JIHAD

Jihad literally means exerting our best and greatest efforts to

achieve something in Islamic terminology it is to strive in way
of Allah by spiritual, mental and physical means it is not
equivalent to word for which the Arabic word is Al Harb or
Qital. Mujahid is the person who struggles for Allahs cause
through usage of pen, tongue, worship, wealth and if
inevitable arms against injustice evil tyranny and oppression.
the Quran describe Jihad as an integral part of Faith as
mention “The believers are those who strive with their wealth
and lives for cause of Allah. Such are sincere”.Jihad is a Farz e
kiffaya which means that if the society performs the
obligation, rest is exempted from it.
In the early islamic years,muslims greatly suffered at the
hands of Quraish and faced humiliation but it was in Madina
when Allah granted permission of Jihad in self-defense." Fight
against those who fights you, but do not transgress limits."
Unfortunately, many! Quranic verses are today taken without
context and wrongly to justify terrorist activities.
There are three main types of Jihad namely: Spiritual Jihad
Mental Jihad and Physical Jihad. The first type of Jihad is
spiritual jihad or Jihad bin Nafs which is to fight against one's
own self against evil ideas, desires and lust of wealth or
power. It is considered as the greatest Jihad by many scholars
and regarded as "Jihad et Akbar". The Sunnah and Quran also
support this View as Prophets said "The greatest Jihad is to
fight against evil passions of oneself." On another occasion
when & the Muslims army was returning victorious from a
battle the Prophet said. "We are returning from the lesser
Jihad to the greater one." "When the companion's asked
about the greater Jihad, he explained that it was fighting the
carnal self.
Hence, this Jihad is controlling one's own soul as divine him
towards heavenly spheres and satanic power tempts him
towards acts of evil. Therefore, this Jihad is to fight against
Nafs-e-Ammara which is instigating heart to evil and purging
evil to attain Nafs e Mutmaina which is a clear and satisfied
soul and remembrance of Allah Quran indicates that one who
succeeds in the struggle rise above the level of angels and
those who failed desends to a level lower than that of
animals.
The second type of jihad is mental jihad which struggle to
convey Allahs last message to mankind and to counter evil
through knowledge and wisdom Allah says “who is better in
speech than one who calls men to Allah” this jihad itself is
categorized into jihad bin ilmm ,jihad knowledge [jihad
mental] is usage of mental and intellectual capabilities to call
people to Islam or however it is not limited to preaching Islam
to non-Muslims alone but it also applies to reform the faith of
people in Islam.
It is necessary for one with knowledge to use his tongue or
write by pen to create awareness and provide Islamic
teachings with wisdom and gentleness gentleness as Allah
says invite all to the way of your Lord with wisdom and
beautiful preaching and argue with them in the ways that our
best it is also a part of sacrifice of wealth and comfort two

in the way of spreading the truth example of hazrat khadija is
quite evident as she spent all of her wealth and power in
assisting the prophetic mission and even suffered persecution
in boycott of banu Hashim the spreading of Allahs message
itself is a jihad.
The third type of jihad is physical jihad which is use of physical
force to defend Muslims against oppression and transgression
at the hands of enemies of Islam this jihad can also be
referred as hands as jihad bil safi or qitle. according to Islamic
teachings it is the last and ultimate option which is initiated
when other efforts have failed. Its goal is not to gain riches or
to kill people forsake of power but to create justice and
promote cause of ella physical jihad is compulsory on Muslims
when an Islamic state is under attack and when the ruler
makes the public announcement for the horse the people
should readily respond and volunteer these resolves to fight
till the end of his life and are willing to drop the last blood of
their body to prove love and sincerity to Allah it also for
bidens to call mujahid who are killed as dead and instead
referred them as martyrs Allah has informed in Quran that the
martyrs are guaranteed closeness to God and our promised
highest of reward in hereafter. Islam also has specific rules of
conduct of jihad this includes that the Muslim shall not be the
first to end the fighting women children elderly and sick and
not to be harmed moreover fruit bearing trees and not
allowed to be cut down and animals shall not be killed except
for need of food worshipping places of any other religion
churches temples etc should not be demolished after the war
the corpse shall not be mutilated or disfigured and the
captives to be treated kindly booty shall not be stolen and any
ambassador should not be killed or mistreated any form of
treaty should be respected and fulfilled and no unjust
aggression shall be made on weaker states. The treatment of
captives and surrendering soldiers is also described protection
should be offered to them “And if anyone of Pagan seek your
protection then grant him protection so that he may hear the
word of Allah” the prisoner should be provided with the
similar food drinks and dress offer to Muslims soldiers and
even in case of food shortage the prisoner should be fed first
they should be given chance to offer service by teaching their
techniques or pay ransom as well.
