Tutorial No. 1 – Magnetism

1) A magnetic core is built in the form of circular


ring having a mean radius of 𝑟𝑟 = 10 𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐. A coil
containing 𝑁𝑁 = 150 𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡 is wound uniformly
throughout the length of the core. The coil is
connected to a voltage supply and it draws a
current of 15A.

a) Determine the mmf of the coil


b) Calculate the magnetic field intensity in the
core.

2) The circular ring of question 1 has a mean cross-sectional area of 25cm2. The relative
permeability of the material of the ring is 1500. Calculate

a) The magnetic flux density in the core [Ans: 6.752 Wb/m2]


b) The magnetic flux in the core [Ans: 16.88 mWb]
c) The flux linkage of the coil [Ans: 2.532 Wb-t]
d) The reluctance of the core [Ans: 1.33 ×105A-t/Wb]

3) A piece of bar magnet has a cross-sectional area of 50mm2 and its has a magnetic
flux of 5×10-4 Wb

a) Determine the magnetic flux density of the bar magnet


b) Given that the magnetic field intensity of the bar magnet is 159,200 A-T/m, find
the relative permeability of the bar magnet and proposed the type of materials it
is made of.

4) Given that cast iron with relative permeability, µr = 90 is used to make a
electromagnetic rod. There are a total of N=10 turns winding around the rod with a
current of I= 100mA. Determine
(a) the magnetic field flux density if the magnetic field intensity H = 10×103A-T/m.
(b) the length of the rod
(c )the reluctance of the electromagnetic rod if the magnetic flux is φ= 7 ×10-4 Wb.

5) A magnetic circuit in Fig 2 has the following dimension: cross-sectional area of


AC =50 cm2 and N =1000 turns, 𝑔𝑔 = 0 𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐 . The relative permeability of the core which
is made of machine steel of µr = 450. For the magnetic flux density of 0.5 T in the
core, determine;
(a) The flux, φ
(b) The total flux linkage, λ=𝑁𝑁φ
(c) The required current through the coil
(d) Sketch and label the magnetic equivalent circuit.

6) If g = 0.1cm by inserting an air gap between the two legs while the machine steel core
length and the magnetomotive force, mmf which through the circuit remains
unchanged in Fig 2, determine the

(b) The magnetic flux which flows through the magnetic circuit
