A composition in Natai raga by the legendary eighteenth century composer, Muttuswami Dikshitar,
this is a prayer in Sanskrit to Ganesa, Lord of Obstacles, seeking an auspicious beginning to any
sincere and good task; any artistic performance is an offering to Him.

We meditate on Lord Ganesha - one who is clad in white, representing purity, who is all
pervading , whose complexion is gray like that of ash, who has four arms, who has bright
countenance, and who can destroy all obstacles in all the endeavours that we undertake.

I worship day and night that elephant faced Lord Ganesha who is like sun to the lotus face of
Mother Parvati. Giver of many boons, the single tusked Ganesh, I salute you to give a boon.
O Lord Ganesha !
You, of the large body and curved trunk, with the luster of a million suns, please remove all
obstacles from my path.
Gayatri refers to a special three-line Vedic meter used in mantras for invoking
and focusing consciousness on the Deity. The three gayatris below are
intoned during pujas and yajnas. They may also be recited as powerful japa
-- repeated again and again, while gently regulating the breath according to
systematic rhythms given by one's guru to establish a deep inner connection
with Lord Ganesha.
Ganapati Upanishad
Narayana Upanishad
Ganesha mantras are siddhi mantras . Each mantra contains certain specific
powers of Lord Ganesha. When chanted with the proper pranayama
(rhythmic breathing) and sincere devotion, they will yield good results. In
general, Ganesha mantras will ward off all evil and bless the devotee with
abundance, prudence and success. Evil spirits dare not enter the home or the
mind of the devotee where Ganesha mantras are recited. Those so mystically
inclined and knowledgeable of the seven chakras below the muladhara use
these powerful incantantions under the direction of the guru to close off these
regions of the mind one by one and free consciousness from deep depression,
confusion, jealousy, rage, lingering anger and fear. Some such mantras are
given below for the spiritual benefit of the readers.
One more point to remember is that one should bathe or wash the limbs
before sitting for repetition of the mantra. Also, one should do three or more
pranayama before beginning the mantra. The minimum repetition of the
mantra should be one full mala, or 108 times. When this is done at a fixed
hour and place regularly for 48 days, it becomes an upasana, which means
intense meditation, that will yield siddhis, or spiritual powers. Another
warning to bear in mind is that one should use those powers only for healing
the sick and other such selfless actions for the benefit of mankind. These
powers should not be misused. Misuse of power may bring the curse of the
asuras.
This is a mantra from Ganapati Upanishad. One may always use it before
beginning a journey, a new course in school, new career or job, or before
|| Aakaashaath patitam toyam yathaa gachchhati saagaram

O Lord Keshava !
Like all the rivers flow into and merge with the one and the same ocean, devotion shown by
the people to any name or form of God does reach the same Divinity, you.
O Saraswati!
Salutations to you, grantor of bleesings and embodiment of all wishes, I am getting inducted
to studies, may there be fulfillment for me forever.
The Guru, the teacher, is like Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshvara. Guru is the visible
incarnation of supreme divinity, therefore I bend my knees to that Guru.
Lord Hanuman!
The son of Anjana, the brave hero, the destroyer of the grief of Janaki, the chief of monkeys,
the slayer of Aksha kumara, the terror of Lanka, I salute to you.

his senses, who is excellent in geniuses, who is the son of the wind and the leader of all the
vanaras and represents Lord Shri Rama.

I salute to Lord Krishna, who is the Son of Vasudeva, Who killed Kamsa and Chanoora, Who
is the source of Bliss to His mother Devaki and who is the Teacher of the Universe.
He who wears Tilaka made of Kasturi in his broad forehead, Wearer of Koustubha, the rarest
of gems, in his majestic chest. He who wears the rarest of pearls in the bridge of his nose,
carries a flute in his hand, and beautiful bangles of gold. He who wears soulful sandal all over
his body, and the rarest of all gems in this world around his neck, and plays with the Gopika
damsels. Victory to you, Oh, Lord Krishna !
Goddess Lakshmi, who is the daughter of the king of the ocean of milk, whose abode is
Srirangam, who is served by all the divine ladies in heaven, who is the guiding light of the
world, who has obtained the everlasting glance from Brahma, Indra and Shiva, who lives in
the three worlds (Bhu, Bhuva, Suvaha), one who is dear to Mukunda (Krishna) - I offer my
salutations to you.
|| Mrutyunjayaaya Rudraaya

