• Henry Walter is known as the father of the Indian Census.

• The Census was first started under British Viceroy Lord Mayo in 1872.
• The first synchronous census was taken under British rule on February
17, 1881, by W.C. Plowden, Census Commissioner of India.
• During that time Lord Ripon was Viceroy of India.
• The first census of Independent India was conducted in 1951, which
was the seventh census in its continuous series.
• Census 2011 was the 15th National Census of the country since 1872
and the 7th after Independence.

• The slogan of census 2011 was ‘Our Census, Our future’.

• C M Chandramauli was the Registrar General and Census
Commissioner of India for the 2011 Indian Census.
• The Census 2021 will be conducted in 18 languages out of the 22
scheduled languages (under the 8th schedule) and English. The
Census of 2011 was conducted in 16 languages.
• Census of India 2011 was conducted in two stages:
1. House listing & Housing Census : (April to September 2010)
2. Population Enumeration (9th to 28 February 2011)
