2. Is it very interesting
3. Do you work or study?
- I’m currently working as a content writer at a small private English center, which is a prevalent job in
Vietnam. My main job is to compile academic materials for the English learners at the center.

Prevalent (adj): phổ biến, thịnh hành

Compile something (verb): biên soạn

- I'm currently working as an intern for a marketing company. It's an entrance position so the workload is not
too much and the salary is quite low. I've been holding this position for about 3 years and I’m looking forward
to being promoted real soon.
1. Do you like your job/study?
Absolutely. I get to work in such a dynamic environment alongside people who are so creative and unique. This
makes me feel like I need to try harder to think outside of the box and to innovate more.

2. Why did you choose to do that type of work?

Although it’s not a really well-paid job, it gives me the satisfaction of making a contribution to society. I have a
particular liking for education and this work is one kind of education and training careers. The progress of the
students there is my motivation for trying harder.

The satisfaction of making a contribution (noun phrase): sự thỏa mãn vì có thể đóng góp một phần công sức
Have a particular liking for somebody/ something (verb phrase): đặc biệt thích ai/ cái gì
Motivation for (doing) something (noun phrase): động lực cho cái gì/ để làm gì

3. Is there some other kind of work you would rather do?

I always dream of being an interpreter. Actually, I am a die-hard fan of my lecturer at university, who works as
an interpreter and teaches interpreting at my university at the same time. I was always immersed in his stories
about the occupation. It’s both challenging and fascinating.

Always dream of (doing) something (verb phrase): luôn mơ về việc …

Die-hard fan (noun phrase): fan cuồng, fan cứng
Immersed in something /ɪˈmɜːst/ (adj): đắm chìm
Both challenging and fascinating /ˈtʃæl.ɪn.dʒɪŋ/ /ˈfæs.ən.eɪ.tɪŋ/ (adj): vừa khó/ đầy thử thách vừa thú vị

4. Do you miss being a student?/ Do you enjoy being a student?

I do miss being a student sometimes, simply because I was so carefree and stress-free during that time. Now I
have to wake up every morning with a financial burden on my shoulder. However, I think such responsibilities
are needed for my maturity.
STUDY

5. Do you study or work?

I’m currently a junior (svien năm 3) at National Economics University – one of the top schools in Vietnam.
Now I still can’t believe I was able to gain admission (được nhận vào) to the university because it’s so
competitive.

6. What do you like about your study?

For the most part, I would say it’s the environment. We speak in English 100% in the class and it helps us
develop our English skills substantially. Besides, almost all the classrooms are equipped with top-notch
facilities ( cơ sở vật chất hiện đại) like air-conditioners or overhead projectors. My teachers and friends are nice
as well. All in all, it’s a great place to study.

7. What is the most difficult part of your subject?

You have to remember lots of legislation and cases( pháp luật và trường hợp) and not only remember their
names, but also how they affect each part of the law and how they interact with each other. Physically it can
also be exhausting because we have to read very dense texts for a few hours every day.

8. Why did you choose to study that major?

Since I was little, I have always dreamed about (mơ về) becoming a boss operating a business of my own.
That’s why I believe after completing my degree, I would be well-equipped (được trang bị tốt) to start opening
a coffee shop in the city and soon realize my dream.

9. Do you like your major? (Why?/Why not?)

[>Yes] Absolutely, I have never regretted choosing Business Administration as my major one bit. Beside
having considerate lecturers and classmates who’ve helped me improve my performance at school, I find the
subjects extremely practical. Therefore, although some courses really gave me a hard time, they were very
worthwhile(đáng giá).

10. What kind of school did you go to as a child?

I think I’m no different from most Vietnamese children as I also went to public schools from kindergarten until
the end of my fifth grade. Although the facilities and amenities (cơ sở vật chất) provided were not necessarily
fascinating, I enjoyed having a lot of friends to talk to.

11. What was your favorite subject as a child?

Surprisingly, I considered myself a good singer back then. And since students were taught Music once a week, I
remember that I loved every moment of my classes for a good five or six years. However, since my voice
cracked because of puberty (tuổi dậy thì) and singing is no longer my forte (sở trường), music has stopped being
enjoyable.

12. Do you think your country has an effective education

system?
To be honest, I don’t think it is that effective as long as younger students, specifically those in secondary
schools and highschools, have to study more than ten subjects in one semester, most of which won’t come in
handy (useful) once they enter universities. For example, I found other subjects besides English and Literature
useless when I studied English Language in my university.

13. Are you looking forward to working?

I’m well aware of (biết rất rõ) the challenging world of employment. However, I never say no to challenges and
I’m ready for my abilities and determination( khả năng và kiên định) to be tested. Moreover, I think working
would definitely be a way to toughen myself up so I could become a better version of myself. So yes, I’m really
looking forward to it.
14. Do you prefer to study in the mornings or the afternoons
ACCOMMODATION

1. Do you live in a house or an apartment?

Actually, I share a single room in the halls of residence with my friend because I live on campus. Almost all
first-year students are advised to stay near the university. However, I prefer to enjoy life in student digs in the
town.

a single room (n): phòng đơn

halls of residence (n): ký túc xá
live on campus: sống trong khuôn viên trường
student digs (n): chỗ ở cho sinh viên = bedsit

2. Tell me about where you live.

My family has moved into the suburbs of the city. When we moved to the new house, we had a house-warming
party. It was just a couple of weeks ago.

the suburbs (n): ngoại ô

house-warming party (n): tiệc tân gia

3. What kind of accommodation do most people live in your city?

In the city, the majority of people stay in apartment blocks. That is far different from what I observe in England.
All of the British people I know seem to adore (thích) living in terraced houses with colorful and unusual back
gardens.

4. What kind of house or flat do you want to live in in the future?

In the future, I aspire to live in a cozy and sustainable house nestled amidst nature. Ideally, I envision a small

versatile area where we engage in various activities like watching movies, playing board games, or simply
having conversations.

atmosphere (n): bầu không khí

versatile (adj): linh hoạt

6. What's the difference between where you are living now and
where you have lived in the past?
The main difference between where I am living now and where I have lived in the past is the size and pace of
the city. Previously, I lived in a small town with a close-knit community and a slower lifestyle. The current city
I reside in is much larger, bustling with activity and offering a wider range of amenities and opportunities.

7. Can you describe the place where you live

I live in a cozy apartment located in a bustling residential area. It's a vibrant and diverse neighborhood with

interesting blend of old and new.”
diverse (adj): đa dạng
errand (n): việc vặt

8. Which room does your family spend most of the time in

My family spends most of our time in the living room. The room is furnished with comfortable sofas, a

space (đa chức năng)for relaxation, entertainment, and bonding. We gather in the living room to watch movies,
have conversations, and enjoy quality time together.
9. What's your favorite room in your apartment/house?
My favorite room in my apartment is definitely the living room. It serves as a versatile space(không gian linh
hoạt) here I can relax, entertain guests, and spend quality time with my family. The living room is tastefully
decorated (được trang trí đẹp) with comfortable seating, a cozy rug, and vibrant artwork on the walls. It's the
perfect spot (chỗ hoàn hảo)to unwind (thư giãn) after a long day, whether I'm reading a book or watching a
movie.

10. What makes you feel pleasant in your home?

In my home, several things make me feel pleasant. One of them is the cozy and inviting atmosphere. The soft
lighting, comfortable furniture, and warm colors create a soothing ambiance (không khí dễ chịu)that
immediately puts me at ease. Another aspect that brings me joy is the presence of personal touches(dấu ấn cá
nhân), such as family photographs, artwork, and sentimental objects (món đồ mang giá trị về tinh thần). They
remind me of cherished/fond memories ( kí ức tươi đẹp)and create a sense of belonging.
come blooding back : ùa về

11. What do you usually do in your house/fiat/room

In my flat, I engage in various activities depending on my schedule and mood. I often use it as a place for
relaxation and downtime. I enjoy reading books or watching movies and TV shows to unwind. Additionally, I
spend time cooking and experimenting with new recipes in my kitchen. I also utilize my flat for productivity,
working on assignments or pursuing personal projects.”

