CHAPTER II

In recent years, the popularity of video games, particularly those in the first-person shooter

genre such as Call of Duty, has surged among adolescents. With this trend in mind, this study

seeks to explore the potential effects of playing Call of Duty on the academic performance

and behavior of Grade 11 students at Ignacio Tan Memorial Integrated School. By examining

the gaming habits and experiences of these students, this research aims to shed light on the

relationship between video game engagement and various aspects of student life, offering

insights that can inform educational and parental strategies in navigating the digital

landscape.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

The prevalence of video games, particularly first-person shooter (FPS) games, among

teenagers has stirred discussions about their implications on behavior, cognition, and social

dynamics. Scholars have delved into this topic, examining the multifaceted effects of gaming

on adolescent development.Przybylski, Weinstein, and Murayama (2017) explored the

phenomenon of Internet gaming disorder and its clinical relevance. Their study shed light on

the potential negative consequences of excessive gaming, including increased aggression and

social withdrawal, highlighting the need for further investigation into the impact of video

games on adolescents' well-being.

In a meta-analytic review, Anderson et al. (2010) investigated the effects of violent

video games on aggression, empathy, and prosocial behavior across different cultures. Their

11
findings revealed a significant association between exposure to violent content, such as FPS

games, and adverse behavioral outcomes among teenagers, underscoring the importance of

understanding and addressing the implications of gaming on adolescents' social interactions.

These studies collectively contribute to the ongoing discourse surrounding the impact of

video games, particularly FPS games, on teenagers. While gaming can offer cognitive

benefits such as improved problem-solving skills and hand-eye coordination, it also poses

risks, including increased aggression and decreased empathy. Parental guidance and fostering

a balanced lifestyle are crucial for mitigating these potential negative effects while

maximizing the benefits of gaming for adolescent development.

REVIEW OF RELATED STUDIES

According to Granic, Lobel, and Engels (2014) delve into the positive repercussions of

engaging in video games, underscoring their potential benefits across cognitive, emotional,

and social domains. Their research serves as a cornerstone in comprehending the multifaceted

impacts of gaming on individual well-being.

Conversely, Greitemeyer and Mügge (2014) undertake a meta-analytic review aimed at

exploring how both violent and prosocial video game play influence social outcomes. Their

findings add depth to the understanding of the intricate interplay between gaming habits and

social behaviors, shedding light on the nuanced effects that different types of video games

can have on individuals' interactions and relationships. Together, these studies offer valuable

12
insights into the diverse ways in which gaming can shape cognitive development, emotional

resilience, and social dynamics, providing a nuanced perspective essential for guiding further

research and informing interventions aimed at maximizing the positive aspects of gaming

while mitigating potential risks.

This study reveals a nuanced understanding of gaming habits among grade 11 students

and their potential impacts. Granic et al.'s research highlights the positive aspects of gaming,

suggesting that video games can offer cognitive, emotional, and social benefits. However,

Greitemeyer and Mügge's meta-analytic review underscores the importance of considering

the specific content and context of gaming, particularly concerning social outcomes.
