1. Is there any other reason why objects should not be

placed directly on the balance aside from a possible
reaction with the balance pan?

Review Questions

5. Why is it sometimes advisable to use water bath for

evaporation instead of direct heating?
Rationale
The learning of common laboratory techniques is important for
every student at the beginning of chemistry, as this would help
the student read the instructions of an experiment and to
reduce any incidents of accidents and injury.
Rationale
Common Laboratory Techniques can be used when one would
constantly find themselves in a laboratory setting. Learning
these can help a medical student reduce the margin of error
that comes with any medical experiments.
OBJECTIVES
Instruct students on crucial laboratory procedures,
including weighing, pouring/transferring liquids,
dispensing chemicals, heating chemicals, precipitation,
decantation and filtration, and evaporation.

Reinforce the understanding of specific principles behind

laboratory operations, such as decantation and filtration.

Familiarize students with essential laboratory

apparatus and materials
Data Interpretation
Data #1:

mass of paper box (tare) 2.8g

mass of paper box and NaCO3 4.3g

mass of NaCO3 1.5g

mass of paper box (tare) 2.8g

mass of paper box and NaCO3 3.4g

(spatula)

mass of NaCO3 0.6g

Data Interpretation
Data #2 Description of new substance formed: Magnesium carbonate
appears to be white and cloudy.

Data #3 Description of filtrate: The filtrate (Sodium Sulfate) appears to

be clear and transparent.
Data Interpretation
Data #4 Comparison of results of decantation and filtration:

Method Decantation Filtration

Description the magnesium carbonate (a solid) and the separated liquid of

of the liquid were separated. After the the magnesium
separated decantation process, the separated liquid carbonate appeared to
liquid appeared clear. However, after some be clear but a bit cloudy
time, the white substance of the compared to the
magnesium carbonate settled at the
decantation process.
bottom.

Principle heavier (denser) substances sink while small particles of

behind lighter (less dense) substances float magnesium carbonate
operation that passed through the
filter paper, making the
filtrate appear cloudy.
Data Interpretation
Data #5: 3 precautions from all preceding procedures and reasons why these
should be followed:

Precaution Reason

Use a stirring rod when pouring ensures safety but also prevents the loss
between beakers of valuable chemicals and maintains the
accuracy of measurements

Never weigh chemicals directly onto avoid cross-contamination and

the balance weighing scale prevent damage to the balance pan

Use a spatula to transfer solid direct contact with chemicals can be

chemicals hazardous

Data #6 Description of product after evaporation: Magnesium carbonate,

appears almost similar to the precipitate form

never be weighed
while still hot?
ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS

2. Cite the reasons for the

use of glass-stoppered
bottles for acids and
plastic-stoppered bottles
for bases.
ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS

3. Why should excess

chemicals never be
returned to reagent
bottles?
ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS

4. Explain the drop-wise

addition of more silver

in Procedure V-2?
ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS

5. Which is a more
effective method of
separation–decantation
or filtration?
CONCLUSION
Practicing common laboratory techniques
ensures safety and precision, as well as
reproducibility and reliability. The different
procedures would train the experimenter to
use these practices for the subsequent
activities. The activity consisted of learning
about various procedures and methods that
should be performed when handling
chemicals.