HOMETOWN

1. What is your hometown

Victoria is my hometown. It is a province located in the west of my country. It is a small province with slightly
more than 1 million people. It has a breathtaking view of picturesque landscapes with rolling mountains and
greenish lakes. However, due to the increasing economy, a number of businesses, especially in sugarcane, are
invested in my hometown making it very promising.

- I’m from Nha Trang, which is a beautiful coastal city located in Vietnam. Nha Trang is renowned for its
stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters( nước trong), and vibrant marine life. It’s a popular tourist destination in
my country, and I feel fortunate to call it my hometown. The combination of natural beauty, delicious seafood,
and a welcoming community makes Nha Trang a truly special place.

2. Is that a big city or a small place

My hometown isn’t a major city in Vietnam but it’s not small either. As far as I know, it has a population of 5
million people. So the urban area is always crowded with people. It’s also the largest city of the province by
land area.

3. How long have you been living there

- I had lived there for around 15 years before my family left for Santa City. It’s been more than ten years since I
left my hometown.

- I’ve been living in my hometown since I was born. I’ve never thought about leaving my hometown because
my entire social circle ( vòng tròn xã hội) is there and the cost of living is pretty low. However, I also want to
work in a different city for a few years to broaden my horizons.( mở rộng tầm nhìn/kiến thức/ chân trời)

4. Do you like your hometown

- Yes, I do like my hometown! I like the hospitality of people in my hometown. Also, everyone was willing to
give others a hand when they needed help.
- Honestly, I do take a lot of pride in being a citizen here. What I mean here is that I have all the modern
amenities such as, hospitals, parks, recreational centers and better job opportunities. Besides, I can witness the
evolution and development of my city with an array of skyscrapers(rất nhiều toà nhà cao tầng) and new
buildings have been built in recent years. I think it is true to say that this is the city that never sleeps.

5. What do you like (most) about your hometown

I’m from Bình Định, and what I love most about my hometown is its stunning beaches. The serene coastal areas
(vùng biển thanh bình), like Quy Nhơn Beach, offer a peaceful escape from city life. The unspoiled beauty and
delicious seafood make it a perfect place for relaxation and enjoyment.

6. Is there anything you dislike about it

While I adore my hometown of Bình Định for its natural beauty and tranquility, there are a few aspects I’m not
particularly fond of. One of the challenges is the limited employment opportunities, which often lead many
young people, including friends of mine, to seek better job prospects (triển vọng việc làm)in larger cities.

Do you like living there

Please describe your hometown a little
Do you think you will continue living there for a long time
THE AREA YOU LIVE IN
1. Do you like the area that you live in?
My living place is in the city’s downtown area. Well, there are several tasty restaurants around my apartment,
which is great for a foodie like me. And we also have a giant grocery store (tiệm tạp hóa khổng lồ) across the
street and a small park nearby. So I have to say it’s a pretty livable place.

100% yes. I have everything I need right in my neighborhood. SInce I was born and raised here in Ho Chi Minh
city, I love the food, the people and all of the conveniences we have here. It is also one of the most worth-living
city( thành phố đáng sống) in Vietnam with many career opportunities and fascinating entertaining services.
( dịch vụ giải trí hấp dẫn) I just can’t imagine the day that I have to move to anywhere else.

2. What are the changes of surroundings around your living place?

-Well, When it comes to the changes to my neighborhood over the past few years, I think there’ve been
more high-rise buildings( những tòa nhà cao tầng) built nearby so the area is denser than before. Besides, my
favorite improvement of this area is the building of an outdoor gym where I work out on a regular basis. (hàng
ngày)

- There have been some remarkable changes (thay đổi lớn)in this area. When I was a kid, there were some lakes
and paddle fields/paddy field (cánh đồng lúa) right in front of my house. The neighborhood was so deserted.
Then more and more immigrants from other provinces, even other cities, came and together we have built up
such a crowded, close-knit community now. Deserted: vắng vẻ

3. Do you know any famous people in the area you live in?
-No, I don’t know any famous people who live near me. It would be so cool to live near a celebrity. But as far
as I know, there aren’t any famous people around me. I’ll have to keep an eye out for. I would definitely love to
hang out with a celebrity.

- No, I don’t think public figures will choose to live in my neighborhood. Don’t get me wrong. It is still a lovely
place for me. But you know, celebrities love luxurious, top-class real estates. And my place is just a mid-tier
area. I have never seen any movie stars or famous singers close to my house.
Public figure = celebrity: người nổi tiếng
Luxuriou: sang trọng
Top-class: cao cấp
Real estate: bất động sản
Mid-tier: tầm trung

4. Where do you like to go to that area

-There’s actually a mall that’s not too far from my house. It’s only a ten-minute drive for me, which isn’t bad at
all. I like going there to hang out with my friends. Other than that, there’s a gym just down the road. I definitely
don’t go there as often as I thought.

- Well there is a brand new park close to my place. And that quickly become one of my favorite spots in the
area. I usually take a morning walk out there with my dog. It is pretty chilled in the morning, you know. The
atmosphere is super comfy and quiet. Sometimes I see a small group of elderly practicing tai chi. I just enjoy
being there alone, sitting on a couch. What a peaceful moment among the hustle and bustle of the city.
Elderly: người cao tuổi
Tai chi: Thái Cực Quyền
Hustle and bustle of the city: nhịp sống hối hả nơi thành thị

5. Do you think the place you are living at right now is suitable for a family with children?
Yes I do think so. I believe my neighbourhood is fairly safe and I live around the corner from a great elementary
school. It’s a top-notch school district. So there are a lot of families with kids in this neighbourhood already. I
moved here when I was a child myself. There are also beautiful parks near the neighborhood which are
awesome for kids.
TRANSPORT
1. How do you go to work/school?
Most days I will travel to school by riding a bike. My campus is huge (to), and it will take me more than 30
minutes to walk to the faculty building from my dorm. There are shared bikes that students can use at the front
entrance of my dorm building, which are very helpful.

- Well, I typically use public transport, specifically the bus. I find it super convenient because there’s a bus stop
right near my home. Plus, it’s an eco- friendly option and helps me avoid the morning rush hour. Occasionally,
when I’m in a hurry, I might hop on a bike.

2. What means of transport do you use when going for a trip from your workplace/school?
- Bikes and subways are among the most popular types of transportation because my hometown is a crowded
city where traffic is jammed all the time. It is much quicker to ride a bike to the subway station, take the
subway, then ride another bike to the destination than driving.

- In my hometown, the most popular means of transportation is motorcycles. They are incredibly versatile and
well-suited to navigate through the narrow streets and heavy traffic. Additionally, they are more affordable
compared to cars and offer a quick way to get around.

3. Is driving to work popular in your country?

- I study in a different province from my hometown. I’m not sure of the exact distance, but it takes about 5
hours to drive from my home to my university. Therefore, I live on campus during my studies.

- The distance from my home to my workplace/ school is approximately 10 kilometers. I usually cover this
distance in about 30 minutes by taking the subway. It’s a reasonable commute, and I find it quite manageable.

