don’t know what it is but we have been really fortunate that
we have been here for over three decades. All of us actually
came at that point of time in the ’90s. Ajay (Devgn), Akki

been there. Now Sunny’s film is a big hit… I believe I’ve been
lucky that I’ve survived all these years in the industry.”
That said, he claims he is no fan of the superstar tag and has
never felt like one. “I have never felt like a superstar ever. My
habits are not that of a superstar. The way I travel, the way I
dress, there is nothing I do that speaks superstar. My mind
is not tuned that way. Nothing about me is super starry.
Nothing at all. It is all bulls**t. I have never felt it… I just want
to give my best.”
Success, he believes, also depends on the right film choices
and how interested one is. He gives credit to the film itself
that helps create a bond, “where it’s an outing and bonding
with friends and family. You create a bond, feel good that
you are going out instead of sitting at home in a bad mood,
watching a bad print.”

The ‘Human’ Effect
• A successful entrepreneur and philanthropist, Salman Khan founded Being Human – The
Salman Khan Foundation in 2007, to provide education and healthcare services to the
underprivileged classes in India. He is also the owner of Being Human branded merchandise
which primarily funds his Being Human Foundation.
• A glance at some of the projects supported by Being Human…
• Akshara High School - The Foundation has been funding the education of 200 children at
Akshara High School, Kandivali, Mumbai, a not-for-profit neighbourhood school, since June
2012.
• Aseema – Associated with Aseema since 2011, the Foundation supports around 300 neglected
children at Aseema to receive holistic and relevant education.
• Tubelight Project - Started to empower youth with disabilities, Being Human’s Tubelight Project
is a joint initiative between the Foundation, TRRAIN and Rann Neeti Strategic Consultants.
Under this project, various skill training centres in Karnataka, Maharashtra and Delhi have
been set up. The aim is to train differently-abled youth to gain employment in the retail sector.
• Being Bajrangi Project - The aim of the project is to identify lost children in Mumbai and
reconnect them with their families. The team works with child welfare NGOs and helps them
in tracking the missing children. A total of 51 children have apparently been reunited with
their families and are now enrolled in schools and other projects in their hometowns.
• The Foundation also runs educational resource centres in Maharashtra, the Maharashtra
Prabodhan Seva Mandal’s arithmetic project and computer programme, and the English
learning and digital language programme.

With processed and fast foods finding a special spot during the holiday season, the risk of consuming
calorie-laden food is high. More countries are experiencing the double burden of malnutrition,
where undernutrition co-exists with obesity and other diet-related, non-communicable diseases.
Building bone mass mostly happens during childhood and adolescence. Low calcium intake has been
linked to low bone mineral density, which increases the risk of osteoporosis and broken bones in
the future. Vitamin D also plays a critical role in regulating the balance between calcium metabolism
and bone formation in the human body. The pandemic reminded us, if nothing else, of the power
and potential of good childhood nutrition to build human capital potential, improve immunity and
prevent infection and illness. A life cycle approach to nutrition needs to be implemented that can
play a role in improving nutritional levels in every household – focusing on children.
Making physical activity a part of the daily routine is not only fun but also healthy. It is only when
children engage in enough physical activity that they will be able to assimilate essential nutrients
that they consume. To help children grow and develop optimally they need adequate nutrition,
they need to be healthy, and they must feel safe and secure. Let us all contribute to a child’s healthy
growth and to a happy childhood experience that will allow them to develop to their full potential.

