggle with knitting DK (8-ply) yarn on fine needles, experiment
with larger needles. Some knitters knit more tightly than others and the
tension will also differ depending on the yarn you use. I have given a
general tension as a guide on page 14, but tensions are not specified

B
for any of the projects in this book, as the size of the finished projects
doesn’t really matter.

Crochet hook, size 3mm (UK 11, US C/2 or D/3) or similar

I have used some simple crochet to make fins on some of the fish.
The stitches are explained on pages 25–27. The technique is basic,
and you do not need to be proficient in crochet to achieve them.

A needle to sew work together

Your items will be sewn up using the same yarn that you knitted
them with – ideally the yarn ends. It is a good idea to make a habit
of leaving fairly long ends when you both cast on and fasten off. Use

g
mattress stitch with the right sides facing out. I recommend that you
use a chenille or tapestry needle with a sharp point, as it will be easier
to work through your tightly knitted pieces than a blunt-ended needle.
You can also use the same needle for embroidering.

Other tools
Wooden chopsticks
A simple but incredibly effective tool, a chopstick is by far the
best instrument for pushing stuffing into your toys. If you don’t
have any, you could use a large knitting needle or a pencil.

Scissors
Essential for trimming yarn ends when sewing up.

I have used a few simple crochet stitches: making chains, slip stitch,

are given on pages 25–27.

Creating character
For fish such as the anglerfish (see pages 30–31) and the
pelican eel (see pages 32–33), you will see that the outer
mouth piece is bigger than the inner mouth piece, and that the
top and bottom jaws are not exactly the same size. I designed