4. Do you think people will drive more in the future?

- I believe that with the continuous advancements in technology, there will be a shift towards more automated
forms of transportation. This means that in the future, people may rely less on driving themselves and more on
self-driving cars or other autonomous vehicles. This trend could lead to a decrease in individual car ownership
and a more efficient use of transportation resources.
- I reckon there’ll be a mix. With the surge in electric cars and advancements in sustainable vehicle technology,
some might be tempted to drive more. However, as cities get more congested and public transport improves,
many might lean away from personal cars.

How far is it from your home to work/school?

What is the most popular means of transportation in your hometown?

Clothing
1. What kind of clothes do you like to wear?
- I prefer to wear comfortable and casual clothes in my daily life. However, for special occasions or work-
related events, I do opt for (thich) smart and formal attire.

- I like to wear clothes that are minimalistic and simple. I prefer these types of clothing because they’re easy to
style and match with one another. I also love feminine clothing that comes with simple patterns like flowers or
hearts.

- I like to wear good-quality cotton t-shirts because of their soft and breathable texture, which adds extra
comfort to my skin. As a student, I’m busy with my studies and various projects every day, so dressing
comfortably is essential to me.

2. Do you prefer to wear comfortable and casual clothes or smart clothes?

- I wouldn’t say I spend a lot of time, but I do like to take some time to select the right outfit, especially when I
want to look my best. It’s important to me to feel confident in what I’m wearing.

- I prefer wearing comfortable and casual clothes because I feel more relaxed in them. I don’t normally dress in
smart clothes except for special occasions. I usually stick to casual clothes because they are cheap, practical,
and comfortable to wear when I’m out and about.

- I definitely lean more towards comfortable and casual for my everyday wear. Don’t get me wrong, dressing up
smartly for special occasions or important events is great, but on a typical day? Give me a pair of joggers and a
cozy sweater any day.

3. Do you like wearing T-shirts?

- Yes, I do enjoy wearing T-shirts, especially in warm weather. They are comfortable and versatile, and you can
find T-shirts with various designs and colors to suit different occasions.

- Yes, I much prefer T-shirts to collared shirts. My job has a smart-casual dress code, so we’re expected to wear
semi-formal shirts while in the office and during video calls. I don’t mind wearing them in winter, but during
summer, it can get unbearably hot wearing long-sleeve shirts. So, I get changed into a T-shirt the second I get
home after work. T-shirts are just so much more comfortable. Your arms aren’t restricted as much, you can feel
the cool, refreshing breeze on your skin, and you don’t really have to iron them! The only time I would
willingly wear formal shirts is if there is a special occasion, like at a wedding, a formal event or conference, or
for a job interview.

4. Do you spend a lot of time choosing clothes?

- Honestly? Not really. I’ve got a pretty good idea of what works for me, so most mornings, I can throw
something together fairly quickly. But I won’t deny, if there’s a special event or date night, I might take a little
longer, just to make sure I’m looking my best.
MAP
(look for, in great detail)

1. Do you often use maps?

- Yes, I find myself using maps quite frequently, especially when I’m exploring new places or trying to
find specific addresses. Maps help me navigate with ease.

- Yes, I do use maps quite frequently, especially when I’m in unfamiliar places or when I’m planning a
trip to a new location. It helps me get a sense of the area and find my way around.

2. How often do you use maps on your phone?

I use maps on my phone almost daily. Whether it’s for finding restaurants, getting to meetings, or simply
avoiding traffic, maps on my phone are incredibly useful and convenient.

3. Do you use paper map?

No, I don’t use paper maps because they are hard to understand and utilize. These maps don’t directly show you
the route to your destination. Instead, you need to figure out how to get from one place to another based on the
routes included on the map.

4. Do you have maps at home?

No, I don’t have any maps at home. I find that paper maps are difficult to use, and I usually stick to using the
maps and navigation apps on my phone. Thus, I don’t keep any physical maps as they will just add to the clutter
in my home.

5. Are you good at reading a map?

- I’m skillful in reading the paper map. It’s because I’m awful at directions and reading the map is really
doing my head in. But I should say, the navigation app in the smartphone is my savior. You know, it
shows my starting point, the route and even the arrival time, so it helps me to find the places everywhere
I go.
Chatting
1. Do you like chatting with friends?
Yeah, I love chit-chatting with friends cause it’s a great way to relax and socialize. Catching up with an old
friend every once in a while is always a pleasant and enjoyable experience. I find it refreshing to have
conversations with them, whether it’s talking about things going on in our lives, or future plans.

2. What do you usually chat about with friends?

I’ve got a lot of catching up to do with my friends. We have everything to talk about such as gossip, news about
our business and our families, or a good movie. I’m really enjoying it.

3. Do you prefer to chat with a group of people or with only one

friend?
I prefer to chat with only one friend, because I’m kind of like quiet. Staying with many people makes me
cranky. Besides, when there are lots of people, you will find that everybody is talking and laughing, and it’s not
conducive for free chit-chatting or heart-to-heart talks with someone that you trust.

4. Do you prefer to communicate face-to-face or via social media?

It depends. I prefer face-to-face communication with my friends for I really enjoy spending time with them.
However, for those who may not be familiar, I’d rather communicate with them through social media because
it’s quite awkward while sitting opposite one another chatting.

5. Do you argue with friends?

Well, disagreements happen from time to time cause my friends and I are all quite straightforward so we say
things directly and sometimes we could even get into a fight but that’s completely fine cause we won’t take it
personally. We always hear each other out and try to put ourselves in each other’s shoes.
Music Instruments
Have you ever learned to play a musical instrument?
- Oh yeah, back in the day, I dabbled a bit with the guitar. Took some lessons, tried to strum along to my
favorite tunes. I wasn’t half bad, but I wouldn’t say I was the next rockstar either. It was fun while it lasted!

-Yeah, I actually tried my hand at learning the guitar back in high school. My friend had an old acoustic guitar
that he let me borrow. I found some beginner chord charts online to practice with. For a while there, I was really
digging it – I’d sit in my room for hours trying to get the chord changes down and strumming along to songs.
Got some blisters on my finger from the strings. But I didn’t care. I even learned how to play a few tunes like
“Wonderwall” by Oasis and “Knockin” on Heaven’s Door.

What musical instruments do you enjoy listening to the most?

Well, If i have to choose one musical instrument that I enjoy listening to the most, it would probably be the
guitar. I’ve just always really dug the sound of a nicely played guitar you know. The way a skilled guitarist can
make it sing and sweep with emotion just really gets to me. Plus, so much of the music I’m into features killer
guitar playing whether it’s blues, folk, country, whatever. The guitar is just a versatile instrument and it adds
this extra layer of richness and soulfulness to the song, in my opinion. When a guitarist is really wailing, it just
gives me chills. The almighty guitar is definitely my favourite instrument to listen to. No doubt about it.

Do you think children should learn to play an instrument at school?

I mean learning an instrument is not something about should or shouldn’t. I think it definitely shouldn’t be
made into a compulsory course like something you know math or English or language which is rather required
for you to survive in this society. Instead, I think it should be made into an interest class that can provide the
students with a qualified course also with a relatively lower price. So if they want I think they can learn it. But if
they don’t, it’s not ok to force them to learn an instrument.

Do you think music education is important to children?

Definitely. Music education is so much more than just playing an instrument or singing. It fosters creativity,
improves memory, and teaches kids about different cultures through their musical heritage. It’s an all-round
booster for cognitive and emotional development. Every child should have the chance to experience it.
TEA AND COFFEE
The aroma of coffee beans/tea: hương thơm của trà và cà phê
hectic lives: cuộc sống bận rộn
coffee beverages: thức uống cà phê
1. Do people like tea and coffee nowadays?
Yes, most people tend to choose them as the go-to drinks, to soothe their hectic lives. Coffee is very popular
among young people. Drinking a cup of coffee must be the first thing in the morning and they also need it after
taking a nap in the afternoon, which is exactly what I do every day. As for tea, young people also like it, you
know, bubble tea, milk tea and suck like, while old people may prefer to drink it in a very traditional way: just
brew it and enjoy it.

