Felipe Guedes (Order #39526931)

This publication is intended for a mature audience. It includes scenes involving horror, body
horror, violence, adult themes, references to past incidences of sexual violence, murder,
crime, and sexual/adult themes. Reader discretion is advised.

The characters are members of the Cole Crime Syndicate, based out of Rio de Janeiro. While
horror-themed, this adventure is designed for use with the One-Shot RPG: Covert Red system,
which is available on DriveThruRPG (link below)

One-Shot RPG: Covert Red Rules

This adventure is inspired by “Rio”, one of my longest-running TTRPG campaigns, and the players
who were a part of it. A special thanks to Barry G for creating his character, the great Roberto
Quadros. Also, for giving me the idea for the Ladrão de Olhos. As for the rest of those who
brought Rio to life, stay tuned. I intend to publish more adventures featuring Kathryn Van Ryce
and her crew.

This adventure takes place in modern-day Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). The characters are a crew that
works for the Cole Crime Syndicate. Each player should select a background hook detailed in the
Reference Section (Page 32). Only the character who gets Sworn to Secrecy should see their
background. The purpose of these backgrounds is to create a more meaningful and immersive
gaming experience. A character sheet specific to this adventure is provided in the reference
section (Page 33).

The characters are criminal anti-heroes. Being a criminal in an adventure can be a lot of fun, but
things can get out of hand quickly. Have a discussion with your players before they make their
characters to ensure they understand you are not looking for heartless murderers. You are
looking for characters like you might see in a Fast & Furious movie. Also, criminal games are more
at risk of players turning on each other. Remind the players that their characters are a crew loyal
to each other and to Kathryn.

The Rio featured in this adventure is 100% fantasy. I don’t live there and have never visited
(although I’d love to). I picked Rio because it was a cool and exotic location.

We want to bring you adventures more frequently and of increasing quality. To do that, we need
your financial support. This is a PAY WHAT YOU WANT product, and we completely understand
if your financial situation means you can’t pay. We’ve been there. Y

ou can also show your appreciation by giving us a positive review on DriveThru RPG, telling your
friends about our publications, or by purchasing one of our other products. If you can pay, we’d
greatly appreciate it. Email at oneshotrpg.gm@gmail.com , if you have any questions or

CHARACTER INTRODUCTION
Rio de Janeiro, called Cidade Maravilhosa, the wonderful
city by Brazilians. A city that is even more marvelous during
Carnivale.

Tonight, the city is on fire, with the passion of millions of

people living life with no care for tomorrow. Only tonight
matters. A credo you understand.

Rio is your haven, but your life is not a peaceful one. As a

member of the Cole Crime Syndicate, you live on the edge,
straying ever closer to a fall.

Tonight you celebrate with those you call friends and your
employer, Tiberius Cole. But the woman you are loyal to is
his number two, Kathryn Van Ryce, South African by birth.
You don’t know their history, but you know Cole holds
something over her.

A year ago, Cole learned that one of your crew, Maria

Farias, was an informant for Interpol. He ordered her killed.
Reluctantly, Kathryn agreed. You still see the pain and
regret on her face, for Kathryn loved Carina.

But this is the life you’ve all chosen. A life where you are
constantly being tempted towards the edge.

PAGE 2

Felipe Guedes (Order #39526931)

As the characters pull up to Cole’s mansion, ask each to describe their character and the vehicle
they drive. They notice several armed guards patrolling the grounds and a sniper on the roof.
They are met at the door by their friend and Kathryn’s bodyguard, Roberto Quadros.

Roberto is loyal to Kathryn and the crew. While a man of few words,
he greets each character genuinely with a handshake, la bise (kiss
on two cheeks), hug, nod, or forearm clasp. Ask each player to
describe how Roberto would greet their character.

ROBERTO QUADROS
Kathryn is inside. It will lighten her heart to see you.

When Roberto greets the character with the Sworn to Secrecy

background, he lowers his voice, drawing them close.

ROBERTO QUADROS
It’s is good to see you, my (brother/sister”). Kathryn is
melancholy tonight. Do not let it bother you. It will pass. It
always does.

Of course, the character knows the reason for her sadness. It has
been a year since Maria was dealt with.

Inside, a hundred guests gather in the inner courtyard around the

pool. Cole doesn’t seem to notice their arrival, but Kathryn gives
each a smile, nod, or even a wink. To the character with whom she
shared a kiss, the stare is prolonged.

Also present are:

Detective Diego Ruiz: Ruiz is a police detective on Cole’s payroll.

Ruiz is the source of the information that Maria Farias was working
for Interpol.

Felix Batista: A long-time friend and political ally of Tiberius Cole.

The rumor is that Cole is bankrolling his run for the presidency.
Kathryn
Shalk Hertzog: One of the best smugglers in South America. They
say nothing moves in an out of Rio by ship without Hertzog getting
a cut. He is also the man who got Maria out of the country, for a
price, of course.

The characters can mingle or go directly to see Kathryn.

HERTZOG AND A HANDSHAKE: If they approach Shalk Hertzog,

he’s only interested in discussing business.

SHALK HERTZOG
Fuck carnival! We should be making money. I’ve got empty
containers waiting to be filled with some expensive fucking
wheels. A ship is leaving tomorrow night, and I’ll pay 20 points
on market value. Cole is too busy having people kiss his ass, so
mention it to Kathryn, will you? But I need the fucking cars by
dawn.

PAGE 3

Felipe Guedes (Order #39526931)

Hertzog waits to hear what the character has to say before excusing
himself.
SHALK HERTZOG
Now, if you excuse me, I’m off to shake hands with the next
president of Brazil. I think I’ll take a shit first, and I ain’t washing
my hands after.

KINGMAKER: Ruiz is sipping a rum and coke and toasts anyone

approaching.
DETECTIVE DIEGO RUIZ
Happy Carnivale! Two million people getting shit-faced. Glad I’m
not on duty. Did you meet our VIP yet (gesturing towards Batista)? I
guess Cole isn’t content with just having dirty cops on his payroll.
He wants to be a kingmaker. I was wondering if you knew of any
trouble brewing. I heard Gabriel Vargas didn’t pay his tribute this
week, and I also don’t see him here.

The character knows Cole receives regular tribute from other donos
(crime bosses). They haven’t heard of a missed payment, but
Robertomight knows something. If they ask Roberto later, he is
surprised they know.

ROBERTO QUADROS
I just found out. How do you know about Vargas?

If they mention Ruiz, Roberta shows his dislike of the detective. If the
character who is Sworn to Secrecy is involved in the conversation,
they know Roberto hates Ruiz because he’s the one who ratted out
Maria.

ROBERTO QUADROS
Of course, Ruiz would know. He might be useful, but he is also a
man willing to betray his duty for money. I won’t forget that.

Roberto explains what he knows about Vargas.

ROBERTO QUADROS
A courier was supposed to arrive today with the tribute. He didn’t.
Vargas was also invited to the party, and he’s a no-show. Cole isn’t
happy. That’s about all I know right now.

HAIL UNTO CEASER: The characters can’t approach Felix Batista

without first speaking with Tiberius Cole. Cole greets each of them
warmly but expects them to show deference.

TIBERIUS COLE
Welcome. Please let me introduce you to my friend Felix Batista.
Brazil has been good to us. For that, I will give them this great man
as their next president.

