NURSING INFORMATICS SYSTEM : WIRELESS

PHONES

There are a variety of wireless communication systems for transmitting voice, video, and
data in local or wide areas. There are point-to-point wireless bridges, wireless local area
networks, multidirectional wireless cellular systems, and satellite communication systems. This
topic discusses "mobile" wireless technologies that provide voice and data communication
services to mobile users who use cell phones, PDAS, Internet terminals, and related computing
devices. The number of wireless mobile devices is increasing globally.

WHAT IS WIRELESS PHONE

● Portable telephone designed to facilitate immediate communication & access of one person
to another.
● A wireless phone is a portable telephone that can make and receive calls over a radio
frequency link while the user is moving within a telephone service area, as opposed to a
fixed-location phone.
● People can access whatever information or data they need in real time, courtesy of a wireless
network.
● They can provide faster and easier access to patient records, charting, etc.
● They are very personalized because there are many kinds of software that can be uploaded
depending on the users need and desires.

HISTORY

 The first mobile phones, referred to as First Generation or 1G. These first mobile phones
used analog technology which was much less reliable than the digital technology we use today.

 During the 1990s, great improvements were made in the mobile phone technology. These
phones used Second Generation, or 2G technology. In 1990, the first cell phone call was made
using new digital technology that became characteristic of this era.

 The Third-Generation technology, or 3G, is what many people currently use in their
digital cellular phones today. This technology was created soon after the excitement that the 2G
technology created. This new technology is not only capable of transferring voice data (such as
phone calls), but it is also able to transfer of data including emails, information and instant
messages.
USES IN NURSING
● Integration with current messaging systems
● Communication with other healthcare providers
● Patient communication & satisfaction

ADVANTAGES
● Convenience.
● Ease of connectivity.
● Maintenance and installation are less cost for these networks.
● Portability.
● Programs work quickly with no lag or booting up.
● Collects and stores data at bedside.
● The benefit of having information in the palm of one’s hand not only saves time but reduces
trips to the computer by 80%” (Santori 2008).

DISADVANTAGES
● An unauthorized person can easily capture the wireless signals which spread through the air.
● The relationship between the device and the user may not be positive.
● It is very important to secure the wireless network so that the information cannot be misused
by unauthorized users.
● Risk for colonization when being used with multiple patients and not being cleaned.
● Poor durability
● Employee compliance
● If having to purchase device for own desire, it can be costly.

NURSE COMPETENCIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE INFORMATICS

NURSE

● Nurses will need basic knowledge and experience.

● Nurses should be willing to continue their skills and be open to their advantages.
● The informatics nurse should be available for assistance with co-workers and help in the
training.
● They should be available for questions.
● Leading the way for change for current and future nurses in the use and benefit of computer
technology.

CONCLUSION
In order to improve patient outcomes, reduce costs across the board, improve access to
specialist medical services, and deliver more effective preventative care, wireless phones may be
essential. "Nurses must be able to quickly and easily access and use information as the acuity of
the patient population increases" (Greenfield 2007). The medical field of the future belongs to
smartphones and handheld wireless gadgets. The extra processes in nursing can be removed and
consolidated into a single, pocket-friendly location. These devices will not only give the nurses
back the time they spent using or waiting for the computer, but they will also give the patient
back time. Errors will reduce, patient care will improve, and time will be better spent.
