PRESENT CONTINUOUS
The present continuous, also known as the present progressive, is a verb tense that
describes an action that started in the past and is still ongoing in the present.
The present continuous requires the present form of the verb 'to be' and the '-ing' form of
the main verb or present participle.
Any sentence that uses "is" or "are" and a verb with the suffix "-ing" is a present
continuous.

How to form the present continuous?

To form the present continuous, the auxiliary verb 'to be' is used along with the present
participle verb ending in '-ing'. The present participle is a verb form used in progressive
tenses, such as in the case of the present continuous.

The present continuous has 5 main uses:

Clearly explaining actions that are happening at the same moment they are described. For
example:
• He is learning English.
Providing context when expressing current situations. These sentences are often
accompanied by adverbs like recently, currently, or lately, among others. For example:
• She has been crying a lot lately.
Expressing future events or actions with certainty. For example:
• We are going to the movies next Friday.
Describing momentary actions or events. For example:
• He is talking now, but he was unconscious yesterday.
Indicating recurring situations. In these sentences, it is necessary to add adverbs like
forever, always, constantly, among others, to reinforce their context. For example:
• He is always running at 6 am.

Examples of sentences with the present continuous:

Here are some examples of sentences with the present continuous:

'Ali is swimming in the pool.'

'She is doing a funny walk.'
'The car is going very fast.'
In these examples, the verb 'to be' is in the present tense and agrees with the subjects of
each sentence. The main verb is presented in the form of the present participle '-ing' since it
is a continuous action that continues in the present.