2. Do you prefer to use tea or coffee to serve your guests?

In fact, I’m a coffee/tea buff and I’ve got my own coffee machine/tea set. Whenever my friends come over to
my house, I’d make coffee/tea for them. The aroma of coffee beans/tea is so refreshing and I think it’s a good
idea to spend quality time with my guests while drinking some coffee/tea.

-It’s really up to the guest. I have various types of tea at home, such as Chai, green tea, black tea, Thai tea, and
more. I also have an espresso machine with various capsules that can make iced or hot coffee beverages. If the
guest does not have a preference, I usually serve a latte as it’s well-liked by most people.

3. When was the last time you had a cup of coffee or tea?
Actually, I had coffee this morning, because I got up real early for my morning class and I’d get drowsy without
the coffee. This perfect pick-me-up is really a lifesavor.

4. Do you usually buy your coffee in a coffee shop?

Well, I usually buy coffee in a cafe with the right ambiance and photogenic interior design. There are just so
many cafés opening all over the city and a lot of them have high ratings on Yelp or have gone viral on social
media, so I’d love to fry them one by one. Sometimes if I‘m tied up with my schoolwork, I would order takeout
and have it delivered to my address.
FILMS
1. What films do you like?
I enjoy a wide range of films, from action-packed blockbusters to heartfelt dramas. Some of my favorites
include sci-fi movies like “Inception” and classic comedies like ” The Shawshank Redemption.” I also like
science fiction movies because they create a world that I cannot personally experience in real life and they often
spark my imagination about the future.

2. Did you often watch films when you were a child?

Yes, I was quite the movie enthusiast even as a child. I used to watch a lot of animated films and family-
friendly movies with my siblings. It was a cherished pastime for me. Recently, I still have these weekend movie
marathons where I binge on classics from the ’80s and ’90s.

3. Did you ever go to the cinema alone as a child?

Not that I remember. I usually went there with my family or friends. Going to the cinema was a special treat,
and it was more enjoyable to share the experience with my loved ones. I remember every time we went to the
cinema, it felt like an outing to me and we all looked forward to it.

Do you often go to the cinema with your friends?

Not that I remember. I usually went there with my family or friends. Going to the cinema was a special treat,
and it was more enjoyable to share the experience with my loved ones. I remember every time we went to the
cinema, it felt like an outing to me and we all looked forward to it. We quite often splash out on the more
luxurious, high-end cinemas where you can put your feet up in a reclinable chair and get food delivered as you
watch the movie.

Do you think going to the cinema is a good way to spend time with friends?
Yes, I think going to the cinema is a fantastic way to spend time with friends. It’s a social activity that allows
you to enjoy a film together and then discuss it afterward. It gives you a shared experience to talk about, and
you can even grab a meal or coffee to chat about the movie. It’s a fun and enjoyable way to bond with friends.
Running
1. Do you go running a lot?
-Yes, I do enjoy running, and I try to make it a regular part of my fitness routine. I usually go for a run at least
three to four times a week. It helps me stay in shape and relieves stress.

- Yes, I go running frequently. It has become an integral part of my daily routine. Running helps me stay fit and
maintain a healthy lifestyle. It improves my cardiovascular endurance, strengthens my muscles, and boosts my
energy levels.

2. Where do you usually go running?

- I typically go running in a nearby park in my neighborhood. It’s a lovely place with well-maintained jogging
tracks and a pleasant atmosphere. Running there allows me to connect with nature and enjoy some fresh air.

- I usually run on the treadmill at my gym because I can track my time, heart rate, and other health metrics
while running. Since I want to make my exercise as effective as possible, the gym is definitely the best place for
running.

3. When was the last time you went running?

The last time I went running was just yesterday morning. I find it most refreshing to start my day with a good
run. It was a beautiful day, and I covered around 5 kilometers during my jog.

4. What do you think of running as a sport?

-Running is a fantastic sport, in my opinion. It’s accessible to almost everyone, requires minimal equipment,
and offers numerous health benefits. It’s not only a great way to improve physical fitness but also helps in
maintaining mental well-being. Moreover, it can be a solitary or social activity, depending on your preference,
making it a versatile and enjoyable sport for people of all ages and fitness levels.

- I believe running is an excellent sport. It’s accessible to people of all fitness levels, and you don’t need any
special equipment other than a good pair of running shoes. It’s a great way to improve cardiovascular fitness,
build endurance, and burn calories. Additionally, it can be done alone or with others, making it a versatile
activity.
Robots
1. Are robots important?
Definitely, robots are making a huge difference to the world and really plays an essential role nowadays. They
are being used as labour saving devices in various industries. Such as manufacturing, agriculture and even space
exploration.

2. Would robots affect people's lives?

Yes, I think robots can affect people’s lives in both a positive and negative way. Robots can make the lives of
humans easier by handling simple tasks and processes. However, it can also reduce the number of available jobs
for certain groups of people like factory workers.

3. Have you ever watched a movie about robots?

I can’t call myself a big fan of Sci-Fi movies, I must have watched some which showed robots. The one that
comes to my mind just now is a British show called humans. In this movie, the human-like robots are employed
as domestic servants in houses and they even have feelings.

4. Should we let a robot drive for us for long journeys?

Even though I’ve said that I am all for the ideas that we need more robots to help us out in daily lives. I don’t
think we should ride cars driven by robots. As I’ve been reading articles about huge tech names developing self-
driving cars. It seems that there’re still some limitations and potential dangers. So I believe that we should more
cautious.

5. What can robots do for you at home?

There’s a wide range of chores robots can do for me. For Instance, they can help me clean up the room, do
laudry, cook dinner etc. I would love to sitdown, put my feet up, watch some shows while someone or how do I
put, something helps out.
GIFTS
1. Have you ever sent handmade gifts to others?
- No, not really. To be honest, i’m not much of DIY person. So I haven’t really sent any handmade gifts to my
friends. I mean, I do appreciate the effort and thought that goes into making something by hand. But it’s just not
my thing. I usually prefer to buy gifts or find other ways to show them that i care. After all, it’s the thought that
counts right.

- Yes, I have! I find handmade gifts to be more heartfelt and unique. It’s a way to add a personal touch and
show the person that I really care. Plus, the process of making the gift itself is quite enjoyable and therapeutic.

2. Have you ever received a great gift?

- Yes, absolutely. My friends all know me so well, and they know exactly what i like. Just recently, they blew
me away with the most incredible gift, a lotso-shaped necklace. They all knew how much of a fan i’m of lotso.
Well, actually, this necklace was something that i had always wanted. So, when they surprised me with it, i was
over the moon. Having such amazing friends in my life who always go out of their ways to make me feel so
special is truly a blessing

- Yes, I’ve received great gifts several times. One of the best gifts l’ve ever received was a beaded handbag that
my best friend made from scratch. She put many hours into making that bag, and I was extremely touched and
grateful when she gifted it to me.

3. What do you consider when choosing a gift?

I would make this really complicated calculation in my mind. I always consider the person's interests as well as
his socio-economic status. What do I mean by that? Well, if my friend is more wealthy, I wouldn't consider
anything cheap. I would have to meet the expectations. If my friend was just married or had his first child, I'd
consider something around those facts, and so on. I try to be thoughtful when buying gifts.