I pray to Lord Shiva who has conquered death, who is the destroyer of the universe, the one
with blue neck and who gives happiness to all.
The meaning of this shloka is that chanting the name of Sri Rama even once is equivalent to
saying the Vishnu Sahasranama a thousand times (As stated by Lord Siva to Parvati).
Therefore, the advice is to chant at least this one line if one cannot find time to chant the
whole of the Vishnu Sahasranama.
I salute to Lord Raaghava (Sri Rama), Dasharatha's son, Sithadevi's husband, and the shining
light of RaghuVamsa. Oh Lord, the broad shouldered, and lotus eyed Rama, Please alleviate
my fears, and drive away all the evils.
Whatever actions I may perform, Impelled by the forces of nature, intellect, soul, by body,
word, mind, and senses, I offer to the feet of Narayana
Oh Lord, From the unreal, lead me to the Real; From darkness lead me to Light; From death,
lead me to immortality.
|| Om sahanaa vavatu sahanau bhunaktu sahaveeryam karavaavahai
tejaswinaa vadheetamastu maa vid vishaa vahai
om shaanthih, shaanthih, shaanthihi ||
Oh God!
You are my mother, You are my father, You are my relative, You are my friend, You are my
knowledge, You are my wealth, You are everything to me.
The Lord is perfect, Perfect also is the Universe. If any portion is subtracted from the Perfect,
that which is taken and that which remains is yet Perfect.
The front part of the hands (the finger tips) are ascribed to Goddess Lakshmi, the Goddess of
wealth. The middle part (the palm) is ascribed to Goddess Saraswati - the Goddess of
learning. The root (the part of of hand near the wrist) is ascribed to Govinda. Therefore, every
morning, one should have a respectful look at one's hand which symbolizes honest labor.
O! Mother Earth, who has the ocean as clothes and mountains and forests on her body, who is
the wife of Lord Vishnu, I bow to you. Please forgive me for touching you with my feet.
In this water, I invoke the presence of holy waters from the rivers Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari,
Saraswati, Narmada, Sindhu and Kaveri. This sloka can be recited while taking a bath.
He who thinks that the act of offering as Brahman, the sacrificer as Brahman, the fire into
which the sacrifice is made as Brahman and is thus fully engrossed in Consciousness obtains
Brahman Itself This sloka is recited as a daily prayer prior to eating as an offering to God
(Naivedyam) that sanctifies the food.

Durga Sukta
.. Durga Sukta ..
The Indian system of beliefs refers to the female aspect of divinity as Shakti -
or the manifestation of energy. Parvati - the consort of Shiva or Lakshmi the
consort of Vishnu are enshrined in temples and all over India. Some of these
shrines are referred to as Shakti Peethams, (or the sites where the parts of
Sati's body fell as in the legend of Daksha's yagna). Others are ancient shrines
closely tied to local legends and beliefs.
In the Tamil speaking region, Ambaal - Amman temples and shrines in Saivite
temples as well as Maariamman temples are highly prevalent, as are the
Bhagawati temples in Kerala. Kaali and Durga are popular deities in the state of
Bengal. Kaali is also revered as an exponent of dance, defeated in the art only
by Shiva at Tiruvaalangaadu (and in another legend at Chidambaram).
The Kamakhya Devi temple in Assam as well as the Ambaji temple in Gujarat
have been popular centers of Shakti worship. The Vaishnao Devi temple in the
northernmost state of Jammu and Kashmir as well as the Kanyakumari temple
in the southernmost tip of the Indian subcontinent have both been centers of
Shakti worship for centuries.
The Kalighat Kali temple in Calcutta in Bengal, is one of the most visited
temples in Eastern India, and is regarded as one of the Shakti Peethams of the
Indian subcontinent.
Mangala Gowri temple at Gaya This Upa Shakti Peetha temple enshrining Devi
at Gaya is a center of tantric worship. Mookambika - Kollur: Rich in legend and
tradition, this temple at Kollur is closely associated with Adi Sankaracharya.
Harashat mata Temple at Abhaneri: In the village of Abhaneri near Udaipur are
several archeological remains from the yesteryears.
Manthra Pushpam
It is customary to recite Manthra Pushpam, or a short version of it, at the conclusion of all major
prayer rituals in the Temples and at home pooja functions. Often we offer flowers to the Deities at
this time making some people to think that this is something to do with the flowers [pushpam].
The verses of Manthra pushpam is given in Yajurveda. It is actually a recitation about the origin
and evolution of the natural forces like water, air, fire, earth, Sun and the stars and not just
praising God.