Batista is all handshakes and smiles. He speaks in platitudes.

FELIX BATISTA
It is a pleasure. I am humbled to be surrounded by so many great
friends and supporters. God willing, the future will bring great
opportunities for us all.

PAGE 4

Felipe Guedes (Order #39526931)

As Felix turns his attention to some other guests. Cole says a few final words to the characters.

TIBERIUS COLE
Fate lies not with god, my friends, but within ourselves. Remember that.

Cole turns to greet Shalk Hertzog as he arrives to shake the hand of the future president. If
Hertzog has already had a conversation with one of the characters, he gives them a wink.

THE REMEDY FOR MELANCHOLY IS GTA: Kathryn hugs each character as they join her.
Roberto is also present. If Vargas and the missing tribute are mentioned, Kathryn responds.

KATHRYN VAN RYCE

I brought it up with Tiberius, but he didn’t want to ruin the evening. I imagine we’ll be
taking a drive to see Vargas tomorrow. It’s probably nothing.

If someone mentions that Hertzog is looking for cars, Kathryn ponders it for a moment. If the
characters don’t’ mention it, Roberto does.

KATHRYN VAN RYCE

Carnivale was originally a feast meant to honor Dionysus, god of everything good, wine,
ecstasy, and even madness. Masks were introduced in the 1800s and were used to hide
your sins. Entirely unnecessary at this party, I suppose. Does anyone feel like sinning
tonight? I think some speed is precisely what I need right now. And I know exactly where
to get the cars. Tell Hetzog we’ll be at the docks in two hours.

Roberto pulls up to the front of the manor in an Infiniti QX80 (seats 8). About twenty minutes
later, they are in a secluded neighborhood on the city’s outskirts. Kathryn has Roberto drive
around the area a few times before stopping. She pulls out her smartphone and pulls up a
satellite view of the grounds. Hand out the PLAYER’S MAP (Page 28).

KATHRYN VAN RYCE

Okay, this is the estate of Estaquio Santos. I attended a Carnivale party here three years
ago. Everyone’s rich and drives an expensive car. There is a fence around the entire
perimeter, but it’s scalable. The gate controls are here, the vehicles are kept here, and the
keys are in a valet cupboard here. The party is out back around the pool. Santos relies
more on physical security than cameras. The guards could be a problem. They work for
Guarda De Dante (Date’s Guard) (in reference to Dante’s Gate). Basically, hired killers. So,
how do you want to do this?

Kathryn lets the characters come up with a plan. She’ll play whatever part they want her to play.
Roberto stays in the SUV in case they need an exit.

Katherine is hesitant to entertain plans that involve a

direct confrontation.

KATHRYN VAN RYCE

Just remember, we’re stealing cars, not lives. If
we’re not careful, we’ll end up in a firefight with
Guarda De Dante. I don’t want any harm to come
to guests. Let’s keep this professional.

Cole funds his people well, so the characters can

have any equipment they want (within reason).

Felipe Guedes (Order #39526931)

Below are some considerations when running this encounter.

• The security fence (with spikes) surrounds the entire property. It requires an Athletics roll to
climb (ODDS: -10%). A failed roll results in 1d10+10 damage.

• Since cars are coming and going, Gate A is open. Gate B is closed with a guard. Gate C is
closed and unguarded.

• There are 10 security guards. Each is armed with a Taurus G3 (Dmg: 1d6x10, Ammo: 17, 2
extra clips) and a radio. In addition, four guards are armed with AK-47 assault rifles (Dmg:
1d8x10, Ammo: 30, 1 extra clip).

• The guards have three Mercedes Benz A-Class pursuit cars (Health: 600). In the trunk of
each car are two AK-47 rifles. The tires have 60 Health. The penalty to the ODDS to shoot a
tire when the car is moving is -40%. The vehicles will give pursuit if they are able.

• The guards’ top priority is to protect the Santos family, followed by the guests. If gunfire
erupts, the party-goers retreat into the house. Two guards go with them.

• There is no guest list, so the guards don’t know who is supposed to be there and who isn’t.
They will be suspicious of any strange behavior or of anyone obviously out of place. While
the Guarda De Dante are known to be trigger happy, they are mindful of the trouble they’ll be
in if they accidentally kill one of Santos’s guests.

• The parking lot is full of expensive cars. Let the players pick any make and model of their
choice. While most modern cars are almost impossible to hotwire, this is a work of fiction.
Hotwiring requires a Rogue roll (ODDS: -10%) to unlock the door and a Technical roll
(ODDS: -20%) to start the car. A failed roll sets off the alarm. The keys are kept at the valet
station (see map).

PAGE 6

Felipe Guedes (Order #39526931)

Once the characters steal the cars, they need to race through the streets of Rio to the docks.
Roberto follows in the SUV. Over the radio, Kathryn sounds exuberant as she challenges
everyone to a race.

KATHRYN VAN RYCE

Let’s see what you got. The last one to the docks cleans Cole’s cars for a month.

If the characters are not being pursued by the guards from the mansion, other Guarda de
Dante cars pull out behind them. One for each character. They start 3 rounds behind. While the
character’s vehicles are faster, the tight streets of Rio neutralize their speed advantage.

Each round works as follows:

1. Roll 1d10 on the events table (see below)

2. Each driver rolls initiative (1d10). Whoever rolls the highest decides on the base difficulty
for all actions (including those taken by passengers) in the round. They can choose the
standard ODDS or apply a penalty to everyone of -10% to -50%. Run individual initiative
between each character and their pursuit car. The guards have a +0% Drive Feat.
3. Each driver makes a Drive roll based on the difficulty set by the initiative winner. Below is
what happens based on the outcome of those rolls.
• If both drivers succeed, the distance between the vehicles stays the same.
• If both drivers fail, the distance between the vehicles stays the same.
• If the guards succeed and the character fails, the distance between the cars
decreases by 1. If the distance is 1 or less, the guards can try a stunt to force the
character off the road. The guards make a Drive roll (Difficulty set by the initiative
winner). If successful, the character must make a defensive Drive roll to avoid the
crash (same ODDS). If they fail, their vehicle takes 2d10x10 damage.
• If the characters win and the guards fail, they extend the distance by 1. If the
distance is 6 or more, the character can make a Hiding roll to escape.

CAR CHASE EVENTS TABLE: Roll 1d10

1 Major Obstacle (e.g., another vehicle, semi-truck, bus, etc.). All cars need to
make an extra Drive roll (ODDS: -10) to avoid a collision causing 2d10x10
damage to the vehicle. Occupants must make a Dodge roll (ODDS: -20%) or
take 1d6 x 10 damage. As long as the vehicle has Health, the chas continues.

2-3 Minor Obstacle (e.g., motorcycle, pedestrians, bicycle, cart vendor, etc.). All
cars need to make an extra Drive roll to avoid a collision causing 1d10x10
damage to the vehicle. Occupants need to make a Dodge roll or take 1d4 x10
damage. As long as the vehicle has Health, the chase continues.

4-6 Gunfire: The guards open fire. The ODDS to hit is equal to those set by the
initiative winner. If the guards hit, they do damage to the vehicle. Also, roll the
L Skull Die (1d6) If the skull is rolled (L1), the attack hits the character. The
character can Dodge (ODDS: -20%).

