(12/11/2020) Society is based on rules and laws. It could not function if individuals were free
to do whatever they wanted to do. To what extent do you agree or not?

• Body 1: không có luật lệ (a society without the presence of laws) thì xã hội tất yếu sẽ
example for other members of the public), mà thậm chí còn khuyến khích việc đó
o Lợi ích 1: duy trì trật tự trong xã hội (maintain order in society)

KLISH EDUCATION | SPEAKING PART 1 SAMPLES 2021 | QUARTERS 1 & 2

It is often argued that a lawless society could not function properly if individuals had too much
freedom to do whatever they wanted to. I completely agree with this school of thought.

Admittedly, a society without the presence of laws and regulations is bound to face chaos.
For instance, the public would live in fear if a person could murder someone else because of
personal reasons but did not have to receive just punishments afterwards. Similarly, if
someone were not punished appropriately when they drunk drove and caused traffic accidents,
such an incident would not only leave extreme loss to the families of the victims, set a bad
example for other members of the public, but also encourage the same event to happen in the
future. These examples serve to show that a lawless society could cause social unrest and
put its citizens at risk.

For the above reason, I believe that laws and regulations must be set in motion to maintain
order in society. People still have their own freedom and can do whatever they wish to as long
as they abide by the laws. In addition to this, the laws would play a deterrent role against
wrongdoings. Only when law-breakers are punished for their crimes could social issues be
mitigated. Having said that, I believe that laws should not always be fixed or rigid, but need to
be flexible and take into consideration the nature and the circumstances, among others, of each
crime to ensure fair and just punishments.

In conclusion, I reaffirm that a society could not function smoothly like a well-oiled machine
were regulations, laws or rules not set in place.

1. Lawless society = society without the presence of laws: xã hội không có luật lệ
2. School of thought: lối suy nghĩ
3. Be bound to: gặp phải
4. Chaos: hỗn loạn
5. Receive just punishments: trừng phạt tương thích
6. Set a bad example for: là một tiền đề xấu cho
7. Serve to show that: để chứng minh rằng
8. Social unrest: bất ổn xã hội
9. Set in motion = set in place: được thực thi
10. Maintain order: duy trì ổn định
11. Abide by: tuân thủ
12. Play a deterrent role: có vai trò răn đe / ngăn cản
13. Rigid: cứng nhắc

Body 1: Body 2:
2012 & 2013 2014 & 2015
- In Jan of 2012, Thai rice (500 dollars), - The price of rice in VN remained quite
higher than 400 dollars of Vietnamese rice. constant at 330 dollars in 2014, and
These numbers dropped in the second experienced an overall increase in 2015
quarter and then recovered and fluctuated at - That of Thailand rose irregularly and peaked
their initial levels in the remainder of the year at 470 dollars in December 2014. The same
- In 2013, prices of rice in both countries pattern was repeated in 2015
decreased continuously to 400 dollars (Thai)
and 300 (VN) in December

The line graphs compare Thailand and Vietnam in terms of the monthly prices of their exported
rice between 2012 and 2015.

It can be seen that rice from Thailand was worth more than its Vietnamese counterpart during
the period given. It is also noticeable that the prices of rice exports in these two countries were
generally higher in 2012 and 2013 than in the last 2 years.

In January of 2012, rice from Thailand was exported at the price of 500 dollars per tonne, higher
than 400 dollars of Vietnamese rice. Despite their dramatic drops in the second quarter, these
numbers then recovered and fluctuated around their respective initial levels in the remainder of
the year. In 2013, there was a sharp decrease in the price of rice exports from both Thailand
and Vietnam, to 400 dollars and below 350 dollars per tonne in December respectively.

In 2014, the price of Vietnamese exported rice remained constant at around 330 dollars per
tonne, while an overall increase was recorded in 2015. Meanwhile, that of Thailand
experienced an irregular rise, reaching its peak of 470 dollars in December 2014, before
continuing this trend in 2015.

2. In the remainder of: trong phần còn lại
3. Experienced an irregular rise: tăng không liên tục

4. Do you like planting trees? Why?

1. What kind of trees do people usually plant in your country?

Well, there are just too many types of ornamental and fruit-bearing trees, some of which are
watermelon, persimmon and papaya, just to name a few. I really love the diversity of trees we
have in our country.
• Ornamental: trang trí
• Fruit-bearing: (cây) ra quả
• To name a few: liệt kê một số ít (còn rất nhiều nữa)

plant some small herbs and vegetables though, like coriander and mint as well as lettuce.
• Vacant: trống
• Herbs: thảo mộc

3. What kinds of trees do you plant?

Well, as I shared earlier, I don’t grow any trees at the moment. I do hope my future house will
have a small garden so that I can plant some fruit-bearing trees as well as flowers. I have
always wanted a garden like that.

4. Do you like planting trees? Why?

I have never tried planting trees before so I’m not really sure whether I’d like it but right now I

simultaneously rewarding when seeing a seed growing day by day.

