Feedback on 6th edition of Campbell's BIOLOGY (Appendix)

(1)
Dear Dr. Abu-Samak,
After a colleague forwarded your recent question regarding Ch. 48 in the 7th edition of
Campbell/Reece BIOLOGY, I sent it to the co-author working on the animal physiology unit for the
8th edition of the text, Dr. Steven Wasserman at University of California, San Diego. His response is
below. I hope you find it useful and thank you again for your feedback on the text.
Beth Winickoff
Supervising Editor, Campbell/Reece BIOLOGY
Benjamin Cummings/Pearson Education

Dear Dr. Abu-Samak,

I am currently revising the animal physiology section of the text and I appreciate very much your
pointing out an inaccurate statement in the current edition.
Motor neurons, as typically defined, communicate with muscles, glands, and tissues, with the
glands being either endocrine or exocrine. For the purpose of the statement under consideration, it
would seem better to write:
"Output from the CNS travels through motor neurons to effector cells, typically in tissues of muscles
or glands." Would such a change in the text revision now underway meet with your approval?
12

We always welcome feedback on the text and look forward to hearing from you in the future
regarding any suggestions for improvement or any features you find particularly useful.
Sincerely,
Steven Wasserman
Supervising Editor, Campbell/Reece BIOLOGY

(2)
Dear Dr. Abu-Samak,
Thank you again for your suggestions on Ch 42.
Based on your feedback, we have changed the sentence about the location of
the heart to read "Located BEHIND the sternum..." which I think you will agree
is more accurate for a person in a standing or sitting position. I suspect the
original wording came from a medical context in which you think of a person
lying down on a bed or a table.
As for your second comment on the stroke volume, for the new edition of the
book we had already changed the stroke volume to "about 70 mL." We now
give the resting heart rate as "about 72 beats per minute".
70 mL x 72 beats/min = 5.04 L/min, which agrees with our statement that
cardiac outpit is "5 L/min"
60 sec/ min / 72 beats/min = 0.83 sec/beat, which agrees with our statement that
the cardiac cycle takes "about 0.8 second." So I think you will agree that the
math is now consistent.

I hope this is helpful,

Beth Winickoff

Dear Dr. Abu-Samak,
With regard to your question regarding Chapter 48, I would propose the following
revision:
"The autonomic nervous system contributes to homeostasis by controlling smooth
and cardiac muscles and regulating organs of the digestive, cardiovascular,
excretory, and endocrine systems."
By replacing "the organs" with "organs" and "control" with regulate, I think I have
addressed your well-placed concerns.
Thank you again for your feedback.

Sincerely,
Steven Wasserman