When selecting a gift, I take into account the recipient’s interests, hobbies, and preferences. I also think about
the occasion and the relationship I share with the person. It’s important to choose something meaningful and
appropriate. Additionally, I consider the budget to ensure it’s within my means.
4. Do you think you are good at choosing gifts?
-Yes, i believe that i have a knack for picking out gifts. Instead of going for flashy or pricey options, i tend to
send my friends practical and functional gifts that really hit the sport. For instance, i would like to choose a
bottle of perfume or a stunning necklace that complements their style or even something they have been eyeing
on their wish list for a long period. Of course, it takes time to choose the perfect gift. But when i see the big
smile on their face, it’s all worth it and makes me feel like i’ve done a great job.

- I'm very hit-and-miss. As I said earlier, I am trying to give thoughtful, practical gifts, but sometimes that's not
what excites a person the most. Like, If I bought something useful for the family, but didn't consider just the
person as an individual, then that person might not be so excited about the gift. It is difficult to balance at times,
and of course, at times I buy a gift that the person already has. That has happened before and it is a little
disappointing for sure.

- I believe I’m quite skilled at selecting gifts. I make an effort to pay attention to the details and sentiments that
matter to the recipient. While there may be occasional misses, I generally strive to choose gifts that reflect
thoughtfulness and consideration for the person’s tastes and interests.

5. Is gift-giving important in your culture?

-I'd say it's quite important, yes. When we think about gift-giving, we always think about those wonderful
moments around big public holidays such as Christmas, or our birthdays. At that time, it's almost mandatory to
prepare a gift for our close relatives or friends. But gift-giving goes beyond that. When young people build
relationships, exchanging small or medium-sized presents is a fantastic way to enhance that relationship. The
gift itself doesn't matter so much, but the action and the attitude is what sticks.
HELPING OTHERS
1. Do you usually help people around you?
-Yeah, I try to help others whenever I can. It's like a simple way to make a positive impact on someone's day or
situation. Whether it's lending a hand with a task, offering advice, or just being there to listen, I think helping
others is a fundamental part of being human.

- Yes, I do whenever I can. I think I’m an empathetic (showing an ability to understand and share the feelings of
another) person as I easily feel sorry for those people who are in need. Well, I do help my friends when money
is tight for them, I donate something in kind (given in goods or commodities instead of money) to homeless
people, and, of course, I help my family or relatives in different ways.

2. How do you help people around you, such as neighbors, family, and friends?

3. Do your parents teach you how to help others?

- Yeah, my parents played a big role in teaching me the value of helping others. They led by example, always
ready to lend a hand to friends, neighbors, or even strangers in need. It was like a lesson in empathy and
kindness that stuck with me.

- When I was young, my parents always taught me being kind and helpful leading by example , such as
watching neighbors’ homes while away, or even just providing a listening ear when needed. Because of them, I
learned how to help others and appreciate the value of sharing as well.

4. Did your parents help you a lot when you were young?
Yeah, my parents were always there to help me when I was young. From the basics like feeding me, dressing
me, and making sure I was safe, to helping with schoolwork and guiding me through life's challenges, they were
my go-to support system. My parents have always been there to guide me through life's challenges, offering
wisdom and encouragement when I needed it most

5. What have you done to help the elderly?

I've done a few things to help the elderly in my community. One of the simplest ways is by offering to run
errands for them, like grocery shopping or picking up prescriptions. It's a small gesture that can make a big
difference, especially for those who may have mobility issues. I need to run a few errands today, like going to
the post office and picking up some groceries.

Run errands: Làm việc vặt, chạy việc vặt

FISHING
1. Is fishing popular in your country?
-Yes, fishing is quite popular in Vietnam among certain groups of people. I guess since we have many rivers,
lakes and costal areas, fishing can be easily accessed by people who live nearby. In Vietnam, most people enjoy
fishing either as a relaxing activity or as a means of living.

- In Vietnam, people, the youth in particular, are hooked by fishing. I guess, that’s because we do have lots of
rivers, ponds and lakes, providing great places for fishing. But beyond that, more people take fishing as a
hobby, since it’s a great way to connect with nature and free themselves away from hectic work schedule.

- Well, I am not sure, but from what I’ve observed, fishing has always been popular, but not on a large scale.
However, I do notice that it has gone viral among middle-aged men. Interestingly enough, they either wake up
at the crack of dawn or even stay up late still midnight, find a river or lake in the city and spend hours alone
fishing. I guess, just like some people suddenly start to show passion for running marathons, fishing is also one
of the activities that allow them to indulge in a world on their own without worrying about reality, like a way to
deal with midlife crisis. As for me, I still cannot figure out why people just can stand or sit there for hours
without moving. That sounds so torturing.

2. Do you like eating fish?

-Yes, absolutely. I always have a preference for fish and shrimps over chicken or beef. I enjoy fresh fish when
it’s cooked properly, and my mom is good at cooking fish. These days, I have to cook for myself, and I love
grilled salmon since it’s easy to prepare and nutritious.

- Yes, I enjoy eating fish. I heard from my mom that it is a good source of protein and is also rich in omega-3
fatty acids, which are beneficial for heart health. Fish tastes great as well and I know there are many delicious
ways to prepare fish, such as grilling, baking, or frying.

-Absolutely, I am a big fan of fish. As I am a gym freak and addicted to building muscles, fish is definitely a
great source of protein. Mv favorite is salmon which is rich in Omega-3, it’s tasty, easy to cook and gives me a
sharper mind. – Not really, fish is not my cup of tea, although I was always told that eating fish can make me
smarter. I still can’t tolerate the smell of it, and also I am such an impatient person, picking up fishbones would
drive me crazy. I would rather take fish oil pill on a daily basis to balance my diet.

3. Have you ever been to a place where there are lots of fish around you?
- I do have been to places where there are lots of fish around. For example, I’ve visited aquariums many times
and diving in areas with diverse marine life. It’s not easy to describe what I’m feeling in the moment, just so
fascinating to see various species of fish swimming around and observing their behavior in their natural
habitats.

- Yeah, I have been to an aquarium a while a go with my friends. It was my first time getting closer to marine
animals. I was fascinated by how extraordinary the fish is, some of them are extremely big, some of them have
stunning colored scales. I even screamed when they swam up above my head. I wish I could learn diving so that
I could get even closer to those beautiful creatures again.

4. Have you seen any movies with lots of fish?

-Well, yes! The first one that comes to my mind is Finding Nemo. It is a movie about the undersea adventures
of a clownfish called Nemo. I watched it when I was really young. Even though I can’t recall the details of the
movie now, I still vividly remember the vibrant undersea world it portrayed.

- Sure. When I was young, I watched a movie called Finding Nemo. It’s an animated film that tells the story of
the clownfish named Marlin who, along with his friend named Dory, searches for his abducted son Nemo all the
way to Sydney Harbour. In this movie I saw lots of fish. By the way, I really recommend that you check out this
movie.
GEOGRAPHY
How do you like geography?
Do you think geography is useful?
Have you ever learned geography?
Do you want to be a geography teacher?

1. How do you like Geography?

- I don’t like geography. The geographical terms are quite abstract and hard to understand. It is a real pain in the
neck.

- To me, this subject is like an eye-opener. It just explains a lot of mysterious phenomenons in this world like
how the icebergs are formed, where the water comes from, and how the latitude and landform affect the local
climate.

2. Do you think Geography is useful?

- I don’t know what people think about it, but geography is not my thing. It’s kind of boring, all about
geographical nouns, and names of rail routes. I rarely use geographical knowledge in my everyday life. While,
people around me believed that learning geography helps them know much more about the world.

- Absolutely! Geography is incredibly useful in many ways. It is indispensable in daily life. For instance, we all
need some basic concepts of direction to navigate through different places. It also plays a vital role in urban
planning. Moreover, learning geography opens one’s mind and helps us see a more diversified planet.

