Reflection of the course of Educational Process NUP 1206

First, I am going to describe the subject of the educational process in nursing. It is a 2 nd
semester subject of Master of science in Nursing programme. It should be spread through the
second six months of the first year. The lectures started on 28 th May 2023 and ended on 03rd
September 2023. On the first day, Dr. Damayanthi Dassanayake delivered the Introduction of the
course lecture. According to the introduction, there are 13 topics to be studied. There are five
evaluations will be done as Home Assignment - two learning theories (Continuous Assessment –
1 / CA 1), Reflective writing (Continuous Assessment – 2 / CA 2), Teaching practicum
Assignment (Continuous Assessment – 3 / CA 3), Teaching practicum Presentation (Continuous
Assessment – 4 / CA 4 ), and Scholarly Paper (Final Assessment). At that time, displayed marks
allocation as 50% for Home assignment, 25 % for Reflective journal, 25 % for Teaching
Practicum and 100 % for Scholarly paper.

After that introduction lecture, lectures were started on 11 th June 2023 by Dr. Pramuditha
Madhavi by Historical development of Nursing Education. After that 17 sessions were held over
35 days through 13 topics. The significant topics are Evolution of the teaching role in nursing,
Ethical, Legal and Economic aspects of education in health care, Application of learning theories
in patient education, Planning, designing and implementing educational programmes,
Behavioural objectives, Taxonomy of objectives, Instructional methods, Instructional materials,
Assessment and evaluation, Problem based learning and evidence-based learning.

Throughout this lecture series, I mostly enjoyed with learning theories and Teaching
practicum. Dr. Madhavi explained the learning theories and Teaching – learning plan very well
with live examples. All lectures and exams went online method, but she explained lively, and her
voice is very powerful and has no monotonous. She always kept attention on us and no chance to
go mind away. She asked questions or comments. I couldn’t attend some lectures with my busy
work schedule and personal matters. But I heard recordings through my travelling time. Ms.
Samanthi uploaded recordings of lectures regularly. When I had to face some difficulties, Dr.
Madhavi gave me an opportunity to discuss and get clarification even through telephone
discussion.
6

We faced difficulties with accelerating the program according to KIU instructions. They
congested all lectures, assignments, and exams within four months. Then we had to face many
difficulties. with limited time as we are working students. The academic panel entered this
situation and took action to extend the due dates of assignments and changed exam dates
according to our request.

I had to struggle with making General Objective in Teaching Practicum and my lecturer advised
me regarding that.

One online exam was held for CA 4 – Teaching practicum presentation. We students all
are four in number. We presented our work in front of two examiners, one was our lecturer, and
the other examiner was a guest. Ms. Samanthi Senarath, who was the coordinator of the
programme facilitated the exam. The marks allocation was seen in Teams app according to
assignment base as CA 1 – 40 %, CA 2 – 10%, CA 3- 15%, CA 4 – 15%, FE – 100 %. There are
some gaps between the Introduction and actions.

Feelings of this incidence series can be described as the mixture of bitter and sweet.
There was a lot of work and a lot of controversy with lot of good new knowledge. This course is
very interesting for me as a nurse educator. Earlier I thought to select Leadership and
Management course as I already have a Diploma in Teaching and supervision. But now I am
happy about my selection because I was fortunate to enhance existing my knowledge and I was
referred to more self reading and lead to critical thinking. I feel that through my experience of
this course, I have achieved knowledge and self-confidence to step out into the real teaching
world.

Evaluation of reflection is all lectures and exams were done with online technology. It
was more beneficial for some times, but sometimes I had to face poor internet connections
problems. Another thing is if even several lectures were done physically, I could gain more
facility of more understanding than online lectures. If university could publish Due dates of
exams and assignments at the introduction lecture, the controversy may not happen because then
we can solve the problem at the beginning. As assignments are very weigh, need more time to do
effectively.
7

When Analysing the incidences happen during this course, there are more positive things
than negative things. Considering my side, I had to be able to do proper time management to
face any difficult situation such as assignments congestion. Though I am not preferring online
lectures, I should cope with the new situation.

When analyzing the marks allocated to assignments at the beginning and last there is a
difference. It may be very beneficial if having stable marks allocation. If not, students’
confidence may cease. Considering the university side, they should have more facilitating points
than now to improve students’ confidence. Another thing is it may be very useful if uploaded
lecture notes frequently.

Conclusion of this Reflection is this course is very effective and meaningful course for
the MSc Nursing programme. It was organized in an acceptable way. The lecturer is very fluent
in English Language and as well as in teaching. The minor weaknesses should be overcome in
future. The educational process in nursing is a very important subject for nurse educators aswell
as for nurses.

My suggested actions for this reflection are (1) every other lecture should be done
physically. Then post graduate students can resolve their problems with discussions. (2) all
exams, especially presentations should be done physically, otherwise evaluation cannot done
effectively. (3) at the beginning of the course, well planned introduction (with the assignments /
exams deadlines) should be done. (4) lecture notes should be sent properly (5) students should do
time management properly with the profession and family background. (6) all students should be
familiar with new technologies
8

Conclusion

Reflection of the course of Educational Process in nursing is written too as a requirement

of Continuous assessment 2. It is written according to knowledge of this course. Despite that, I
gained more comprehension of the course and improvable points of mine. I am aware of my
strengths and weaknesses as well as problems of course side.
