Tutorial 5: Group Homomorphisms

Time : 1.0 hours

Attempt ALL questions.

A1. Verify the fact that each of the following are group homomorphisms:
(a) θ : G → G; θ(g) = g, ∀g ∈ G.

(b) θ : G → G; θ(g) = eG , ∀g ∈ G.

A2. Show that the composition of two group homomorphisms is itself a group homomor-
phism.

A3. Verify if each of the mappings given in the preceeding question are monomorphic,
epimorphic, isomorphic and automorphic.

A4. Identify the kernels of the two homomorphisms given above.

A5. Given that G is an Abelian group, show that f : G → G; f (x) = x−1 is an isomorphism.

A6. Show that the image of an element b of a group (G, O), which is such
that aOb = eG , a ∈ G, under the group homomorphism f , is another element
k ∈ (K, ∗), which is such that p ∗ k = eK , p ∈ K.