3. Have you ever studied geography at school?

- I had a class called Geography back in high school, which involved many different areas, and memorizing
names of places. But I was completely uninterested in it. Sample 2: Well, geography was a compulsory subject
at my primary school, so I think I started to learn it in Grade 2. I have learned both national geography and
world geography. I just remember that at that time there were a great deal of names to memorise, the mountains,
the rivers,… etc, not a pleasant experience for me.

- Of course. it was a compulsory course back in high school. We had to rack our brains to memorize the names
of the capitals. But the cultural part was really engaging for me, and it offers an avenue to broaden my horizon.
4. Do you want to be a Geography teacher? Sample 1: Being a geographical teacher means that I need to have
excellent knowledge of the subject, help students learn about the Earth and its features and develop lesson plans
so I can present lessons to my students in an engaging manner. This job is just too hard for me, so of course, I
don’t want to be a geography teacher.

5. Did you study Geography at school? Sample 1: Yes, I did study geography at school, and it used to be one of
my favorite subjects. We can never underestimate the value of Geography as it gives us insights into our
world’s landscapes, climates, and cultures and helps us understand our planet better.

6. Do you like geography?

That’s a tricky one to answer, I’d have to say yes and no. As much as I find the world captivating and exciting, I
can’t say that studying rocks and landforms gets me going. Don’t get me wrong, I love travelling and I’m often
awestruck by the sheer scale of the imposing mountain ranges where I go hiking. But these days, there are so
many potential interests and hobbies vying for your attention, one has to be quite discerning with their time.
Otherwise, you’ll fall down the rabbit hole of novelties and starting new pursuits, without ever mastering any of
them.

Would you visit a country because of its geographical location?

-Yeah, I’m always curious about the places I’m not very familiar with and the special geographical location
makes it more mysterious. And Egypt must be the one. The desert there is so impressive. And apart from that, if
I go to the country near the sea like Thailand, then I just have the chance to taste the local delicacy.
NOISE
1. Do you like to stay in a place with a lot of noise?
Of course not. For one thing, if I stay with my friends like in a noisy restaurant, I need to raise my voice to let
my friends hear me. It’s the same thing to my friends. So it could be exhausting. Also, If I just want to take a
break or have a good rest, too much noise will be totally a disaster.

- No, I prefer quiet and peaceful environments. Excessive noise can be distracting and stressful for me. I find it
easier to concentrate and relax in quieter surroundings. Whether at home or while studying, a calm atmosphere
allows me to be more productive and at ease

2. What kinds of noises are there in the area where you live?
-The first kind of noise I can think of is the sound from construction sites, you know, like from the diggers and
bulldozers. What’s even worse, some outdoor commercial performances can drive people nuts because of the
deafening music.

-Well, in my neighborhood, we have occasional traffic noise, and sometimes dogs barking can be a bit
bothersome, but we're all pretty understanding. It's all part of community life, and we find ways to cope and get
along.
barking (n): tiếng sủa
bothersome (adj): phiền phức, khó chịu
cope (v): đối phó

3. What kind of noise do cars make?

When drivers start the engine, there’s gonna be the noise. And things get worse when they honk their horns on
the street, which can be really annoying. In some cases, like if a driver hits the brake, the screech just freaks
people out.

4. Do you want to move to a quieter place?

Not really. While the noise can be a bit much sometimes, I've grown attached to my neighborhood. I appreciate
the vibrancy and convenience it offers. Plus, it's where my friends and community are, so I'm happy right where
I am.
grow attached to: dần gắn bó
vibrancy (n): sự sống động

5. Do you think there is too much noise in today's world?

- Generally speaking, Yes. But i depends on what kind of place you’re living in. Like if you live in a
Metropolis, you will definitely hear a lot of noise coming from all kinds of things like people chatting and the
traffic and even the machines in the factory. However, If you live in the countryside, you probably will not be
bothered by the noise.

- Yes, I believe there is an increasing amount of noise in today's world. With the constant buzz of technology,
urban environments, and social media, it's challenging to find moments of quiet and solitude. This noise can be
overwhelming and impact our well-being."
buzz (n): tiếng ồn (tiếng vù vù)
urban (adj): (thuộc về) đô thị
well-being (n): sức khỏe

6. Is making noise one of people's rights?

-Well, as a normal person, it’s natural for you to make sounds every day because you need to walk, speak and
move of course. However, in modern society, people agree on certain rules of politeness. Like in a public
occasion, you are not allowed to disturb others. So, it depends on what kind of noise you make and where you
make it.

-Making noise can be considered a right, but it should be controlled. Everyone has the freedom to express
themselves and engage in activities that may produce noise. However, it should be balanced with consideration
for others, leading to noise regulations and etiquettes."
consideration (n): sự quan tâm
regulation (n): quy định

is what life is all about.
I’ve been crazy about it
have to put off all my upcoming travels due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
I think that travelling is a great way to explore new places and cultures.
It’s not just about visiting tourist attractions or ticking off destinations from a list.
It’s about the experience of stepping out of my comfort zone and embracing the unknown
travel far and wide to experience new things.
Im not much of a traveler
overcome the post-holiday blues.
brings me a lot of happiness and fulfilment.

Do you like travelling?

- Yes, of course. You know, since I'm always swamped with work and deadlines, traveling to a new place is an
optimal choice for me to get away from the mundane day-to-day routine. I would love to take a small trip to
some coastal cities where I can enjoy the scenic landscapes and be with nature. And who knows, I can even
learn something new after those trips.
Swamped with work and deadlines: ngập trong công việc và deadline.
Mundane day-to-day routine (noun phrase): công việc hàng ngày.
Learn something new (v): học những thứ gì mới.

-Absolutely! It’s one of my favourite things to do. I try to go on three to four trips every year. It’s not just about
visiting tourist attractions or ticking off destinations from a list. It’s about the experience of stepping out of my
comfort zone and embracing the unknown. l enjoy the anticipation and the sense of adventure that comes with
each new journey, and I always look forward to my next trip.

How often do you go travelling?

I try to travel whenever I can. Ideally, I plan a big trip once or twice a year. However, I also like going on short
trips more frequently, perhaps every few months to satisfy my curiosity and wanderlust.

Where do you usually travel?

Well, I don’t have a specific place that I tend to travel to. I like to keep things interesting by exploring different
destinations each time I plan a trip. Sometimes, I find myself drawn to bustling cities with vibrant street life and
iconic landmarks. Other times, I prefer the tranquility of natural surroundings, like mountains, beaches, or
forests. For me, each destination holds its unique charm and I am always excited to explore new conners of the
world.

- From ancient wonders to modern marvels, there is no shortage of incredible places to explore in Vietnam

How do you feel when you are travelling?

-Oh, I absolutely feel thrilled. You know, it’s a feeling of excitement and joy that can’t easily put into words.
For me, traveling is a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and enjoy my time. In fact, after

while on holiday. It always takes me several days to overcome the post-holiday blues.

might overlook. This comes in handy when I need to recall information for various purposes.

2. Have you ever forgotten something that was important?

-Oh, sure, all the time! I’m constantly forgetting people’s birthdays, forgetting about meetings, and all sorts of
other slip-ups. I try to avoid forgetting important things by noting them down in my calendar, but it’s definitely
not a foolproof system. I’ve still forgotten a bucketload of important things that I later noticed had been entered
into my calendar.

- Oh, definitely! I think we've all had those moments. I once forgot my passport before a trip and had to rush
back home to get it. It was quite a scare, but it taught me the importance of double-checking and being more
organized.
double-check (v): kiểm tra lại, kiểm tra kỹ
organized (adj): ngăn nắp, gọn gàng

3. What do you need to remember in your daily life?

In my daily life, I don’t consciously try to remember specific things; it all just flows naturally for me. Whether
it’s tasks, appointments, or details, my mind tends to grasp and retain information effortlessly. It’s like a built-in
system that keeps everything in check without much conscious effort on my part.

