PROJECT ACT: Active Commitment on Task


I. TITLE
In-Service Training to Strengthen Teachers’ Competencies in
Teaching and Learning
As required by the Department of
II. RATIONALE Education, every school should conduct in-service
(includes background training for teachers in order to refresh, to reload
and legal basis) and to upgrade teachers with necessary
knowledge and skills to respond to the learners’
especially in this time of pandemic
Education is a continues process that requires qualified teacher
as an essential component, to achieve learning goals of the
educational process. It is also stated that the nature of teaching
professional makes it necessary for all teachers to engage in
continuing professional development programs. One of the important
functions of a teacher is to motivate their students to study hard, and
to encourage them for lifelong learning. This process leads to build
appropriate human resources for the nation. It is necessary for
teachers to show interest and enthusiasm for continuing professional
development. Continuous professional development assesses teachers
to keep abreast of changes in the educational process. Thus, teachers
will be aware of the advancement in technologies and the development
of curricula and instructional mode. Continuous professional
development is necessary because it helps in maintaining and
enhancing the quality of the teachers.

In this vein, it can be said that INSET is a continuing and


practical activity for teachers to develop professional knowledge and
skills throughout the education process. INSET can take different
forms in attempting to achieve different objectives to bring change in
education.

In-service teacher training program is any program or activity


that is designed to have a positive impact on the education process
which takes place within an educational institution. It also includes
all the practices and experiences that a teacher undergoes after
joining the teaching profession. It is composed of both professional
and subject matter of education. The importance of planning in-
service teacher training programs is designed to meet the condition of
the educational system and professional needs of the teachers [4]. In-
service training programs are a crucial element for the professional

development of a teacher. It enhances teacher teaching and


contributes to view from a new angle to meet classroom needs [5].
Continuous and efficient training programs of teacher development
are the key factors in the success of the educational process. It helps
teachers to follow the changes in this process, and enables them to
advance in technologies, development of curricula and modern
teaching techniques. In-service training programs play significant role
in teacher's continuous professional development. In addition, teacher
professional development plays a crucial role on the quality of
education in schools and improves the academic achievements of
students [6]. In-service training program is important because it
promotes a very flexible environment, therefore teachers easily adapt
with the working situation. It also motivates employees or employers
and increase creativity in the educational process.

In connection to this, Diata Integrated School conducted a 5-day


training in INSET that would help teachers develop professional
knowledge and skills. Furthermore, through this training teachers can
adopt to new situations in their professional life and apply what they
have learned in the teaching process.

III. OBJECTIVES: Terminal Objective:


(intended for the
participants) At the end of the session, the teacher- participants are expected
to promote the continuous professional improvement of the staff of the
school system. Furthermore, by attending the training, teachers will
be involved in participative and collaborative learning in the teaching
profession.

Enabling Objectives :

Teachers are expected to:

⮚ acquaint with the implementation of Catch-up Fridays.

⮚ determine the kind of assessment strategies suited to learners.

⮚ familiarize with the Guidelines of School Governing Council

⮚ know how to build relationship with the community.

⮚ create an Individual Development Plan.

⮚ craft Monitoring and Evaluation Plan

⮚ make a Project Proposal and Completion Report

⮚ know how to manage classroom structure to engage learners


individually or in groups through meaningful exploration.
⮚ identify strategies that enhance learner’s skills in numeracy
and literacy.
⮚ apply different reading strategies in teaching.

⮚ review the Revised Blooms Taxonomy

⮚ refresh the mind of teachers in making Action Research

⮚ identify Intervention Strategies for Students At-Risk

⮚ devise a Strategic Intervention Material

⮚ understand the different Stress Management Techniques
