1 Checking progress

Part A: Complete the following description of the tasks a manager has to do with vocabulary from
the Checking progress lesson.

I’m a manager in the IT department and there are several things I have to do when it comes to the
employees on my team. Firstly, I have to find new people to work for us if we need them. We pay quite
1
well, so when we advertise a new job, we often get a large number of a
from people who want to work with us. It’s my role to interview them and to check to see if they are
2
q to work with us. Often though, the most important thing is to find
someone who will work well with the other people on the team. It’s important to get a balance of skills
3
and a flexible personality. Secondly, every six months or so I like to do a r
4
with everyone on the team and look at their p . Sometimes, I can
arrange training for them if they need extra skills. I think it’s very important to help them with their
5
p development because everyone likes to feel as though they are learning,
even if they’ve been in the same position for a while. Finally, I also have to deal with any problems that
happen between employees. This doesn’t happen very often, but there was a time last year where I
6
had a c from a member of the sales team about one of the men who works
for me. She really wasn’t happy with the way he had spoken to her. In this situation, I try to focus on
7
the facts of the situation and I told him what I e from everyone in our
team, and that includes being polite with people in other departments. I asked him to apologize to the
8
woman and said that he would be able to stay on the c that there weren’t
any more problems. I then had a few meetings with him to check his progress. Everything worked out
well and the woman was happy. Those situations can be difficult, but as long as you are fair and listen,
you can learn from it.
