According to my research from Marine Insight by Raunek (2021) The safety

management system (SMS) It ensures that each and every ship comply with the
mandatory safety rules and regulations, and follow the codes, guidelines, and
standards recommended by the IMO, classification societies, and concerned maritime
organizations.

Therefore, Implementation and monitoring of the safety practices and procedures

onboard as per SMS is crucial to ensure the safety of the crew, passengers, and the
environment. All crew members should be familiar with the SMS of the vessel. This
includes understanding the policies, procedures, and protocols outlined in the SMS
manual. Crew members receive appropriate training on safety procedures outlined in
the SMS. This includes familiarization with emergency equipment, firefighting
techniques, evacuation procedures, etc., and by following processes such as Safety
Drills, Documentation, Risk Assessment, Audits and Inspections, Incident Reporting and
Investigation, Continuous Improvement, Crew Feedback, and Management Review, It
ensure that vessels can effectively implement and monitor safety procedures onboard
as per the SMS, thereby enhancing safety and reducing the risk of accidents or
incidents.