4.How do you remember important things?

I we’re talking about daily trivialities, l often rely on a common method, that is, making to-do lists. But when it
comes to memorizing a large amount of information, I would try mind maps. I think they are quite helpful and
handy because they show the structure and major points clearly, which makes it easier to remember. Plus, I’ll
have a nightly review of my daytime activities to help me keep track of is everything.
Is there an advertisement that made an impression on you when you were a child?
Absolutely, there was this one advertisement for a chocolate brand that really stuck with me. It featured a
whimsical, magical chocolate factory and had this catchy jingle that I used to hum all the time. It wasn’t just the
chocolate that appealed to me as a child; it was the whole fantastical world they created. That ad certainly had a
knack for captivating a young audience.

Do you see a lot of advertising on trains or other transport?

There’s been a noticeable increase in advertising on public transport. Whether it’s public awareness campaigns,
subtle product promotions, or general marketing, it’s become so ubiquitous that it blends into our daily lives. I
only tend to take notice when they switch things up. The sudden brightness might catch my eye, but soon
enough, it fades into the background again.

Do you like advertisements?

I have mixed feelings for advertisements. On one hand, they can be informative and creatively inspiring,
showcasing clever ideas and new products. On the other hand, they can be intrusive, especially when they’re
overly persistent or irrelevant to my interests. So, it really depends on the context and the quality of the
advertising.

What kind of advertising do you like?

I have a particular fondness for witty and innovative ads that tell a story or present a message in a unique way.

balance between being persuasive and being engaging.

games. For one thing, l’m not interested in video games and I don’t feel involved. For another, others are fully
engaged in the game and I don’t want to bother or distract them.

Do you think people spend too much time playing video games?
Totally. People do waste too much of their valuable time playing video games. Each match, lasting
approximately 30-45 minutes, can lead to a cycle of wanting to win after a loss and seeking additional victories
after a win. So, people can find themselves spending over 3 hours a day on gaming which equals to roughly
1,000 hours a year. They can engage in so many more meaningful activities with that much time!

Do you prefer playing video games alone or with others?

times when the routine or lack of stimulating tasks leads to a sense of boredom.

weekends with no plans or during downtime at work when there are no challenging assignments, I might
experience boredom.

What do you do when you feel bored?

Like most people, I just scroll through my social media feeds to recharge my batteries. But one thing I have
done recently is to grab a coffee myself, partly because I need the pick-me-up drink but also because the five-
minute stroll can just allow me to relax a bit.

Do you think childhood is boring or adulthood is boring?

I think adulthood is boring. most children are happy-go-lucky, they find everything interesting and curious
about everything around them. But when it comes to adulthood, most people just feel the pressure of being
grown-ups. Some of them may gradually lose their lust for life because jobs or money start to dominate their
life.
CROWDED PALACE

Yes, the city where I live is relatively crowded. It’s a bustling urban center with a dense population, especially
in the downtown areas and commercial districts.

Certainly, there is a bustling market just a short distance from where I live. It’s a popular shopping destination,
and the streets are often filled with people, creating a lively and energetic atmosphere.

3. Do you like crowded places?

I have a mixed opinion about crowded places. While I appreciate the vibrancy and energy of busy areas, I also
value moments of tranquility. It depends on the context; for social events or shopping, a lively atmosphere is
enjoyable, but for relaxation, quieter spaces are preferable.

people celebrating, enjoying street performances, and exploring various stalls, It was a festive and vibrant

- The last time I found myself in a crowded place was just last weekend at a local food market. The aisles were
packed with people exploring the various food stalls, offering everything from artisan bread to exotic street
food. Navigating through the crowd was a bit of a challenge, but the lively atmosphere and the tantalizing
aromas made it an enjoyable experience.

-I wouldn’t say I’m an avid collector, but I do have a penchant for collecting books. My bookshelf is a
testament to my love for literature, with an eclectic mix of classic novels, contemporary fiction, and some non-
fiction thrown into the mix. There’s something about the feel and smell of books that I find incredibly
appealing. Plus, they’re a great conversation starter when people visit.

- No, now I don’t collect anything, because I am not very into any particular things. But when I was a kid, I
used to collect stamps, because at that time, collecting stamps was the thing, so I was jumping on a bandwagon
but later I did not find it interesting anymore

Are there any things you keep from childhood?

Yes, I’ve held onto a few cherished items from my childhood. One of them is a well- worn teddy bear, which
was my constant companion growing up. Another is a collection of football stickers – I was quite the enthusiast
back then. These items hold a lot of sentimental value for me, serving as tangible links to my past.

Would you keep old things for a long time? Why?

Keeping old things can be a double-edged sword. On one hand, they can be wonderful mementos that hold
precious memories and offer a sense of continuity with our past. On the other hand, holding onto too many
things can lead to clutter and may prevent us from embracing the present fully. It’s important to strike a
balance, preserving those items that have genuine significance while letting go of what no longer serves us.

Where do you usually keep things you need?

I’m a bit of an organization enthusiast, so I have specific places for everything. Daily essentials like keys and
wallets have their dedicated spot near the entrance of my home. This way, I avoid the morning scramble. For
work-related items, I have a home office setup where everything is within arm’s reach, ensuring efficiency and
minimizing distractions.

everything. So, I’m trying my best to eat in moderation and trying curb my cravings. I only allow myself to eat
cakes on those special occasions like a birthday party, public holiday, some festivals, occasion like that.

such a wide variety of flavors and styles that there’s always something for everyone.

forbade me to eat alot. Hm come to think of it that’s probably when my addiction to cakes began.

3. Can you make cakes?

Well, to be honest, I don’t have the hand-on capabilities of baking a cake. Because i think it is a time-
consuming and complex process. I prefer buying them in a bakery shop instead. However, if i can find the
recipe online or from my favourite vloger, i don’t think it will be a challenging thing for me to bake a cake at
home provided that i have the essential appliances in the kitchen such as an oven and electrical mixer and so.

4. Are there any traditional Vietnamese cakes?

Sure, we have various traditional Vietnamese cakes. Using moon cakes as an example, moon cakes are the
special food we eat during the Mid-Autumn Festival. Typical moon cakes are round pastries with rich fillings
usually made from red bean or lotus seed paste. Some may even contain yolks from salted duck eggs.

5. Do you like to have some desserts after meals?

Actually, when I’m done, I don’t want anything. But sometimes, I do satisfy my post-dinner sweet tooth with a
bit of ice cream or a piece of pumpkin pie.
COLOUR
1. What is your favourite colour?
-Well my go-to color is definitely green. This is because I have been painting everything green since I was a
kid. And also, this color is very easy on the eye.
go-to (adj) ưa thích
easy on the eye (phrase) ưa nhìn

-My favorite color is blue. There's just something calming and serene about it. Whether it's the sky or the ocean,
blue always resonates with me. Plus, it pairs well with many other colors, making it versatile and appealing in
various contexts.
serene (adj): thanh bình
resonate with (phrasal v): có ý nghĩa, vang vọng, cộng hưởng

- I really like blue. It’s a very calming colour, and it comes in so many different shades . Blue also reminds me
of lots of things in nature, like the sky and the ocean. Plus, it’s a good colour to wear because it matches with a
lot of different ones.