7-9 No event or obstacle

10 One of the pursuit cars crashes spectacularly. Roll randomly to see which one.

PAGE 7

Felipe Guedes (Order #39526931)

When the group arrives at the docks, Hertzog is waiting with half a dozen armed guards. He’s
pissed if any of the cars are damaged.

SHALK HERTZOG
What the fuck? You might as well get back in and drive it right off the fucking pier, with
yourself in it. I’ll be telling Cole to dock your fucking allowance. Now fuck off.

Otherwise, he accepts the vehicles and is happy the group decided to make some money
instead of getting shit-faced.

While Hertzog inspects the cars, the characters notice two of his guards are standing with three
young women. They are dressed for a party but don’t look like they are in a party mood. If they
make an Investigation roll (ODDS: -10%), they get the impression the women are scared. If
they inquire with Hertzog, he becomes furious.

SHALK HERTZOG
Did I ask you where you got these fucking cars? They are just pissed we’re here instead
of partying. Now, mind your own fucking business! Keep your people in line, Kathryn!

Kathryn glares at Hertzog, her expression clearly pained.

KATHRYN VAN RYCE

Let’s go. These docks smell like an asshole. Good night Hertzog. I’ll expect payment
within 48 hours.

As they leave, Roberto stops to whisper something to Hertzog. Whatever he says, Hertzog
doesn’t like it. Once everyone is back in the SUV, Kathryn wants to celebrate.

KATHRYN VAN RYCE

Let’s party. We’ve earned it. Roberto, take us to the Névoa Roxa. All rounds are on me.

Ask the characters to describe the type of club their characters would hang out at. The club is
the crew’s regular haunts. Also, if anyone is injured, Kathryn arranges for a doctor to meet
them at the club who can heal 30 points.

PAGE 8

Felipe Guedes (Order #39526931)

Whatever the type of club, the group has their
own VIP section. The place is packed with
people enjoying Carnivale.

Kathryn starts things off with a round of shots.

She raises her glass, her eyes glistening
slightly.

KATHRYN VAN RYCE

The only thing of real value is the people
you are with. I know that now. To us!

The “I know that now” is clearly a reference to Maria. Kathryn speaks no more on the subject. She
needs to have fun and forget.

WHISPERED THREATS: If anyone asks Roberto what he said to Hertzog, they can make a
Persuasion or Charm roll unless they have the Sworn to Secrecy background.

ROBERTO QUADROS
I told him that if I learned those women were forced to do anything against their will, I’d be
back to pay him a visit. I’m sure he’ll complain to Cole, but that is a line I won’t cross. Not for
any price. Not for anyone.

SECOND KISS: Kathryn approaches the character she kissed and leads them onto the dance floor.
She whispers as she sways along with them.

KATHRYN VAN RYCE

I’m not sure I’m ready to fall in love again, but I can’t stop thinking about you.

She steps in closer, holding them and laying her head on their shoulder. If the character makes a
Charm roll, they share another kiss. If they fail the roll, Kathryn’s thoughts are still on Maria, and she
just wants to be held.

THE FORERUNNER: After a few hours of partying, the

characters can make an Observation roll to notice a woman
walking to the middle of the dance floor. She stands
perfectly still with her head lowered and hair obscuring her
face. The characters must make a Self-Control roll. If they
fail, they suddenly feel a burst of fear & anxiety.

Then, the woman screams, startling the party goers nearest

her. Surprisingly, her voice is loud enough to be heard over
the music.

CRAZED WOMAN
O diabo está entre vocês.
(The Devil is Amongst You).
I must take your eyes so you do not see his sin.

With an animalistic cry, she grabs a nearby dancer by the

head. Then, to everyone’s horror, she drives her thumbs
into his eyes, blood spurting out around them.

PAGE 9

Felipe Guedes (Order #39526931)

The crowd panics, and the characters momentarily lose sight of the woman. They need to make
Observation rolls to find her in all the confusion (ODDS: -10%).

If Kathryn and the character she kissed are dancing, the woman appears near them.

CRAZED WOMAN
I will take your eyes.

Screaming, she charges. Her speed takes the character off-guard, and the woman automatically
wins initiative. Her first action is tearing the gold cross and chain from around Kathryn’s neck. Then,
roll her second attack as normal. Kathryn is unarmed in this encounter.

WOMAN: Health: 100, Feats 70%, Actions: 2, Attacks: Strike: 25 damage. Threat -10%.

Her primary target is Kathryn. As she attacks, she keeps screaming, “O diabo está entre vocês”.

When the woman reaches 0 Health, she dies, even if the characters were just trying to subdue her.
Anyone making a Medical roll concludes her heart just stopped.

If anyone looks for the cross, they can’t find it.

After the encounter, Kathryn wants to leave before the police arrive. Roberto offers to take her home
and to stay the night. If any of the other characters also offer to stay, she declines. Instead, she wants
everyone to meet at Cole’s mansion tomorrow at noon.

When the characters arrive at Cole’s mansion the following day, Detective Ruiz is also present.

DETECTIVE DIEGO RUIZ

I hear Carnivale went off the rails last night. Unfortunately, not that unusual. I checked with
the detectives on the case. They suspect bath salts or some other synthetic drug. Do you
remember that incident in Florida where some guy started eating another guy’s face off?
Same shit. Anyway, the woman was from Campos. Probably in Rio to party for Carnivale.

Roberto places a hand on Kathryn’s should. She reaches up and gives his hand a squeeze.

ROBERTO QUADROS
She seemed incredibly strong for her size.

DETECTIVE DIEGO RUIZ

Yes, of course. When I was on the beat, it wasn’t unusual for it to take four cops to restrain
someone on a bad trip. It’s a combination of adrenaline and no fucking inhibitions.

Ruiz pulls it out of his pocket.

DETECTIVE DIEGO RUIZ

I recognized it. The chain is broken, but the cross is fine.

Kathryn hesitantly accepts the cross. After Ruiz leaves, give the characters a few minutes to talk
amongst themselves. Suddenly, Kathryn throws the cross onto the floor. Roberto moves to retrieve it.

KATHRYN VAN RYCE

I don’t want it. That woman touched it, and when I look at it,
all I can think of is a face with no eyes.

PAGE 10

Felipe Guedes (Order #39526931)

ROBERTO QUADROS
Kathryn, this was given to you by Mar…

KATHRYN VAN RYCE

I know who gave it to me. I don’t want it.

Roberto hands the cross to the character, who is Sworn to Secrecy for safekeeping.

Tiberius Cole arrives. While he is aware of the events last night, his primary concern is business.

TIBERIUS COLE
I spoke to Hertzog. Good job on getting those cars.
He’s already paid, so you can pick up your share
before you leave. However, there is another matter I
need taken care of. Gabriel Vargas has failed to send
his tribute. More importantly, he has insulted me by
not showing up at my gathering. I want you to drive
to his place in Campos and demand an explanation. I
will accept nothing less than four times the normal
tribute as an apology. I want this done today.

KATHRYN VAN RYCE

Of course, sir. We’ll leave within the hour.

Pleased, Cole gives her an embrace, then returns to his

study. Kathryn is now focused on the business at hand.
None of the characters have been to Vargas’s estate, so
she provides an overview.