Vitality: A Lifelong Journey To Metabolic Health

Dr Rakesh Kumar Sahay, Senior Consultant Endocrinologist; MD; DM; FACE; FICP; FAMS;

Are you classified as metabolically healthy? If not, what areas do you need to focus on?
Maintaining metabolic health is a crucial aspect of overall well-being that spans across every
stage of life. A proper functioning of metabolic health prevents you from health concerns like
high blood pressure, obesity, fatty liver, kidney issues, cholesterol etc. Body Mass Index (BMI)
used to be one of the key factors in determining metabolic health. A waist circumference of less
than half your height is another indicator of metabolic health.
Metabolic disorders can emerge at various stages of life due to a combination of genetic, maternal
nutrition, environmental, and lifestyle factors. Childhood obesity, often driven by unhealthy
diets, is a prominent cause of metabolic issues. As individuals transition into adulthood, factors
like poor lifestyle choices, limited physical activity, and increased stress can contribute to the
development of conditions like Type 2 diabetes and obesity. Aging itself can also lead to changes
in metabolism, making older adults more susceptible to metabolic disorders.
Metabolic health is a lifelong journey that requires continuous attention. With the increasing
prevalence, individuals must take an active role in nurturing their metabolic well-being
through healthy nutrition, regular exercise, stress management, and adequate sleep. By
doing so, we can fuel vitality and reduce the risk of chronic conditions, ultimately enjoying a
healthier, more vibrant life from infancy through the senior years.

Mind Matters: Nurturing Mental Health In Adulthood
Dr Rahul Baviskar, MD (Medicine); DM (Neurology); Neurocare Clinic and CNS
Hospital, Nashik.
1 in 5 adults experience at least one mental health condition every year.
It influences not only our emotional state but also our physical health,
relationships, and productivity. Unaddressed mental health issues
can contribute to physical ailments like heart disease, obesity, and a
weakened immune system.
The demands of modern life, like work and societal pressure, can
take a toll on one’s mental well-being. A lack of good-quality sleep can
exacerbate mental health issues and reduce one’s ability to manage
stress. Many seniors also suffer from sleep and behavioural disorders,
cognitive deterioration or confusion states. Loneliness and social
isolation are key risk factors for mental health conditions in later life.
Mental health promotion and prevention strategies for older adults
focus on supporting healthy ageing. Meaningful social activities can
significantly improve positive mental health, life satisfaction and
quality of life; they can also reduce depressive symptoms. For instance,
befriending initiatives, community and support groups, social skills
training, creative arts groups, leisure and education services and
volunteering programmes.
Mental health is important at every stage of life. Recognising the signs
and seeing a healthcare provider are the first steps to getting treatment.
Through a balanced diet, regular physical activity, quality sleep, and
effective stress management techniques, adults can improve their
mental well-being and reduce the risk of mental health issues.

Keeping Your Mind Healthy

Dr Sanjay Kumar Choudhary, Senior Consultant Neurologist, Institute of Brain and
Spine, IBS Hospital, New Delhi; Engaged in Neurological Private Practice in Tertiary Care
Hospitals for the last 25 years.

An unhealthy lifestyle can be associated with poor mental health.

Stress, sleep disturbances, anxiety, mild cognitive impairment, as well as
neuropsychiatric disorders all significantly affect the quality of life of an
increasing number of people. Diet and nutrition are critical not only for
normal body function and preventing or mitigating dysfunction, but also
have a significant effect on mood and mental well-being.
An emerging field called nutritional psychiatry emphasises how
diet and nutrition affect how people feel. The MIND diet is a dietary
recommendation to counteract neurodegenerative brain changes and
improve nervous system function. To improve your mood, one of the
best things you can do is eat a well-balanced variety of health-promoting
nutrients. The supplementation of micronutrients (e.g., vitamins and
minerals) and macronutrients (e.g., Omega 3) can provide several
benefits for overall mental health, when accompanied by a healthy
lifestyle. Supplementing EPA, DHA, magnesium, vitamin E, and folic
acid are vital to the preservation of normal brain function. Promotion
of healthy, nutritious diets, while decreasing the consumption of
highly processed and refined “junk” foods, may provide benefits even
beyond the well-known effects on physical health, including improved
psychological well-being.

