Great author, great films.
JRR Tolkien wrote approximately forty books. The most popular are The Hobbit and The Lord
of the Rings. These are stories of life in the 'middle-kingdom'. Both books are popular with
children and adults of all ages. Tolkien's stories have magic and adventure and they are very
difficult to film. The first films of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings were cartoons. In 2001
the first of three films that follow the story of The Lord of the Rings appeared. The films cost
$270 million each. The makers of the films went to New Zealand because New Zealand has the
scenery they needed.
Tolkien was born in 1892 in South Africa. When he was four, his father died and his mother took
him and his brother back to England. He was a very good student at school. He was interested in
languages and learned Anglo-Saxon and Middle English. He then invented languages for fairies
and elves! In 1920 Tolkien became a university teacher. He had four children and he told them
the story of The Hobbit, which appeared as a book in 1937. It was so popular that his publishers
immediately wanted another book, but Tolkien took 12 years to write The Lord of the Rings.
Tolkien died in Oxford in 1973.
