UNIT 1: Directed Writing
Proposed Syllabus
First Term
UNIT 1: Writing Skills/Techniques
is suggested to be the 1st unit in
each term. Teachers are suggested
to spend around 10 lessons on this
unit at the start of the term. This
will include variety of written
exercises.
UNIT 2: Directed Writing
 Letter (informal and formal)
 Report (official and newspaper)
UNIT 3: Comprehension:
Before introducing the fictional
and factual passages teacher must
spare 1 week to read variety of
texts in the class.
After the students have read and
are oriented with different types of
text materials, the teacher may
now start both factual (reading for
ideas) and fictional (reading for
meaning) passages in the class.
UNIT 4: Composition Writing:
 Descriptive
 Narrative
Students will be expected to apply
the concepts learnt in Unit 1 and 2
to compose variety of texts with
special effects and meanings by
using different language
techniques and devices.
Second Term
 Content are mostly the same as
term 1.
 Unit 2- The following directed
writings will be done:
 Letter (formal and informal)
 Report
 Email/Personal Statement
 Speech
 Note the allocation of weeks is
increased for units 2, 3 and 4.

UNIT 1: Writing Skills/Techniques
is suggested to be the 1st unit in

Rationale Time Allocation
Changes proposed in the second Term 1 = 14 weeks
term’s syllabus are:
1. Proposed changes are similar for Unit 1: 2 weeks
both terms; only the allocation of Unit 2: 4 weeks
the number of weeks is varied. Unit 3: 4 weeks
Unit 4: 4 weeks
2. No changes are suggested in the
units, only the order of the units
have been rearranged as per Term 2= 16 weeks
Scheme of Work provided by
CAIE, to ensure that the Unit 1: 2 weeks
sequence of learning of skills is Unit 2: 5 weeks
more coherent and cohesive to Unit 3: 5 weeks
enable students produce Unit 4: 5 weeks
optimum results.
3. In each term the 1st unit is
suggested to be ‘Writing skills
and techniques’. This will
reinforce and enhance the basic
concepts of grammar,
punctuation, sentence structure,
differentiation between formal
and informal vocabulary, to
create special tone or register.
Learning different kinds of
figurative language and its forms
can help students learn to create
special effect in their writings.
4. The rationale is thus to enable
students to understand the
concept of using variety of
language techniques such as
figurative language, difference
between formal and informal
vocabulary, literary devices,
variety of punctuation marks, to
produce variety of tones, register
and also to create effect in their
various kinds of writings.
5. Once the student knows how to
create variety of texts, he/she
will also be able to understand
different texts and decipher
meanings and their effects
created by the writer (based on
high order learning strategy).