KATHRYN VAN RYCE

Gabriel Vargas has always been difficult to deal with, but he’s never been late paying tribute. I
want to avoid violence, but we must be ready for anything. Vargas typically has about a dozen
guards at his compound. They won’t search us or take our weapons out of respect for Cole.
So, if they do, then that is the first sign of trouble.

ROBERTO QUADROS
What about the tigers?

KATHRYN VAN RYCE

Oh right. Gabriel owns two tigers. If you meet their stare, don’t turn your back on them. Just
keep staring into their eyes and back away. Go gather your things. We meet out front in 30
minutes.

The drive to Campos takes four hours. Vargas’s estate in a remote forested area near the city at the
end of a long private road.

If any of the characters make the connection that both Vargas and the woman from the club are from
Campos, give them a 20 point bonus to their Action Pool. If they mention this to Kathryn or Roberto,
they find it curious but shrug it off as a coincidence.

Kathryn is taking her own car, as is Roberto. The characters can drive with them or take their own
ride.

PAGE 11

Felipe Guedes (Order #39526931)

The gate to Vargas’s estate is open, and the wafts of smoke fill the sky above. Anyone making an
Observation roll notices the body of a guard lying near the gate. If they investigate, they discover his
eyes are missing.

Alarmed, Kathryn retrieves an MP5 from the trunk. She asks the character with the most military
experience to take the lead the way into the compound.

The mansion of Gabriel Vargas is gutted. Flames still rise from parts of the ruin. About a dozen
bodies litter the grounds. Each blood-covered face has gaping holes where the eyes should
be. Spent shell casings are scattered around the grounds, suggesting an intense firefight.
Sitting in the middle of the courtyard is a pile of money with eyeballs resting on top. It looks
like Cole’s tribute.

If the characters make an Observation roll (ODDS: -20%, they notice some of the bodies look like
they have been mauled or partially eaten.

KATHRYN VAN RYCE

Search the bodies to see if Vargas is amongst them. He has a tattoo of skulls
on the knuckles of his left hand.

The characters can make an Observation roll to find Vargas. He is still wearing gold and diamond
rings and chains worth thousands. They can also make a Medical roll to determine that most
people’s eyes were removed before death.

Suddenly, the character hears a low growl as a tiger appears. It stares intently at them with crazed
eyes. Its muzzle is covered in blood. Clearly, the beast is responsible for some of the injuries. There
is another growl as a second blood-stained tiger appears. With a simultaneous roar, the tigers
charge. They are rabid and fight fiercely and to the death. Roll initiative.

Everyone needs to make a Self-Control roll (ODDS: -10%). If they fail, they suffer a -20% penalty to
the ODDS for this encounter.

Once the tigers have been dealt with, a man staggers into view. Blood runs down his face from the
ruin of his eyes. He has a handgun.

PAGE 12

Felipe Guedes (Order #39526931)

EYELESS MAN
(Pointing) The Devil is Behind You. Cut out your eyes or lose your soul.

The man then raises the gun to his temple and pulls the trigger. Horrified, Kathryn backs away
toward the cars, almost tripping.

KATHRYN VAN RYCE

Fuck! Let’s get the hell out of here. This place is cursed.

As Roberto goes after her, he gives instructions to no one in particular.

ROBERTO QUADROS
Cole will still want his tribute. Grab the money. Leave the eyes.

If someone makes an Investigation roll, they realize the man was pointing in the direction of Rio.

On the drive back, the group passes a church. Kathryn suddenly pulls a U-turn and drives into the
parking lot. Without explanation, she gets out of the car and goes inside. Roberto gestures for the
group to follow.

Kathryn is sitting in one of the pews. Roberto sits beside her. After a few moments of silence, she
asks the group their thoughts.

KATHRYN VAN RYCE

What’s happening? I can’t shake the feeling that it’s about us. The eyes were left on top of
Cole’s tribute. Is someone trying to send us a message?

ROBERTO QUADROS
I am reminded of a story I heard as a young boy in the favelas. It is a legend of an Aztec woman
whose eyes were burned out by the conquistadores. They say she still walks the land weeping
tears of blood and crying out for vengeance. She is known as La Llorona or the weeping
woman, but in the favelas, we called her Ladrão de Olhos – the Thief of Eyes.

Kathryn listens to what everyone has to say. Before they leave, she asks for Cole’s tribute. Once she
has it, she dumps the money onto the alter, much to the priest’s surprise.

KATHRYN VAN RYCE

That money is cursed. Let’s get back to Rio. I’ll answer to Cole.

PAGE 13

Felipe Guedes (Order #39526931)

Back in Rio, the group meets with Tiberius and detective Ruiz. Kathryn has already explained in
detail what they found at Vargas’s estate.

TIBERIUS COLE
I know you are all rattled by what happened to Vargas and his men. This is nothing more than
someone knew moving into our territory. They are trying to scare us with brutality.

The Columbians know the power of these tactics. They created the Colombian necktie for just
this purpose. You cut a man’s throat and pull his tongue out through the wound. I have put
the word out. We will find those responsible. I want you to be vigilant, but we still have a
business to run and a reputation to maintain.

In the meantime, Herminio Lobo, who controls the Santa Catarina territory, has announced a
street race here in Rio to celebrate the end of Carnivale. He supposedly has a new driver he
claims can beat anyone. The buy-in is $300,000. Lobo is a man who annoys me to no end. I
want him humiliated, and I want his money. I’ll put up the $300,000 and the car. I expect you
to drive it (pointing at the character who has Driver background).

Cole provides the character who is racing with a Lexus LFA, which can do 0 to 60 in 3.6 seconds.
The race is tomorrow night at midnight, starting outside the club Delirio.

After the meeting with Tiberius, Kathryn tries to give the group some words of encouragement.

KATHRYN VAN RYCE

Cole is right. This is someone moving into our territory. Nothing more. All we can do is wait
until Cole’s people turn something up. In the meantime, it’s back to work. If you need me, just
call.

As she is talking, the characters can make an Observation roll to notice she repeatedly reaches up
to where the cross used to hang around her neck.

Depending on your time, the characters can undertake some RANDOM JOBS, which are available
on Page 34.

PAGE 14

Felipe Guedes (Order #39526931)

The pre-party race begins at the nightclub Delirio. The six competing cars are lined up in front of
the club. There are too many people for the club to accommodate, so the party has spilled out into
the street. The characters have the $300,000, which is dumped into the trunk of a BMW i8 parked
on the club dance floor. The total is $1.8 million. The winner gets the car and the money. Four
guards with uzis watch it at all times.

Herminio Lobo is living it up as the patron of ceremonies. He greets Kathryn and the characters
warmly. His energy is infectious.

HERMINO LOBO
I am so happy that Tiberius has decided to enter the race. He is too serious and too rich, so I
intend to cheer him up by taking his money. HA! HA! Let me introduce you to my driver. This
is Naito Yoshi. I saw her race in Tokyo and had to bring her to Brazil. I’m paying her more
than I stand to win, but I don’t care. I’m happy, and this is my night! HA! HA! Now please enjoy
yourselves! You are my guests.

Naito nods respectfully to the character who has the Driver background.

Before the race begins, Kathryn finds the Driver.