Dilip Shanghvi: The

Man Behind Sun
Pharma’s Shine
Dilip Shanghvi, Founder and Managing Director
of India’s most valuable listed pharma outfit - Sun
Pharmaceutical Industries, is one of the ‘most
interesting and least understood business minds’.
By Nichola Marie

22 Society Achievers - November 2023

As a child, Dilip Shanghvi would watch his father, a wholesale
drug distributor, at work in his small, wholesale medicine
shop in the crowded Dawa Bazar market of Calcutta
(Kolkata). Reading the drug labels, the young boy would
wonder how they were made. Growing up, he decided he
would go one step further and make medicines himself. It
evidently mattered not that he was untrained in Science;
soon after graduating in 1982 from the University of Calcutta
with a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, he borrowed ₹10,000
from his pharmaceutical dealer father. He used the sum —
minuscule by most standards — to start Sun Pharmaceutical
Industries in 1983, becoming its Managing Director.

Growth Spurt
In the beginning, Sun marketed only a modest number
of psychiatric drugs. That changed by the early 1990s, as
the company set up its own research and manufacturing
facilities, while also adding cardiology and gastroenterology
product lines. Shanghvi took the company public in 1994.
Growing Sun through a series of rapid acquisitions, Sun

when it bought the Detroit-based Caraco Pharmaceutical

prominent Indian drug manufacturers, Tamilnadu

Shanghvi’s quiet, keen leadership, the company acquired

and 2012. In 2010, after a three-year takeover battle, it

By Nichola Marie

As a designer of repute with several years of experience,

what is your reading of the current fashion design scenario
in India?
The current fashion scenario in India is very interesting
because I feel like finally, India is going through a fashion
change, almost like turbulence, almost like a recognition,
that fashion exists in India in the truest sense of the word.
With Indian fashion designers being chosen, the scenario
is already changing. With the influx of international brands
coming into India, it’s like a cross combination, where Indian
designers are being recognised abroad and vice-versa.

How would you say your
eponymous label, Anamika
Khanna, achieves the
presentation of India’s rich
craft encapsulated in global
contours?
The day I started out, I was very
clear that I had fallen in love with
our Indian craft, heritage and
culture. There was nothing else
that inspired or motivated me,
or that I loved more. Having said
that, I was also very aware that
India is not just about costume,
it’s not just about being steeped
in cultural heritage. It was also no
less than any other international
space that existed. I felt that
Indian fashion needed that slight
push towards contemporisation,
or that international exposure.
For me, it was an endeavour to
take our cultural heritage, art
and craft and actually marry
that with the rest of the fashion
of the world. I couldn’t see any
reason why Indian fashion had
to be isolated, or why it wouldn’t
be part of world fashion. When
we had so much more to offer,
I always wondered why India
should be used only as a dipping
pot, as manufacturers for others,
or supplying the embroideries
and craft to others, and not have
our own thing. When I launched
my international label Ana Mika,
that was a realisation that we
had a lot but what we missed
out on was the editing of Indian
fashion or realising that craft
is not just everything - there’s
also pattern making, cut, and
silhouette. I also started taking
the courage to take existing

Can you shed more light on signature designs introduced by the brand,
such as the dhoti pant and the pickup skirt, as well as new trends in sari
draping that you introduced?
The whole idea of experimenting with Indian silhouettes actually started as an
experiment. The first thing that I really did was the sari. Mindful of the fact that
the six-yard drape was India’s most respected and revered piece of garment, I did
not want to mess with it. And yet I realised that a lot of the younger generation
had stopped wearing the sari in its form because it was kind of difficult to manage
throughout a workday. I wanted to introduce easier forms of making the sari and
yet turning it almost into evening wear and reviving it in my own way. I introduced
the concept of the trouser sari first. It was a very big risk I was taking because it
hadn’t been done before. I think it paid off. And what evolved eventually was a
dhoti sari, which actually today has become part of the Indian dress culture.
The dhoti pant came up from the same idea. I love the idea of it but I felt that it was
not just cumbersome, it was also uncomfortable to be in a dhoti, the way it was
draped and all of that. So I actually decided to take the dhoti, and make it more
luxurious, sharp, and flattering to the Indian woman’s body and not the man’s.
The other big thing that we started doing was introducing the cape in the Indian
fashion scenario, which has now become synonymous with Indian fashion and
with our label. I got inspired by the Russian czars wearing these capes over
their clothes and I was like, the Indian dupatta probably needs a revival and
why can’t I experiment with the cape? And once I started doing that, we opened
up a Pandora’s box! We started teaming up with various Indian and Western
silhouettes. Because of the freeform, the fluidity of it and the luxury of it, it became
something that everyone wanted to have.
We also introduced the pickup skirt, which was again, like a very Western thing to
do, but bringing its fluidity and the drape. Somehow it reminded me of the sari,
given the number of ways that we drape the Indian sari. I tried putting that with
an Indian kurta first. There was also the lungi skirt, inspired by the Indian form of
wearing the lungi, with the comfort of just being able to zip it up.
We continue to experiment, the saris have taken various forms and so has the
sharara, which we’ve introduced now, with suit jackets, with embroidered blazers.
This journey of experimentation continues.

