DUNE SUMMARIES BY CHAPTER

Chapter 1: We are introduced to Paul, the protagonist. He is 15 at the time. His mother’s
name is Jessica. There is a precious spice, melange. This spice rewards the user with strong
vitality. He is greeted by a strange woman, Kwisats Heradech. She tests Paul to see whether or
not he is human. Placing his hand inside of a glowing cube, inducing strong pain to the nerves
of his hand, with a gaam jabor, behind his neck. Gaam jabor is a deadly poison on the end of a
needle. If Paul could not withstand the pain, she would inject him with it. She is convinced he
may be the chosen one. No man has taken the truthtrance drug. It enables the user to see past
memory, bodies memory, feminine avenues. She needs a man to be able to see the masculine
avenues. No man has ever succeeded in taking this drug. Everyone has resulted in death.

Chapter 2: Knowing both sides to something is critical before engaging in anything.

This was a short chapter involving a group of young men and men, looking to take over Arrakis,
mostly for wealth. CHOAM is the key to wealth. The Baron wishes to have the Duke, and his line
of blood eliminated. He wants complete control.

Chapter 3: Paul is able to recite every important dream. His dreams also tell the future. Also,
arguments between the strange lady, Jessica and Paul.. Mostly about whether or not he can
actually make it and become Kwisatz Hiderach. He senses nothing but doubt by the strange
lady.
Vocabulary: Conflagration: An extensive fire which destroys a great deal to a land or property.

Chapter 4: Paul meets Haleck, The Duke’s guard. He is told to train and prepare Paul for his
manhood. Paul and Haleck get into arms training. At first, Paul does not realize how serious it
means to be alert at all times for defense. Soon enough, he realizes, and is ready to venture off
to Arrakis with Haleck.
Vocabulary: Quiescent: In a state or period of inactivity or dormancy.
Chagrined: Feel distressed or humiliated.

Chapter 5: Dr. Yueh is with Paul before Paul’s father arrives. They talk about the population
of Arrakis. Yueh gives Paul a book, (Very old Catholic Bible). Yueh is on a secret mission to
betray Paul, sent from the Harkonnen beasts.

Chapter 6: The Duke and Paul talk about journeying to Arrakis. The Duke warns Paul about
the Harkonnens. The Duke sent over Duncan, the moral, to negotiate with the Fremen in
Arrakis, hoping to be judged by him. The Duke brings awareness to Paul, telling him he is a
Mentat. They have focused awareness, mnemonics, muscle control, and sharpened
sensitivities, know multiple languages, and nuances of voices. Paul will be the Duke someday. A
Mentat Duke. Paul agrees to move forward with the training. Paul has second doubts about this
purpose…