2. What is the colour you dislike? Why?

- I’m into quite a few applications, especially ones that inform me about my health like how long I have walked
a day or Loud ones like red, yellow or orange, I guess. This is due to the fact that I have never looked great in
these colors. They don’t really compliment my complexion so well, and I just wonder how others can still pull
these colors off!
loud colors: màu nổi (đỏ, vàng, cam,…)
to compliment one’s complexion: tôn lên nước da
to pull them off: hợp (mặc các màu đó vẫn hợp)

- I don’t like orange that much. I don’t think that it looks good with many other colours. And personally, it
doesn’t look good with my skin tone. So in a practical sense, orange is kind of useless to me. But I also don’t
think it’s that nice to look at.

3. What colour do your friends like most?

My friends tend to like bright, warm colours. They like red, green, and yellow, which are usually summery
colours. During the fall, they like to wear clothes in neutral tones like black, brown, and white. But they
decorate their rooms with all kinds of colours. They’re not very picky when it comes to that sort of thing.

4. What colour makes you uncomfortable in your room?

I think purple really annoys me. Believe it or not, I have been to one of my friends’ houses and he painted his
room with this color. I felt so nauseous that I had to leave after a few minutes there. If I had to live in a purple
room, it would be nightmarish!
nauseous (adj) nôn nao
nightmarish (adj) ác mộng

I don’t think I would like a room that was painted lime green . To me, it’s too bright and bold. It’s harsh on the
eyes and it would be uncomfortable to see that everywhere. Another bad colour for a room would be black. I
think that would feel really dark and creepy .
SOCIAL MEDIA

1. When did you start using social media?

Well, if I remember correctly, it was in middle school that I first used social media. At that time, I was staying
in a boarding school, my parents thought it would be a good idea to let me have a smartphone and a WeChat
account so that I can stay connected with them.

2. Do you think you spend too much time on social media?

- To tell the truth, I do feel that I spend too much time on social media. It’s easy to lose track of time in the
endless contents and notifications. I often find myself scrolling on my phone for hours without realizing how
much time has passed. I’m trying to be more careful and I will set limits for myself.

- There was a time when I got a little addicted to social media. I could clearly feel my attention span was
narrowing and I even got restless if I didn’t check the social media for a while. Then I told a friend of mine
about this problem and she suggested I should uninstall all of the social apps on my smartphone. It was really
hard at the beginning. I tried to occupy myself with anything but fiddling with my phone. Now I can confidently
say I’ve got rid of social media addiction.

an indispensable part of our daily lives.
SUNGLASSES
1. Do you often wear sunglasses?
- Yes, I do wear sunglasses quite regularly, especially when the sun decides to grace us here in London. They’re
essential during summer or on those rare sunny winter days. Not only do they protect my eyes, but they also add
a touch of style to my outfit. You’ll often find me with a pair in my bag, just in case the sun makes an
unexpected appearance.

- I don’t wear sunglasses very often, only really when the sun is particularly glaring. I’m quite selective about
when to wear them because l prefer to enjoy natural light. However, on those bright, sunny days or when l’m
driving against the strong sunlight, I find them absolutely necessary to shield my eyes and improve visibility.

2. Do you spend a lot of money on sunglasses?

- I don’t tend to splurge excessively on sunglasses. While I appreciate the craftsmanship of high-end brands, I
find that moderately priced ones often do the job just as well. It’s more about finding a pair that’s comfortable
and suits my face shape. Plus, considering how easy it is to misplace them, I think it’s more sensible to go for
something mid-range.

find that moderately priced ones often do the job just as well. It’s more about finding a pair that’s comfortable
and suits my face shape. Plus, considering how easy it is to misplace them, I think it’s more sensible to go for
something mid-range.

3. Do you give sunglasses as gifts?

Sunglasses can be a great gift, provided you know the person’s style and preferences well. It’s a thoughtful and
practical present, especially for someone who enjoys outdoor activities or fashion. However, the tricky part is
choosing a frame that matches their face shape and style, so it does require a bit of insight into their personal
taste.

4. Have you ever lost your sunglasses?

I’m cautious about giving sunglasses as gifts because choosing the right pair can be quite personal. The style,
fit, and preference vary greatly from person to person, and what suits one might not suit another. Unless I know
someone’s specific taste or they’ve mentioned a particular pair they like, I tend to opt for other gifts.
MONEY

1. How do you save money?

When I started working, I have opened a saving account and each month, as long as I get my paycheck, I set
aside a couple of hundred to a few thousand yuan and save them in the account. On top of that, I never spend on
things I can’t afford or don’t need. By spending wisely, I feel encouraged to replenish my funds, which in turn
leads to a cycle of earning and saving. However, my main focus now is to improve my income-earning potential
rather than figuring out how to save a bit more money.

2. What do you think about payment apps or mobile payments?

Payment apps and mobile payment are helpful, efficient and convenient to use. Digital payment makes cashless
transactions possible and it speeds up the paying process. What’s more, payment apps give me instant access to
things I need to buy even though I go out without my wallet.

3. Do you use a credit card to buy things?

-Yes, I try to use a credit card more often nowadays than payment apps, mainly for two reasons. First, credit
cards often offer cashback programs, allowing me to save some money on purchases. Second, taking out a
credit card is still more work than using my phone to pay; this effectively allows me to reconsider my purchase
decision.

- I hardly use credit card except in special cases: It is easy to develop bad habits like overspending or impulse
consumption. As l get used to using credit cards, as long as I get paid, the first thing I have to do is to pay bills.
You know stress and I don’t want to be those people that can’t save money.

4. Do you think cash will still be popular in the future?

Not really. I think many governments around the world are trying to phase out cash, including China, because
people are simply not using that much cash anymore. However, I do still keep some change on me just in case I
run into situations where I can only pay by cash.
SINGING
1. Do you like singing? Why?
–Yeah, I love to sing after work coz I’m a music fancier. You know, I hum the song along with the music and
sometimes I just feel my singing skill is terrific. And another reason is, singing is a great way to unwind and
bond with my friends. I often sing the high notes with them, using some kind of apps. And singing to our hearts’
content really makes us feel like we’re on top of the world.

- Yes, I actually took music lessons during my primary and secondary school years. However, if I have a
chance, I’ll definitely join another singing class. I was told that I had no sense of rhythm, so hopefully one day
I’ll stop being this tone deaf and know how to hit the right note.

Rhythm (noun): nhịp điệu

tone deaf (noun): không có khả năng hát đúng âm điệu
hit the right note: hát đúng

–Nope. I can hardly carry a tune when I sing, and my voice breaks on high notes. I always find it difficult to
breath properly when singing, you know, often running out of breath. I wouldn’t say I’ve got a talent for
singing.

2. Have you ever learnt how to sing?

–No, I haven’t taken any singing lessons so far coz I don’t plan to be a professional singer in the future. Well I
should say, I’m definitely gonna know the singing techniques, like how to make melodious sounds and how to
avoid singing out of tune, but the point is, I’ve already been used to singing songs on my own way. Thinking
about the skills in the whole process is really annoying.

–Yes, I have. Every child in China takes music lessons in primary school/ kindergarten. If my memory serves
me right, we started to learn singing at pretty young age. I’ve forgotten most of what I learnt though.

3. Who do you want to sing for?

Well, most of the time I just sing for myself. The only exception being my close friends who can tolerate my
horrific voice which always runs out of breath and breaks on high notes whenever we have virtual karaoke
nights. Otherwise, I would never sing in public since it is the most embarrassing thing in the world.

tolerate (verb): chịu đựng

horrific (adj): đáng sợ
run out of breath (phrase): hết hơi
high note (noun): các âm cao

4. Do you think singing can bring happiness to people?

Absolutely yes. Even just humming or whistling can lift up one’s mood. If my memory serves me right, there’s
a so-called “feel good” chemical released in human brains when we sing, especially in groups. It also relieves
stress and anxiety. I can’t imagine a world where there’s no music, no melody, no notes, how monotonous and
terrifying.