Harking back to when you started out in 1998, it has been a series of
successive achievements for you, from showing your bridal collection in
Pakistan for Bridal Asia in 2003, to launching your international label Ana
Mika in 2004, followed by the grand finale at Lakme Fashion Week. What
were the factors, in your opinion, that helped you gain a firm standing and
fame in a relatively short span of time?
Success is a very relative term. And I do feel that we still have a very long way to
go. Yes, along the way you achieve milestones. But I don’t even know if I should
call it success. It’s just part of what we do. I also do feel that the one reason why
we have kept going from strength to strength, if I may say so, is the very fact that
for me, I live, breathe, eat, sleep and wake up fashion. I’ve worked on it incessantly
for the last 20-plus years nonstop without actually having taken a break. The
consistency really helps. Of course, you’ve got to have it in your genes, your
surroundings and all of that. Besides that, it requires constant study. It requires
constant experimentation and the ability to take risks, which I’ve been doing for a
while now. The most important thing for me that makes me stay here is the love
for it. Like I said, I’m born for this and I think I will also end with it.

“I introduced the concept of the trouser sari first.

Considering you also made a splash at your
most recent showing at India Couture Week
2023, you have also sustained beautifully.
What has been the secret?
Couture gives me the platform to push boundaries
as much as we can. Having spent so many years
studying, researching, trend forecasting, and being
seeped in fashion, it also gives you an instinct and a
gut. It’s that sense of what the country might need
and might be looking for; the next thing, and just
going with that gut of that next thing is when we
presented couture. It is born from the whole idea
of constantly wanting to reinvent, to experiment,
to take the next step. Couture for me was almost
like the shredding of everything that existed. The
whole collection came around like that: We were
letting go of what was there and making space for
what could be. There was the risk of it not getting
accepted but I went ahead anyway. It’s what
sustains us - to keep reinventing and keep pushing
boundaries.

What strides has the brand made that leave

you with a sense of pride and fulfillment today?
I don’t think I feel a sense of fulfillment, I feel like
we’ve just started. And it’s such a long way to cover
and to experiment, to discover more …yeah, this
feels like the start of the learning curve. And let’s
see where it pushes us. But at this moment, having
started the second brand, AK-OK, it seems like a
very interesting space that we’re discovering and
going into. Besides that, we’re also at this moment
going with the idea of introducing a lot of new
things in the main Anamika Khanna brand. The
sense of fulfillment might lie in the fact that we’re
not restricting Indian fashion to ‘Indian fashion’.
We are experimenting, keeping our silhouette
slightly Western, mixing things up so it becomes
much easier to accept.

You have also been the designer of choice for

some of the most stylish film stars on their
wedding day, from Sonam Kapoor, Richa
Chaddha and Kajal Agarwal to Athiya Shetty…
It comes from our sense of comfort, the
amalgamation of design aesthetics, the very
fact that I’m listening to their viewpoint as a
bride and they understand our aesthetics and
we work together. That’s the one reason why it
works for us. Whether it’s Sonam or Athiya, or
any of the other brides, I think an understanding
of aesthetics and being able to adapt, blend,
create, and not be just stuck into that one mould
creates results.

