MIXED CONDITIONALS, UNREAL PAST, WISHES

We are not going to discuss here the basic information on conditional sentences. If you need a thorough
revision of these aspects, please refer to the titles provided in the References section.

A mixed conditional sentence makes use of one type of the if-clause and a different type of the main
clause. This happens when the time in the if-clause is not the same as the time in the result (the main)
clause).

If-clause Main clause

Type 2 If she knew the truth, she would have told me. Type3
Type 3 If she had taken her chances, she would be a head of the Type 2
department now.
Type 2 If he missed the plane, he will be late for the conference Type 1
opening.

Ex. 1Write the correct conditional for the following sentences.

1 He hasn’t got much free time. That’s why he didn’t reply to our enquiry.
