BASIC UNDERSTANDING ON MODULAR OPERATION THEATERS -ISSUES ON BIO SAFETY ?

By Dr.T.V.Rao MD

WHAT IS A MODULAR OPERATION THEATER - Modular OT is a finished steel structure with the joint
less sterile coating providing a high-quality finish? Prefabricated modular OT offers the advantage of
speedy construction, high-quality finishes in a prevention of contamination build up, long durability,
robust and flexibility design for future expansion, ease of maintenance etc. The per-engineered modular
Operation Theater solves or at least reduces the problem of infections.

Do not underestimate the power of simple measures the inanimate surfaces in the operation theatre
need proper periodic cleaning and disinfection. Grossly contaminated surfaces are the potential sources
of hospital acquired infections. Cleaning is most important in maintenance of operation theaters even
more than sensationalism and disinfection as it removes contaminants, dust, and organic matter. By
keeping the floor clean and dry, bacteria are reduced. Dry areas cause natural death of bacteria except
spores. Floor should be cleaned with vacuum cleaner or wet mops. Brooms are not recommended it
increases bacterial flora in environment. A simple detergent reduces flora by 80 %. Addition of
disinfectant reduces to 95 %. Roofs should not be disturbed unnecessarily The operation theater should
be thoroughly washed with water and detergent mixture so as to get rid of all spills and proteinaceous
materials before a disinfectant is used for mopping the surfaces. Many scientific studies prove simple
cleaning measures and human behavior can make a change in up keeping the human and patient safety,
as we already have the safety protocols in the operation theater remain with number of personal in the
operation and human behavior in the operation theater , with It has been observed that there is a
general relationship between the aerobic bacterial count and the risk of infection. There is a significant
risk of infection when there are more health care workers and permitting many medical students in the
theater the counts certainly reduce when the staff follow the principle of lesser talking and more
scientific behavior for human safety.

What is OT protocol? OT systems can be required to control valves, engines, conveyors and other
machines to regulate various process values, such as temperature, pressure, flow, and to monitor them
to prevent hazardous conditions. OT systems use various technologies for hardware design and
communications protocols, in modular operation theater control panels are available withing reach of
the operating surgeons

AIR CHANGES AND AIR FLOW ARE REGULATED - Modular OT system shall be supplied together with
Vertical Laminar Air Flow ceiling system only. The laminar box size shall be minimum 3000mm x 3000mm
for all the OTs with air volume delivery should not be less than 7000 m3/h at discharge velocity ranging
between 0.24m/s to 0.30m/s maximum.

At present in the Indian scenario, microbiological surveillance is done based on the individual
knowledge, availability of resources, funds, access to microbiologist/laboratory, amount of surgical load,
occurrence of SSI, and the maintenance of air quality inside the OT.

HOW TO MAINTAIN THE STANDARDS SAFETY AND SURVEILLANCE - The world is going in for new changes
with the introductions of Modular operation theaters however it is wise to follow the standard operative
procedures created by manufacturers for effective Bio safety

HOWEVER, THE FUNDAMENTALS OF WORKING REMAIN SAME AS PRINCIPLES WE ARE ALREADY DOING
ONLY NEED REFINEMENTS AT FEW PROTOCOLS