Any future goals?

Our whole idea is to be able to create a brand that
is remembered for its values, honesty, integrity
of design, use of craft, and the modernisation of
Indian fashion; and that’s my goal for the future.

Radhika Karle, trainer to Sonam Kapoor, Dia
Mirza, Nisa Godrej and more, is an expert in
the field of fitness and nutrition.
She gives Hannah Cardozo
insight into the transforming
power of Pilates.

The road to Pilates was far from easy, but fitness and
nutrition expert Radhika Karle was determined to live life
to the fullest. Over 15 years, she has garnered a niche for
herself in the vibrant Pilates scene of Mumbai, where she
shares the transformative power of mindful movement
with others at her studio ‘Radhika’s Balanced Body’. She
firmly believes that Pilates transcends age and gender,
and her expertise has attracted notable individuals such
as Sonam Kapoor, Anand Ahuja, Neelam Kothari Soni,
Dia Mirza, Neil Bhoopalam, and Nisa Godrej. Join us as
Radhika Karle sheds light on the beauty of Pilates.

How did you discover Pilates, and what led you

to make it the focus of your career?
In 2004, I was doing my Nutrition Fellowship in
Adolescent and Sports Medicine in the US. I
was going to sit in my chair and the resident
doctor accidentally pulled it out. I fell and
landed on my tailbone. I was a big runner
then, and due to my bruised tailbone, the
doctor recommended Pilates.
At my first class, I spent the majority of the
time gawking at the women who were in
their late 40s and 50s, moving effortlessly
with strength and flexibility. I was hooked
and promised myself that I would move
like that when I got to that age.
I am happy to say I can move like those
women now. Pilates has brought mobility,
balance, and strength to my body and it’s all
thanks to a small accident!

This is the first cookbook in India that a nutritionist has

Sonam Kapoor has been a long-standing

Working with Sonam has been the most
challenging and fulfilling. We’ve done nine
films over six years where she has played
a schoolgirl, a physiotherapist, a princess,

escapades to Hannah Cardozo.

56 Society Achievers - November 2023

Rohit Roy and Manasi Joshi
Roy have worked in the Indian
television and cinema space for
over 20 years. However, be it
long shoots or busy schedules,
they have always made travel a
priority. Along with their daughter
Kiara, they have travelled far and
wide and there is no end in sight
to their bucket list. As experienced
travellers, they gave us the inside
scoop on their voyages…

What are your top three travel

destinations?
Rohit: 1. Providence, Rhode
Island, since our daughter studies
there at Brown.
2. New York, because I love the
hustle and bustle.
3. Anywhere in the countryside
of Italy because it is peaceful and
quiet.
Manasi: 1. The US, because our
daughter studies there. Any
opportunity to go to Providence,
Rhode Island, I will be there.
2. The Maldives, that’s the most
relaxed holiday.
3. Goa, I just love Goa!

Any exciting activities that you

highly recommend at these
destinations?
Rohit: New York is the perfect
city for a tourist. There’s enough
to do in terms of museums, art
festivals, Broadway, fine dining,
and pub crawls. I love shopping
on the streets of New York. If
anybody is planning a trip to Italy,
I must tell you guys, do visit the

Which aspect of travelling do you find most appealing?

Rohit: Travelling in itself is appealing. Our holiday starts the
moment we are in the airport lounge. It is not about getting
to a destination, I think the holiday should begin when you
get together.
Manasi: Travelling exposes me to new worlds, cuisines,
cultures, and people. And that for me is great because I
believe travel expands your horizon like nothing else can do.

Which is your favourite travel destination in India?

Rohit: I can’t pick one favorite destination in India, because I
love every part of it, every corner is different. You get to see
so many different cultures, cuisines, and speak to people in
different dialects. I love that about our country.
Manasi: It is Goa for sure.