Absolutely yes and I think it is actually one of the most crucial jobs in the world. First, farming or

great number of people would suffer from starvation. Second, it provides employment

4. Did you do farm work when you were young?

No. To be honest, I have never taken part in any farming activities. I live in the urban area and

Well, my family and I usually travel somewhere to celebrate New Year since it is the only time

2. Do you still remember a new year that you celebrated?

Well, the one that I can still recall vividly was the New Year of 2020 when my family and I had

Yes. Prior to New Year, we have to clean the house thoroughly to bid farewell to all the

the year that affords all Vietnamese citizens a chance to reflect on what’s happened during the
year. It’s become a tradition for families to gather around and watch the show. We also have a

• Afford: cung cấp (cơ hội)

4. What's your favorite color when decorating your home?

1. What's the decoration like in your home?

Well, I actually lead a minimalist lifestyle, so there aren’t many types of decorations in my

whenever I’m home.
• Minimalist lifestyle: phong cách tối giản
• Pleasing to the eye: hợp mắt

I don’t think I have any specific preference for any decoration right now, but I have a principal

is not just for show. I want to have something useful that can be utilized from time to time as
well.
• Multi-functional: nhiều công dụng
• For show: để trưng bày

3. Do Vietnamese people like redecorating their home?

Well, to be honest, I don’t know the first thing about this area since it’s not something I’m

alterations when necessary.
• Not know the first thing about: không biết gì về (cái gì)
• Minor alterations: thay đổi nhỏ

1. Do you often watch programs on the TV or on your cell phone?

Yes, I usually watch some entertainment TV programs with my family while we are eating dinner
and have a laugh together.

2. What kind of TV programs do you like?

Well, entertainment programs are my favorites. They really help me unwind after a day of hard

on the "fun” factor.

many friends really struggled with it back to the time when we were still students.
• Struggle with something: vật lộn với cái gì

3. What can people do with maths in their daily life?

Well, there are actually various real-life applications of math. Take baking for example. In order
to bake something, one’d need to measure all the ingredients involved in the recipe or

possibilities.
• Measure: đo lường

• Resume: tiếp tục

4. How do you feel after taking a nap?

Well, I feel refreshed and energized after having a nap. That’s why I have the habit of napping

There are many things I take pride in when it comes to my country. Off the top of my head,

outside because they were so delicious, haha.
• Recall: nhớ lại

To be honest, that thought has never crossed my mind. I am environmentally conscious and

• A delight: niềm vui
• A change of scenery: thay đổi phong cảnh

1. What kinds of advertisements do you watch?

watching, I turn them off immediately.
• (not) the case for: (không) đúng với
• Pop up: xuất hiện

2. Where can you see advertisements?

Pretty much everywhere, I suppose, be it TV, the Internet, radios or newspapers. I guess the

promote their brands and their products.
• Be it…or…: hoặc cái này… hoặc cái kia…

• Make impulsive purchases: mua sắm theo cảm tính

4. Do you watch advertisements from the beginning to the end?

It depends on what I am doing at that time as well as the length of the adverts, but generally

2. Are there any flowers that have special meanings in Vietnam?

To be honest, I don’t know the first thing about this kind of topic as flowers are not something

3. Have you planted any flowers?

• On the rise: đang tăng
• Catch up with: cập nhật thông tin / cuộc sống (với bạn bè)
• Accompanied by: đi kèm với

2. What kind of food do you like to eat for barbecue?

Off the top of my head, meat or seafood must be there. It doesn’t matter if they are seasoned
or not. I just couldn’t imagine a barbecue without protein. Next, I love to have some kinds of
veggies as well like eggplants and beans. Grilled eggplants are just out of this world.

• Seasoned: ướp (gia vị)
• Out of this world: rất ngon

Both, actually, but for different reasons. For my family, having a barbecue party is like having a

complaining or anything. It’s just about changing up the routine. For my friends, we can have a
great time doing some catching up over grilled meat.

4. Did you have barbecue when you were a child?

Oh yes, and quite often actually. I still have this fond memory of the good old days when our
big family gathered around the barbecue every Sunday night, shared what happened during the

while driving and appreciate the beauty of the surrounding at the same time.

2. When do you travel by car?

I don’t travel by car often when I travel domestically really. I’d rather go by plane or other
vehicles for long-distance travelling. But when I go to other countries, the car is usually the first
choice of transportation that pops up in my head if I’m about to go somewhere.
• Domestically: (du lịch) trong nước
• Pop up: xuất hiện

Yes, and I say this because I was once a student myself. We usually have to go through a long
exhausting 8-hour school day and even extra classes afterwards. In the end, we are really tired
after returning home, but still have a pile of homework waiting to be completed. This kind of
routine repeats itself for days and months. Therefore, I understand how tough it is and I do wish
modern students would have more time for relaxation.

1. Do you like to wear special costumes?

If by special costumes you mean fancy or formal attire, then I’m not really into them. Not that I
don’t find them beautiful or anything, but those kinds of clothes are only suitable for a limited
number of occasions. Plus, they are also more expensive compared to other forms of apparels,
so I only put them on whenever I must. In my daily life, I’d like to go with something more casual
and flexible.
• Attire: quần áo (thường là loại trang trọng)
• Apparel: quần áo

2. Did you try any special costumes when you were young?
Yes, I usually wore this suit when attending special events like proms in school. Those were the
only occasions I put on formal clothing like a suit really.

3. When was your last time wearing special costumes?

It was a while ago actually. I put on this suit and came to my university for the yearbook

and mature, and for that, I was really pleased.

I’ve only bought one off-the-peg suit before. I don’t wear it often though, because as I shared