KATHRYN VAN RYCE

Forget about Cole. This the Carnivale Corrida Noturna. It’s your ticket to get out from
beneath his reign. It’s customary to give the drivers a good luck kiss. May I?

If the character agrees, Kathryn gives them a kiss that draws the envy of the crowd.

KATHRYN VAN RYCE

Win this.

Roberto gives the character a nod. The nightclub empties into the street. The anticipation is
palpable. Before the character who is driving gets into their car, they are approached by Naito
Yoshi. She smiles and gives them an even more impressive kiss than Kathryn. The crowd cheers
jubilantly.
NAITO YOSHI
I hear you are the one to beat, so that kiss will bring me luck.

PAGE 15

Felipe Guedes (Order #39526931)

The drivers rev their engines, waiting for the starting signal. So that the other players are not just
sitting around doing nothing, give each of them a driver to roll for. Each driver has a +20% Feat
bonus. Naito Yoshi has a +35%.

The race consists of six Drive rolls. Since this is the character’s race to lose, they can decide on any
penalties to the ODDS each round. Remember that due to their background, any penalty to the
character’s ODDS are +10% better than the other drivers. So, if the character decides to apply a -
20% penalty to the ODDS for a round, their penalty is only -10%. Additionally, Cole’s car is
equipped with one nitrous boost, giving them a +20% on a single roll.

Each successful roll gives the driver a point. The driver with the most points after six rolls wins the
race. If there is a tie going into the 6th roll, make it a competitive roll with whoever rolls the lowest
winning.

However, as the character rounds the corner and onto the home stretch, a woman steps out into
the street. As she is illuminated in their headlights, the character sees her clearly. It’s Maria Farias,
but her eyes are missing. The character needs to make a Self-Control roll (ODDS: -20%). If they fail,
they suffer a -50% penalty to the ODDS for the round.

If they fail their drive roll on the 6th round, they crash the car taking 1d4 x10 damage.

Maria

If the character wins the race, they are swarmed and lifted onto the shoulders of the crowd. They
are carried inside the nightclub where Herminio Lobo is waiting. Naito Yoshi approaches to give
them another kiss but steps back when she sees the look on their face.

HERMINO LOBO
You are a legend, my friend. The money and the car are yours!

If the character loses the race, it’s just Kathryn and the others surrounding them. She senses
something is wrong. Presumably, the character tells everyone what they saw. Kathryn is stunned.
Roberto shares a glance with the character Sworn to Secrecy.

KATHRYN VAN RYCE

I don’t understand. We were all watching the race. There was no one in the street. You
swerved around nothing.

Everyone, except the Driver, is in agreement that nothing was there.

PAGE 16

Felipe Guedes (Order #39526931)

AN INVITATION: As the characters are getting
ready to leave, Roberto approaches Kathryn.

ROBERTO QUADROS
Do you want me to stay with you again tonight?

KATHRYN VAN RYCE

No, that won’t be necessary.

Kathryn approaches the character with whom she

Shared a Kiss.

KATHRYN VAN RYCE

I want you to stay with me tonight.

If the character accepts, they can leave together, going to either Kathryn’s or the character’s place.
She doesn’t care which. When they get there, she wants to make love intensely. The lights are dim,
leaving most of the place in darkness. During their lovemaking, ask the character to make an
Observation roll. If they fail, they can roll again. When they succeed, they see a woman standing in
the doorway watching them. They need to make a Self-Control roll (ODDS: -20%) not to be startled.
They then realize it must have been a trick of the eyes as there is nothing there.

Later, they wake up to find Kathryn is not in the bed. They find her sitting in a chair in the living
room. Tears glisten on her cheeks.

KATHRYN VAN RYCE

I’m sorry. Tonight was amazing but it made me realize I miss being with someone. I miss
being with her.

Of course, Kathryn is speaking of Maria.

BATHTUB OF BLOOD: When the character who is Sworn to Secrecy gets home, they can make
an Observation roll. If they fail, ask them to make another one when they get in bed and another in
the middle of the night.

When they make the roll, they hear a dripping

sound from their bathroom. When they
investigate, they realize their bathtub is near
to overflowing with blood. There appears to
be a body in the tub, almost entirely
submerged.

As they get closer, the body suddenly rises to

the surface. It’s Maria, and she has no eyes.
She screams, her voice blowing out all the
lights. Alone in the dark, the character needs
to make a Self-Control roll (ODDS: -50%). If
they fail, they scream with her until they can’t
scream anymore.

Afterward, they realize the tub is empty, and

there is no evidence that what they saw was
real.

PAGE 17

Felipe Guedes (Order #39526931)

Then, the character’s phone rings. It’s Roberto.

ROBERTO QUADROS
We need to tell Kathryn the truth. Call everyone together at her place. I’ll meet you there in an
hour.

GOING FOR A RIDE: As the Drive driver leaves the nightclub, Naito Yoshi pulls up in her car.

NAITO YOSHI
Do you want to go for a ride?

Once inside. Naito hits the gas and brings the character on a thrilling high-speed drive through the
city and up the winding road of Mount Corcovado to the statue of Christ the Redeemer. She pulls
into the parking lot, turning off the car.

NAITO YOSHI
So, what did you see?

The character feels like they can trust her. If they tell Naito about the woman with no eyes, she fully
believes them.

NAITO YOSHI
There are legends from my home, like that of Kuchisake-onna, the slit-mouthed woman. She
was a woman mutilated in life who, after death, returned to seek vengeance. Those she
haunts will find no peace until she has peace. Unfortunately, the only way to bring her peace
is to punish those responsible. Now, enough talk of ghosts.

She climbs over onto their side to straddle their lap.

NAITO YOSHI
So, do you want to go for a ride?

HISTORY LESSON: After the race, the character who is Cole’s Bastard notices their father’s
limousine outside the club. The window lowers, and Tiberius invites them in.

TIBERIUS COLE
Get in. I’d like to have a drink with my (son/daughter).

The limo drives them back to Cole’s estate. He pours the character an expensive whiskey).

TIBERIUS COLE
Kathryn speaks highly of you. I’m proud to hear it.

The two drink in silence for a time before Cole continues.

TIBERIUS COLES
Do you know much about history? When Æthelred, King of Wessex, died, his son believed
Æthelwold would succeed his father. But Æthelred knew that his son would be unable to
manage the kingdom’s affairs or its enemies. So, on his deathbed, Æthelred named his
brother Alfred, his successor. You are Æthelwold, and Kathryn is Alfred. This isn’t personal.
It’s just what’s best for the kingdom. I just don’t want they to be any misunderstanding.

At that moment, one of Cole’s mistresses arrives. He excuses himself, leaving the character to see
themselves out.

PAGE 18

Felipe Guedes (Order #39526931)

The characters arrive at Kathryn’s home. She pours herself a drink and offers one to everyone else.
Roberto downs his drink in a single pull. This is something Kathryn notices.

ROBERTO QUADROS
[CHARACTER’S NAME] and I have something to tell you.

Roberto lets the character tell her their secret. As Kathryn listens silently, her eyes glisten until
tears run down her cheeks. By the time they finish, her eyes are red from crying.

KATHRYN VAN RYCE

Fuk you. Maria is alive. How could you have kept this a secret from me?

Roberto tries to take the heat.