Could you share some hidden gems that may not be in

wife have brought into that place is lovely.

Mumbai. We’ve been going to it regularly over the years.

“Who participated in
the democratisation
of art? The Raja Ravi

Author and advocate
Ganesh V Shivaswamy
chats with Nichola Marie
about his latest work,
the second volume of
his book series ‘Raja Ravi
Varma: An Everlasting
Imprint’, which looks
at renowned artist Raja
Ravi Varma’s ‘Bombay’
(Mumbai, today)
connection.

“In Bengaluru, at that time,

there was no major museum.
The only access to art was the
prints being discarded from
homes being demolished. So, I
started collecting.”

62 Society Achievers - November 2023

How do you view Raja Ravi Varma’s relevance and
legacy in today’s world?
Interestingly, his legacy has undergone a resurgence.
As people have started understanding democratic
entitlement better, artists and legacies that have
remained elite, exclusive, and esoteric are losing their
societal relevance. To take a recent example, a petition
was filed before the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India
seeking a revocation of the certification granted to the
film ‘Adipurush’. In the petition, it was stated the ideal
representation of Ravana was that of Raja Ravi Varma.
Here is an instance of Varma’s work - as recently as 2023
- being treated as the sacrosanct depiction of a person
from a Hindu epic. While this is the public view, how do
I view his legacy? I view it as an outsider. Why? Simply
because it is the difference between the view of a player
and the vision of the spectator. The spectator always has
a better vantage. In the preface to the series as found in
Volume 1, the statement of purpose is extracted below:

“The 20 th century was particularly transformative with

the early part of the century standing in drastic contrast
to the latter part. Monarchies were the rule in the initial
decades and as the century proceeded, they gave way
to democratic governments in most parts of the world.
A larger number of spaces of religious worship and
sacred texts were made accessible to the general public.
The century also witnessed the effect of distributive
legislation with inequalities giving way to greater sources
of livelihood and opportunities for many. With power,
religion, health, wealth and education extending their
reach, it was natural that art would follow suit. While a
lot has been written on the effects of democratization on
power, religion and education, there isn’t as much known The reality is that democracy was unstoppable - rightly

The second volume of your
book series ‘Raja Ravi Varma:
An Everlasting Imprint’ looks at
the renowned artist’s Bombay
connection. What are some of the
intriguing facts that emerge?
It basically explores the trajectory of
the image in its journey from patron to
public largely through the agency of the
Ravi Varma Press. It also looks at how
the image was absorbed into the public
realm and the reaction(s) to it. There
are many intriguing facts which emerge
in the second volume. To cite a few: (a)
that the Ravi Varma Press was actually
never owned by Ravi Varma at any point
in time. We finally see who owned the
Press (b) the actual functioning of the
Press has never been really documented
hitherto (c) what eventually happened to
the Press (d) how the Press became not
only financially successful but also went
on to alter cultural notions – cinema, law,
advertising, sculpture, comic culture etc.

What transformative influence did

the Raja Ravi Varma Press exert
through its visual legacy?
Hugely transformative! If one were to
accept the view that culture and religion
in India have long been inextricably
intertwined, the alteration of notions of
religious imagery can largely be attributed
to the Ravi Varma Press. The Lakshmi
and Saraswati chromolithographs
were issued in September 1894. Today,
derivations of this stereotype are found
in even the humble auto rickshaw. The
democratic percolation of this image
(art) is unquestionable. The legislative
mandate to open temples for worship
started in the 1930s with the Temple
Entry Proclamation of the Maharaja of
Travancore. If you compare the two,
while law started the process in the
1930s, art started it in 1894 itself! This is
one instance – there are so many such
examples of such influence (as stated
earlier, cinema etc).

What makes this book a treasure for

Varma’s countless fans?
In addition to what is stated above,
It must also be said in all fairness that this was an organic process – I never one of the draws is surely to be the
