Forests cover about 30% of the land on Earth. They home thousands animal species, and
they help people in various ways. However, our planet's forests are under serious threat,
as large numbers of trees are being destroyed every year. The destruction trees is known
as deforestation.
There are many reasons for deforestation. In many parts the world, trees are cut down
and the land is used for farming. People also destroy forest areas to build towns and cities,
as well as roads. A lot of trees are cut down illegally and are used to make wood paper
products. Wildfires that can happen naturally are another cause of deforestation, but
wildfires are sometimes caused by humans too.
Deforestation affects life on Earth in different ways. Over 250 million people live in
forests, many of them have to find a different place to live. A lot of animals and plants are
endangered and some of them have almost become extinct as they are losing their
homes. What's more, every person on the planet is affected by deforestation. Forests give
us clean air, as they take in carbon dioxide (CO2) and produce oxygen. When trees are cut
down or burned, carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere; this can cause the
temperature of our planet to rise, a problem which is known as global warming. Global
warming causes climate change, and this a threat to life on Earth.
Deforestation is not new and trees have been cut down for years and years. About 2,000
years ago, 80% of Western Europe was covered with trees, but now only 34% is. In the
eastern part of North America, about half of the forests were cut down for wood and
farming from the 1600s to the 1870s. Nowadays, the situation is more serious than ever.
One study showed that 502,000 square miles of forest- an area larger than South Africa-
were lost between 1990 and 2016. Moreover, around 17% of the "Earth's Lungs", the
Amazon rainforest, has disappeared in the last fifty years.
Is there any hope for the future of planet? There is, but only if efforts are made to protect
forests and measures against deforestation are taken. Not all hope is lost, but the time to
act is now.