ROBERTO QUADROS
Cole wanted her dead. If he found out, you would at least be protected.

The next person to speak, Kathryn, cuts them off.

KATHRYN VAN RYCE

The only thing I want to hear is to know where she is. (Kathryn throws her glass against the wall)
If she is alive, we are going to find her!

The only person who knows where Maria went is Shalk Hertzog. Kathryn wants to go see him
immediately. Hertzog lives in a warehouse near the docks. He meets them wearing a robe and is
pissed that they’ve woken him up. There are two bodyguards, each armed with an assault rifle.
When the characters ask him about Maria, he pulls a flask out of his robe and takes a drink.

SHALK HERTZOG
I knew this would all come out someday because people can’t keep their fucking mouths
shut. (Looking at the character Sworn to Secrecy and Roberto) Did you think I would risk falling
on my sword for fucking $30K? When Cole hears about this, he will know I was loyal because
I did what he fucking asked. I killed her.

Kathryn draws her pistol. Hertzog’s men raise their assault rifles.

KATHRYN VAN RYCE

Where is she? What did you do with her body?

SHALK HERTZOG
I didn’t kill her right away. I took her to Vargas’s place in Campos to lay low until I could
figure shit out. I killed her there. She’s buried on the property.

ROBERTO QUADROS
You are going to show up where she is buried, Shalk. Get dressed. We leave in 10 minutes for
Campos.

SHALK HERTZOG
Sure. I’ll see to it you get your 30 grand back.

Hertzog knows he’s on thin ice with Kathryn. So, when he gets dressed, he calls to ensure extra
firepower is waiting for him in Campos. He also calls Ruiz to let him know what’s happened.

PAGE 19

Felipe Guedes (Order #39526931)

Four hours later, the characters are at Vargas’s estate. The bodies have been removed, and police
tape covers the crime scene. Hertzog leads the characters (along with his now four men) behind the
villa and into the forest. Kathryn reaches out to take the hand of the character she Shared a Kiss
with and says to them.
KATHRYN VAN RYCE
I want to know everything. I need to know how she died.

Kathryn lets the characters take the lead with Hertzog. After walking for 15 minutes, they arrive at
an empty, shallow grave.

SHALK HERTZOG
What the fuck? This is where I fucking buried her. I swear it. Vargas must have moved her.

If the characters (or Roberto) ask if it’s possible she was alive when they buried her, Hertzog is
adamant she was not.
SHALK HERTZOG
She was fucking dead. She was shot in both eyes. One of those bullets was mine, and I didn’t
miss.

Kathryn can’t hold back a cry of grief.

KATHRYN VAN RYCE

(sobbing) What else did you do to her?

SHALK (exchanging glances with his men)

Vargas and his men may have had a little fun with her. But I swear I didn’t touch her.

Kathryn moves her hand towards her pistol. Sensing things might go to shit, Hertzog tries to shift
the blame to someone else.

SHALK HERTZOG
Listen, I wasn’t the only fucking one involved. The other bullet came from Ruiz. After we put
her in the ground, he told me all that stuff about Interpol was bullshit. That he made it all up.
He’s the one you should want to fucking murder. I thought I was doing you a favor. You
should be fucking thanking me.

Allow the character an opportunity to act. If they don’t do anything, Roberto does.

PAGE 20

Felipe Guedes (Order #39526931)

ROBERTO QUADROS
There is one good thing that came out of this Shalk.

SHALK HERTZOG
What’s that, my friend?

ROBERTO QUADROS
We don’t have to dig your grave.

Roberto draws both pistols, his first round going onto Shalk Hertzog (doing 40 points). Ask the
characters how they react. Kathryn is with Roberto. Roll initiative.

SHALK HERTZOG: Health: 120 (currently 80), Feats: 75%, Actions: 2, Threat: -10%, Weapons:
Handgun (Dmg: 1d6x10+25, Ammo: 15). A light bullet-proof vest offers 30 points of protection.

4 x HERTZOG’S THUGS: Health: 70, Feats 60%, Actions: 1, Threat: N/A, Weapons: Assault Rifles
(Dmg: 1d8x20 (with 5 round burst), Ammo: 30).

Once Hertzog and his men are dead, Kathryn stands over the grave.

KATHRYN VAN RYCE

She was innocent, and Ruiz framed her. We need to know why.

ROBERTO QUADROS
So what is she now? A ghost.

KATHRYN VAN RYCE

She’s my punishment for not believing her. Now I am her vengeance.

PAGE 21

Felipe Guedes (Order #39526931)

When the characters contact Ruiz, he tells them he’ll be
waiting for them at the look-off beneath the Christ the
Confessor statue. When they arrive, he’s smoking a
cigarette. His hands are shaking.

DETECTIVE DIEGO RUIZ

I’ve seen her. I know she’s dead because I killed her.
Whether she’s a fucking ghost or a revenant doesn’t
really matter. She haunts my thoughts every fucking
moment.

He turns to face Kathryn.

DETECTIVE DIEGO RUIZ

The idea of framing her for being a rat was Cole’s. The
two of you were getting too close. He was afraid he
was going to lose you. He needed you to stay loyal, so
he needed it to be your decision to kill her. The only
way to do that was to convince you that she had
betrayed us. He was so proud when you gave the
order. Ironic that your loyalty wasn’t the issue (He
looks at Roberto and the character Sworn to Secrecy). I
hope killing Caesar brings you some peace.

With that, Ruiz climbs over the railing and jumps, falling
hundreds of feet to his death. No one besides the
characters seems to notice.

Then they hear a ringing and notice Ruiz’s phone is lying

near the railing. Kathryn answers, listening for a few
minutes before throwing the phone over the edge.

Kathryn falls to her knees, but there are no tears.

KATHRYN VAN RYCE

It was Cole. He knows we’re coming. Maria visited him
in a dream and told him we would kill him. I’ve always
done everything he asked since I was a little girl. He
bought me from human traffickers. He was more than a
father and mentor. I thought he was my savior, but my
freedom was always an illusion. I don’t know what to
do. Tell me what I should do.

Again, let the characters respond first. Then Roberto calls

everyone to action.

ROBERTO QUADROS
It took more than one blade to kill Caesar. We end this
together.

Roberto holds out his hand. Kathryn stands, adding hers to

his. Presumably, the other characters do the same.

KATHRYN VAN RYCE

Together to the end.
PAGE 22

Felipe Guedes (Order #39526931)

Roberto suggests dropping by Hertzog’s warehouse as he is known to keep a small armory.
Give the characters any weapon they want within reason (ultimately, it’s up to you). They can
also get medium armor. Take into consideration the following when they attack Cole’s
mansion. Provide the characters with the Player’s Map on page 30.

• Before attacking the mansion, any injured character can heal 40 points.

• There are fifteen guards in total guarding the mansion. Their stats are on page 30. You
can adjust the number of guards as needed.

• Behind the mansion is a steep mountain making an approach from that direction difficult.
They are also likely to be spotted by snipers.

• A formidable security fence surrounds the perimeter. It is topped with razor wire. Climbing
over it requires an Athletics roll (ODDS: -30%). A failed roll results in 2d10+10 damage.

• Each entrance to the mansion is guarded by two pick-up trucks mounted with .50 caliber
machine guns. The guards are familiar with the characters and are under orders to open
fire on sight. Of course, once the characters have the trucks, they can turn the machine
guns on the other guards.

