A Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan in

Initial Oral Reading Assessment

February 16, 2024

I. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the learners are expected to:

a. identify one’s own reading level; and

b. realize the importance of reading skills.

II. Subject Matter:

a. Topic: Initial Oral Reading Assessment
b. Reference/s: Language Enhancement Through Reading Assessment (LETRA), Department of
Education
c. Material/s: Printed LETRA assessment tool

III. Procedure:
A. Routinary Activity

 Greetings

B. Motivation:

Before the actual assessment, the teacher will make sure that the learner is comfortable both physically
and emotionally. Next, the teacher will establish a rapport with the learner by greeting him/her and
doing warm-up activities in 1 minute. The teacher will proceed with the priming activities by explaining
to the learner that the teacher is doing the assessment activity to help the learner become a better reader.
After the warm-up activities, the teacher can start the assessment and must make sure that the word list
and forms to be used are prepared ahead of time.

C. Presentation of the Lesson:

The usual setup is, the teacher will ask the learners to read words from the assessment tool under word
level. But if the teacher assesses learners from high sections, it is justifiable for the teacher to ask the
learners to start reading from the sentence level or even from the paragraph level.
In the different reading levels, the teacher will record the data that the learners will produce while they
are reading like the number of correct words, errors, and skips. Should any student fail to pass a certain
reading level, the learner will be classified as a reader below that reading level. For an instance, a learner
who fails to pass the word level will be declared to have a below word reading level.
The data like oral reading rate or words per minute and reading accuracy rate will be computed once the
learner reaches the paragraph level. This level will require the teacher to set up a one-minute timer to
obtain objective and accurate results. If the learner had successfully passed a certain level, the teacher
will proceed to the next reading level to continue assessing the learner.
