I. Distinguish between:

Wind energy Geothermal energy

In this, kinetic energy of wind is converted into The hot water that gushes out through natural
electrical energy through turbines. geysers or geothermal springs is used to produce
thermal energy.
Windmills have been used for grinding grain, lifting Geothermal energy has been used for cooking,
water and producing electricity. heating, bathing for several years.
Areas- Lamba in Gujarat, Tamil Nadu , Areas- Manikaran in Himachal Pradesh, Puga
Netherlands, etc. valley in Ladakh, USA, etc.

III. Give reasons.

2. It is important to resort to non-conventional power resources.

It is important to resort to non-conventional resources because-
• Non-conventional power resources like sun, water, tides and wind are non-polluting and
inexhaustible.
• Non-conventional power resources like bio gas are low cost and easy to operate.
• Non- conventional power resource like geothermal energy and wind energy are clean and eco-
friendly.

IV. Answer the following questions.

5. How are power resources classified? Give an example for each. Compare the relative advantages and
disadvantages of both types of energy.

• Power resources can be broadly classified as-Conventional and Non-conventional resources.

• Conventional sources of energy- Conventional sources of energy can be described as non-renewable

or exhaustible resources, i.e., their reserves are limited.

• Example: Coal, petroleum, natural gas.

• Non-conventional resources of energy- Non- conventional sources of energy are those that are
continuously renewed by natural processes.

• Example- Solar energy, wind energy, Tidal energy etc.

The relative advantages and disadvantages of both types of energy.

Advantage-
• The advantage of Conventional sources of energy is – Emits large amount of energy.
• The advantage of Non-Conventional sources of energy are – Inexhaustible, Non-polluting, clean and
low cost of production

Disadvantage-
• The disadvantage of Conventional sources of energy are-
1) Exhaustible
2) Emits large amount of carbon.
• The disadvantage of Non-Conventional sources of energy are-
1) Expensive
2) Difficult to harness.