• The guards with the pick-ups are under orders to hold their positions. The other guards
will move position as needed.

• Cole is waiting in his study at the rear of the mansion.

During combat, ask each character to roll a L Skull Die. If they roll the Skull (1L), they see
Maria, covered in dirt and blood, watching them with sightless eyes. The character receives a
20 point bonus to their Action Pool.

PAGE 23

Felipe Guedes (Order #39526931)

When the characters pass through the inner court
inner courtyard, they see the pool is full of blood. They
find Cole sitting in a chair in his study. His eyes are
sitting on his desk next to a bloody knife.

TIBERIUS COLE
I know how to beat her. You just need to give her
your eyes. I am free of her! Do you hear me? I am
free of her!

Kathryn raises her gun.

KATHRYN VAN RYCE

Together.

Roberto raises his gun alongside her. Presumably, the

characters do the same. They can all pull their triggers
together.

When they return to the inner courtyard, Maria’s body is floating in the pool. She has eyes and
appears to be sleeping peacefully. Kathryn walks down the steps into the pool. She raises her
hand to her neck where the cross used to be.

KATHRYN VAN RYCE

Forgive me.
The character who is Sworn to Secrecy realizes it is in his pocket. If he gives it to Kathryn, she
takes it, tears of redemption in her eyes. Maria’s body slips peacefully below the surface.

The red of the water fades to crystal blue. Maria is gone.

PAGE 24

Felipe Guedes (Order #39526931)

Kathryn, Roberto, and the characters are called to the office of Felix Batista.

FELIX BATISTA
It is unfortunate what happened to Tiberius. He and I had an understanding. He
supported my campaign, and I never asked any questions.
People like Tiberius Cole can only operate because people like me let them.
I understand, Kathryn, that you know most of Tiberius’ business. I’d like you to take
over his operation, so we can continue our arrangement. So, what do you say?

KATHRYN VAN RYCE

Give me a moment.

FELIX BATISTA
Of course. Take all the time you need.

KATHRYN VAN RYCE

So, what do you think?

Roberto puts his hand out.

ROBERTO QUADROS
Together.

Kathryn adds hers to his. Presumably, the characters do the same, but each person needs to
make their own choice. Tomorrow awaits.

THE END
This adventure is inspired by one of my longest-running campaigns. Thanks to BG (The great
Roberto Quadros), TC (Billy Chavez), JP (Angelica Karroque), TP (Keefe Gil), and JR (Ivana
Kalashnikov). Finally, thanks to TN (Logan) whose role-playing helped bring “Rio” to life.
R.I.P., my friend.

Kathryn was born in South Africa. At age fourteen, she was
kidnapped and sold into slavery. She was shipped to South
America, where she came to the attention of crime boss Tiberius
Cole. He purchased her and raised her as his own daughter.
Kathryn was smart and tough, rising quickly through the ranks. At
age 30, she is now Cole’s number two.

Eighteen months ago, Kathryn fell in love with Maria Farius, a

member of her crew. The two became inseparable, something
Tiberius Cole saw as a threat. When it was revealed that Maria was
an informant for Interpol, Kathryn was forced to make the most
difficult decision of her life. She proved her loyalty to Cole by
ordering Maria’s execution. She hasn’t been the same since.

Roberto Quadros grew up in one of the poorest favelas in Rio. He

needed to be tough and smart to survive. He gained some notoriety
as a pit fighter. This brought him to the attention of a domos who
worked for Tiberius Cole.

He quickly came to the attention of Kathryn Van Ryce, who

eventually requested he serves as her personal bodyguard. The
two became close friends. Roberto cares deeply for Kathryn. So
much so that when the order came down to execute Maria Farias,
he couldn’t do it. Instead, he paid Shalk Hertog $30,000 to smuggle
her out of the country.

Personality: Loyal, honorable, quiet, reflective, courageous,

CHARACTER BACKGROUNDS
Each character should pick one of the following:

A Crush with Kathryn (any gender)

It has been almost a year since Maria Farias, who was in a romantic
relationship with Kathryn, was killed for betraying the syndicate.
You’ve worked with Kathryn over the past couple of months, and
the two of you have become close. Last night, after sharing a few
tequilas, she kissed you passionately, but it didn’t go any further.
You are uncertain and excited about the possibilities.

Sworn to Secrecy (any gender)

When Cole and Kathryn ordered that Maria was to be killed for
betraying the group to Interpol, it fell to you and Roberto Quadros
to do the deed. You couldn’t do it. Instead, the two of you paid
Shalk Hertzog $30,000 to get Maria out of the country. You know
that if Cole finds out, he’ll likely kill you for treason. Optionally, the
character is in a relationship with Roberto. Don’t tell any of the
other player’s about this background.

Driver (any gender)

You are a prodigy when it comes to driving anything on four
wheels. For Drive rolls, any penalties to the ODDS are 10% better.

Tiberius Cole’s Bastard (any gender)

Tiberius Cole is your biological father but shows little to no affection
over your life. Your mother was one of his mistresses. She didn’t
want you to have anything to do with Cole’s crime empire, but after
she died, you had little choice but to go to him. He made you a
soldier, emphasizing you would receive no favoritism. You rarely
see him. However, Kathryn welcomed you warmly as a member of
the family. You think of her as your big sister.

A DEAL IS A FUCKING DEAL
A private investigator named Ivan Roque has acquired pictures of Felix Batista making love to
two women; neither of them is his wife. The reporter wants $100,000 in return for the
photographs.

Tiberius has agreed to pay the money. The characters are to make the exchange on Batista’s
behalf. Tiberius respects Roque’s entrepreneurship but wants it made clear that once the
blackmail is paid if copies of the photographs are made public, there will be consequences.

When the characters arrive, they are surprised to find Roque is not alone. An equal number of
men who work for a rival domo (boss), the Red Mambas, are present. If they get the photos, they
are sure to release them. They want to rob Cole of his presidential candidate.

IVAN ROQUE
Extend my apologies to Mr. Cole. After we spoke, I became aware of another interested
party. I don’t have the photographs on me. They are with my associate who will be
watching. So, shall we start the bidding at $100,000? Once the winner delivers the cash,
they’ll deliver the photos.

The characters only have $100,000 but can get more with a phone call to Cole. The Red
Mambas are willing to go as high as $250,000. If any character makes an Observation roll
(ODDS: -20%), they notice a nearby sedan with the engine running. Inside the car, a man is
watching the exchange. This must be Roque’s associate.

If they contact Cole, he is furious.

TIBERIUS COLE
$100,000 was agreed to. I expect Mr. Roque to keep his end of the bargain. Explain it to
him a deal is a fucking deal. I’ll be expecting you within the hour with the photographs. Am
I clear on this?

How this plays out is up to the characters’ actions. The Red Mambas can be reasoned with but
need to benefit somehow. They resort to violence if they feel they’ve been disrespected. Roque’s
associate tries to make an escape at the first sign of trouble.

The photos are on a USB. If they check the images, in all of them the women with Batista appear
to have no eyes.

WEREGILD
The characters are called to a convenience store. All of the businesses in this area pay tribute
in return for protection. Detective Ruiz meets the characters outside.

