PSY02L: PSYCHOLOGICAL STATISTICS (LAB)

PAR, Nerlyn G. September 27, 2023

SALVATUS, Lady Nicole V. AB PSYCHOLOGY 2-A

The population of 22 was asked about their birth month and year, place of residence, number of
siblings, pair of shoes, and number of pets. The average, median, mode, and standard deviation of their
answer were computed. It is done by using excel.
For the birth month, most of the respondents have April as their birth month with the frequency
of 4. The mean is 1.833, the median and the mode is 1, the standard deviation for sample is 1.115, and
the standard deviation for population is 1.067. The data implies that there are many months that the
frequency is 1. For the birth year, 2003 and 2004 got equal frequency of 10 and both 2002 and 2005
have 1. The average and the mean is 5.5, the mode is 1, the standard deviation for sample 5.198, and
the standard deviation for population is 4.5. Its distribution of frequency is balanced since the frequency
at the lowest and the highest are both 2. For the place of residence, the average is 1.692, the median
and the mode is 1, since there are many municipalities that the frequency of the answer is 1, the
standard deviation for sample is 109, and the standard deviation for population 1.066.
When it comes to the number of siblings, 7 is the highest number while 0 or none is the lowest.
Only one have 7 siblings, while three have 5, three have 4, six have 3, two have 2, four have 1, and three
of them have no sibling which means they are an only child. This set of data got the average of 2.727
and the median and mode of 3 because six of the respondents have 3 siblings, meaning it is the number
with the most frequency. Also, the standard deviation is 1.839 from the population.

In the number of shoes, 11 are the highest number while 2 is the lowest. One has 11 shoes, the
other one have 10, and one also have 9. While four have 7 pair shoes, four have 6, seven have 5, three
have 4, and one has 2. The data under the number of shoes got the average of 5.955; the median of 5.5,
and; the mode of 5. Again, 5 is the most occurring number which means most of the respondents have 5
pair of shoes. The standard deviation from this data is 2.011.

Lastly, the number of pets has 8 as the highest number while 0 or none as the lowest. Two
claimed that they have 8 pets, one has 6, two has 5, two has 3, three has 2, four has 1, and eight has no
pet at all. Within these responses, 10 of the pets are dogs, 3 are cats, and 1 is a hamster. This implies
that majority of the respondents have dogs as their pet. This data got the average of 2.182, median of 1,
and mode of 0 since eight out of twenty-two respondents have the same response which is 0 or no pet
at all. The standard deviation is 2.552

Navigating Excel is perplexing and it just proved my then expectation that it wasn’t easy. I have
to familiarize myself again with the Excel shortcuts and formulas in order to find the correct answer
because if not, an error will occur and the entire data set will be messed up. I first learned about
Microsoft Excel when I was in 6th grade when I enrolled in a summer class about the basics of editing,
programming, and such. Although I was introduced to that kind of skills, and I am catching up with the
lessons — and I believe I learned — I had forgotten most of what I had learned from that summer class
because I was not practicing it and it was not that relevant to me back then. Moreover, we tackled excel
when I was in 8th and 10th grade in TLE, however, we never practiced it. Just a few discussions and
we’re done. From those experiences, I have learned that even though I learned terminologies and such,
the information about Excel will never stick in my mind unless I practice it. Hence, I was delighted that
we were given a chance to explore and navigate Microsoft Excel because that helped me/us to learn at
our own pace.

While inputting data sets and finding the measures of central tendency and standard deviation, I
was amazed by what Excel can do. Just a few taps, or entering the formula, we get the correct and
accurate answer. Also, excel can help us analyze a data set and convert it into graphs and charts for
better visualization of the data. Even though Excel is a bit confusing for me, I know that it will become
easier when I master it and fully grasp its usage and functions. I have to learn it because it will be a
useful tool for me someday when I start to do my thesis.

Years ago, when I was in Junior High School, I was a little curious on how to use excel because
many people around me know how to use it. In addition, I know that excel is useful for me as a student
especially in the subjects related to mathematics or statistics. Thus, I asked my sister to teach me, and
she taught me the basics. However, it seems confusing for me and I easily forgot the little knowledge
that I have learned then.
When I entered 2nd year college, I heard that the class, including me, will be using excel in the
subject Psychological Statistics laboratory. At that time, I doubted myself and thought that it would be
confusing for me just like my first try. But when I tried it again with my partner on the activity, it became
easier. I also enjoyed it and it became fun because we used shortcuts. Until now, I still remember the
steps clearly. And I realized that excel is not that hard to learn. It is actually a user friendly application,
maybe I just lacked the eagerness to learn before.
