ASSIGNMENT IN PHILIPPINE POP CULTURE

Nick Joaquin’s A Heritage of Smallness is a painful though factual reality check regarding the
Philippines’ status as a country. Scientifically speaking, the Philippines is rich and full of
minerals and resources, enough to declare it as one of the first-world countries. But just like
any other nation, the Philippines has a system implemented and run by the Filipinos. In this
case, a system of wanting to stay where it is safe. ‘’Huwag yan, walang pera diyan.’’ or
‘’Siya na lang yung iboboto ko kasi siya lang ang kilala ko’’ even though they are the most
corrupt politician. Those are only a few of the many things that the majority of Filipinos
practice due to their fear of risk. For them, it is better to stay in the same small town that is
filled with trauma than go seek a better life somewhere else due to it being their
‘’nakasanayan na.’’ They are also afraid to vote for a politician with a clean record, they
would rather elect a corrupt individual with plenty of evidence to prove his wrongdoings. As
I read Joaquin and analyzed what he wrote, I understood better that Filipinos' playing-safe
mentality will always be the one thing holding us back from progressing towards a better and
more fruitful country. As long as the fear of ‘’what if everything goes wrong?’’ is planted in
the minds of the many, the hope of ‘’what if everything works out?’’ will never be
acknowledged and the Philippines will remain
To Sir Rosendo Martinez,

Good day, sir!

I would like to grab this opportunity to thank you because I am learning a lot in your
class due to your method of teaching. You are calm, and patient, and you do not get
mad immediately or embarrass your students. I hope you know that you are creating
a safe environment for everyone and for that, thank you. I was reminded that this is
how education should be.

Have a blessed semester, sir!

Respectfully yours,

Joyz Mizpah D. Elpedang