DETECTIVE DIEGO RUIZ

One of your people killed the owner. I can buy you about fifteen minutes before I call it
in. Just let me know what to put in the report.

Inside, the owner is lying dead behind the counter. His wife is kneeling at his side, sobbing. A
syndicate collector named Aleixo Cavaco is pacing back and forth. He still has the gun in his
hand, a .50 Desert Eagle. He knows he’s in trouble and won’t give it up, even pointing it at
anyone who tries to take it.
ALEIXO CAVACO
You gotta understand. I’ve been collecting for Mr. Cole for a year now. I just wanted to
get noticed, so I could move up. So, I’m thinking the tribute is always the same. But it’s
Carnivale, so everyone is making a shit-ton more money. So I ask for double, but not for
me. I was going to give every cent to Mr. Cole. Everyone else paid, but this fucker
wouldn’t. Things just got out of hand. The fucker wouldn’t pay.

The characters know that Cole never changes the tribute amount for those who pay regularly.
The owner of this store always paid on time and in full. If they check on the owner, they realize
Aleixo emptied his magazine (he has since reloaded). This is serious enough that the
characters should call Kathryn. She explains Cole’s position.

KATHRYN VAN RYCE

What’s done is done. All we can do is try to
make it right by paying a weregild,
compensation for the life taken. Ask the
owner’s wife how much she wants. Within
reason, see to it that she gets it.

Ruiz helps the woman to her feet. When they

ask how much she wants, she glares at Aleixo.
Her mascara is running down her face. She was
wearing red for Carnivale. It looks like she is
crying blood.

DISTRESSED WIFE
I want justice. I want his life (pointing at
Aleixo)

Knowing he’s in deep shit, Aleixo is ready to

fight and run. How this plays out is up to the
characters’ actions.

If they try to talk him down, give them a

Persuasion roll. The ODDS depend on how well
they role-play the situation.

NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN
The characters are called to one of the favelas by one of Cole’s domos. When they arrive,
they find half a dozen dead. Some are Cole’s men, who were transporting tribute when
they were ambushed by gang members. A shoot-out ensued, and the tribute is missing.

There are plenty of witnesses, all impoverished residents of the favelas. If the characters
can make a Persuasion roll (ODDS: -20%), they find someone willing to talk in exchange
for a few bucks.

WITNESS
The men killed each other. After everyone was dead, I saw Davi Mata search the
dead men. He took a bag and ran away.

The witness tells the characters where Davi lives with his family. When they arrive at his
address, they pass a cement wall painted with what, at first glance, looks like the Madona.
However, her eyes look empty and bleeding. Ask the characters to make a Self-Control
roll. If they fail, they feel claustrophobic in the narrow alleys.
.
Davi lives in nothing more than a shack with his wife and five children. The money is on
their kitchen table, and Davi is in the middle of telling his children how their lives are going
to change.

When confronted, Davi is too terrified to do anything but beg for forgiveness. There is no
question he knew the money belonged to Cole. How this plays out is up to the characters.
If they contact Kathryn, she leaves it up to them.

KATHRYN VAN RYCE

Cole would expect an example to be made, but what can you take from people who
have nothing? I’ll leave it up to you, but I don’t want to make the man’s children
orphans.

SINS OF THE SON
One of the donos (petty crime boss) wants to speak with the characters before he offers tribute.
The characters can meet him at a car dealership under his control.

VALENTIN DUARTE
I have recently discovered that one of my men has been stealing from me. He has placed
me in an impossible situation. Unfortunately, I can’t pay the tribute this week, but I will see
that Cole receives triple on the next delivery.

I know I’m in no position, but I have a favor to ask. We have the man responsible inside. I
know he should be killed, but I cannot bring myself to do it. He is my son, Bento. A fuck-up,
but he is still my son. To keep my honor intact, I turn him over to you for justice.

It’s up to the characters to decide how to deal with this situation. They can choose to dispatch the
normal measure of justice (death), or they can get creative and leave Duarte with his son. They
must be careful not to damage Cole’s reputation by being perceived as weak. If they contact
Kathryn, she refuses to make the decision for them. She wants them to get the experience of
making tough decisions.

If they kill Bento, they hear another gunshot and a commotion. If they investigate, they discover
Valentin Duarte has shot himself in the temple. The bullet took out both of his eyes. If the
characters took Bento somewhere else to kill him, they hear of Valentin’s death later from Ruiz.

FIVE STAR RATING

The characters receive a call from Mauro Alcantara. a hotel manager who pays tribute in return
for protection and problem-solving. The manager takes the characters into a back office where a
woman is lying on a couch. She is clearly in a lot of physical and emotional pain. The blood
vessels in her eyes have burst, and her eyes are severely bloodshot. The characters can’t help
but be reminded of the Ladrão de Olhos. If someone makes a Medical roll, they determine she
should be taken to a hospital.

MAURO ALCANTARA
There are five men in the penthouse suite. They believe because they are rich, they can do
whatever they want. They called down for bottles of vodka. I sent my daughter, Amy, to
bring it to them. We were so busy with Carnivale that I didn’t realize she hadn’t returned.
This is what the five of them did to her. When I confronted them, they said, don’t worry, old
man, we’ll give her a five-star rating. Bastards!

If the characters call Kathryn, she can’t be reached.

The penthouse is on the eighth floor. The five men are currently drinking, shooting cocaine, and
playing poker. They are rich, arrogant and believe their money will protect them. One of them has
a handgun sitting on the bar.

The men offer to buy off the characters, believing money can solve anything. How this plays out is
up to the characters’ actions.

5 ASSHOLES: Health: 30, Feats: 50%, Actions: 1, Threat: N/A, Weapons: Fists: 5 damage, 1 x

I JUST WANT MY SHOT
The characters are called to one of the many fighting arenas in the city. In the locker room, they
meet Micaela Oliveira. She is a challenger in the fight’s main event. She has no personal
connection with Cole, but one of the other fighters said he might help.

MICAELA OLIVEIRA
A man named Ivan Cabral told me to throw the fight, or he’d hurt my family. I didn’t train
and bleed to get where I am to throw down. I just want my shot. I know Cabral is a donos. I
don’t have much money, but I’m asking Mr. Cole to help me take it.

The characters know Ivan Cabral is a donos for the Red Mambas. He has ringside seats at the
fight. If Micaela doesn’t throw the fight, she wins, costing Cabral a lot of money. He arrives with
four goons with baseball bats. They intend to break Micaela’s arms. The characters won’t be
able to reach Cole or Kathryn, so they have to make this decision on their own.

If they help Micaela, she takes a cross on a chain from around her neck.

MICAELA OLIVEIRA
Please give this to Mr. Cole to show my appreciation.

IVAN CABRAL: Health: 70, Feats: 60%, Actions: 1, Threat: N/A, Weapons: Baseball bat (Dmg:
1d4x10+10), handgun (Dmg: 1d6x10+10, Ammo: 15)

4 x BLACK MAMBA THUGS: Health: 30, Feats 50%, Actions: 1, Threat: N/A, Weapons:
Baseball bats (Dmg: 1d4x10).

MICAELA OLIVEIRA: Health: 100 (currently 40). Feats: 70%, Actions: 1, Threat: -10%,
Weapons: Fists & Feet 25 damage.
