My Vision for the Future: Professional Cybersecurity Engineer

In a rapidly evolving world where cyber threats are increasing day by day, the field of
cybersecurity has become my primary focus for my professional future. I feel inspired
and excited to pursue my goals as a professional in this important and vital field.

What is Cyber Security?

Is the protection of information that is stored, transmitted, and processed in a

networked system of computers, other digital devices, and network devices and
transmission lines, including the Internet. Protection encompasses confidentiality,
integrity, availability, authenticity, and accountability. Methods of protection include
organizational policies and procedures, as well as technical means such as encryption
and secure communications protocols.

What skills does a cyber security engineer require?

As with many other IT roles, there are various transferable skills that you can implement
across multiple positions. While some of these are technical skills, some are more
general and apply to many different workplaces. Some of the most important key skills
for this role include:

Attention to detail: Having a good eye for detail is particularly

important when specialising in network security. Good attention to detail
helps an engineer recognise weak points in the network and potential
external attacks. Since engineers constantly monitor and upgrade security
systems, understanding the necessary details within them makes any
changes much more efficient.

Logic skills: Cyber security engineers require ample logic skills, especially when
designing and implementing security systems. Thinking logically allows you to engage
properly with computers, especially when you work with automation or algorithms in
your system. If you're in doubt about your logical abilities, consider searching for logic-
building exercises online or using your professional experience to train your logical
skills.
Problem-solving skills: Creating innovative solutions to unprecedented
challenges is a major part of cyber security. To work in this sector, try to understand how
to think in new and interesting ways while remaining compliant, within budget and,
most importantly, working to a deadline. Problem-solving skills may include adapting to
new processes or software and remaining flexible in the face of cyber attacks or other
challenges.

Good communication: IT departments typically have multiple teams working

across different sectors. Security and networking professionals may work together,
feeding information across the wider organisation. Likewise, IT professionals in smaller
businesses typically troubleshoot issues with other employees that may not understand
the concepts being explained to them, a process that requires exceptional
communication skills.

Planning skills: Running a network security program requires forward planning

across a variety of factors. Cyber security engineers consider plans for multiple actions,
such as applying upgrades, monitoring attacks and stress testing. At the same time,
scheduling necessary maintenance requires a good understanding of proper planning to
minimise disruption.

Time management: Since cyber security engineers typically deal with both
planned and unplanned challenges, it's vital that they can manage their time properly
on relatively short notice. Because the engineers may perform implementation,
maintenance and testing in a condensed time slot, it's necessary to ensure that various
processes don't clash to create potential security breaches. This requires good time
management skills supported by project management software.

Flexibility: Cyber security engineers ideally remain flexible and adaptable to

respond to security breaches quickly. Being able to switch from one task to another in
an instant is a useful skill and can help an engineer deal with the issues efficiently using
the best practices. Flexibility also helps engineers plan the various steps of building a
security system, including design, build and implementation.

My Experience in Training Courses: I have already enrolled in the

CompTIA Security+ course and have begun my journey into exploring the world of
cybersecurity. During the course, I learned many fundamental concepts such as different
types of cyber threats and how to effectively deal with them. I have also started
acquiring the necessary skills to analyze vulnerabilities in systems and web applications,
and enhance cybersecurity overall.
